Winbush Named Deputy AD and Chief of Staff

Miami University Director of Athletics David Sayler has announced the addition of Chauncey Winbush as its new Deputy Athletic Director/Chief of Staff. Winbush, who will work directly with Sayler to oversee the day-to-day operations of the athletic department, will begin his duties on Oct. 1, 2023.

Winbush spent the past eight years as the Vice President for Athletics at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W. Va.  Beginning in Aug., 2016, Winbush helped orchestrate a near decade of excellence at SU.
 
Under Winbush's leadership, Shepherd student-athletes captured 231 All-Conference honors and 169 conference Player of the Week awards. They added 154 All-Region, 88 All-American, 15 conference Player of the Year and six conference Coach of the Year honorees over his time at Shepherd. Shepherd teams made 17 regional appearances, gained three regional titles and three conference crowns. Additionally, five teams finished in final national rankings over his eight seasons.

Shepherd student-athletes have also gained measurable success in the classroom. Under Winbush, the Rams recorded 65 Academic All-District and 18 Academic All-American honorees and numerous teams have also garnered team academic honors. 
 
In 2019, Winbush led the Rams in their transition to the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference. Winbush spearheaded the addition of three sports in 2020, adding women's golf along with men's and women's cross country.

"Chauncey will play a key role for our student-athletes, coaches and staff in directing the future of Miami Athletics and throughout the search process he received overwhelming support from several highly respected peers within Intercollegiate Athletics. We are excited to welcome Chauncey and his family to the Miami University community!"

Winbush established the Shepherd University Athletic Club (SUAC) in 2018, which is the fundraising arm of the athletics department. During this time, the SUAC has had tremendous success raising funds in support of the 15 programs within the department.  The SUAC has raised over $900,000 in support of athletics, with funds going to support scholarships, infrastructure projects and equipment needs for the teams. Through the building of relationships within the local community, the SUAC created fundraising opportunities through the building of events such as the, "Ram Fest", as well as campaigns such as "Thankful to be a Ram."  The creation of the SUAC has also helped to propel fundraising efforts for the Ram Gridiron Club, which raised over $700,000 during this timeframe.
  
Prior to Shepherd, Winbush was senior associate athletic director for business services at the Naval Academy Athletic Association in Annapolis, Mary., beginning in 2001. Winbush, who had extensive experience in the management and development of a $45 million annual operating budget in support of 33 varsity sports and 1,500 student-athletes, served as the lead administrator and supervisor of the men's golf and water polo programs. He had day-to-day interaction with athletic programs and staff, addressing issues including compliance, budgets, player discipline, scheduling, recruiting travel issues and facilities, as well as stewardship of donors in support of Navy athletics.

He served as the construction project manager of the $3 million baseball stadium renovation and was responsible for the management of $5 million in investment properties owned by the Naval Academy Alumni Foundation. He oversaw the restricted funds raised by the Naval Academy Alumni Foundation in support of varsity athletics and holds fiscal oversight for the $4 million summer camp program that serves 7,000 children annually. 

In the summer of 2012, the College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) selected Winbush to serve as president for the 2012-13 academic year. Winbush was named the CABMA Business Manager of the Year in 2014.

Before joining the Naval Academy athletics staff, Winbush was assistant director of operations for Emcee Sports in Columbia, Mary., a general ledger staff accountant for Phillips Business Information in Potomac, Mary. and a fund accountant for BT Alex Brown in Baltimore, Mary.

At Shepherd, Winbush earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting with a minor in economics in 1995 and a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management in 2000. He earned a master's degree in tourism administration with a concentration in sport management from George Washington University in 2002.

Winbush, who was inducted into the Shepherd University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, was a standout on the Ram football team from 1990-93. 

Winbush and his wife, Michelle, have two children: Chase and Chloe.
