Barton College names Ryan Mallam Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach

WILSON, N.C. – Barton College has named Ryan Mallam its new Head Men's and Women's Swimming Coach, Vice President of Athletics Ken Tyler announced.

Mallam replaces Kevin Woodhull-Smith, who stepped down last month after three seasons at the helm.

"I'm honored to have the opportunity Barton College has given me by working with the swimming teams," said Mallam.  "It will be a thrill watching the team continue to reach high academic standards as well as improving athletically in the pool."

Mallam comes to Barton after serving as Principal, CEO and Head Coach of Excel Swim Company in Peachtree City, Ga.  During that span, Mallam also served as Lead Senior Coach at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla.

Mallam has numerous years of collegiate coaching experience including serving as Associate Head Coach for Men's and Women's Swimming at Arizona State (2015-17) and Men's Swimming at Texas A&M (2013-15).

Mallam also coached at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla., for four years (2009-13) including the last three seasons as Head Coach.  During his tenure at Indian River, Mallam was named NJCAA National Coach of the Year for both Men's and Women's Swimming in 2012 and 2013.

Mallam also headed up Limestone's Men's and Women's Swimming programs in 2008-09.

"We're thrilled to bring a coach with tremendous experience to Barton College," said Tyler.  "Ryan (Mallam) has coached at the highest levels of (NCAA) Division I, including at Arizona State where he worked with legendary Coach Bob Bowman and Olympian Michael Phelps.  He also has previous Division II Head Coaching experience at Limestone College and ran a highly successful junior college program at Indian River."

"Ryan's vision for our program includes success for our student-athletes in the classroom, the pool and the community, and aligns perfectly with the values at Barton College.  I'm excited to make Ryan my first hire at Barton."

Mallam, a 2000 graduate of the University of South Carolina, was also a Special Presenter at the USA Swimming National Swim Coaches Convention in 2014.

Barton men's and women's swimming opens its 2023-24 season on Saturday, September 30, at East Carolina University's Quad Meet at the Minges Natatorium at 1:00 p.m.
