Kody Duncan Named Men's Tennis Head Coach

Kody Duncan has been named the head coach of the Youngstown State Men's Tennis program, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo announced on Monday.

Duncan joins the Penguins with an experienced background, having led the NCAA Division II Edinboro Fighting Scots women's and men's teams for nearly seven seasons, from 2017-23. In his final four seasons as men's coach at Edinboro, the program went 53-17. The Fighting Scots advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament in five of his full six seasons.

"I'm thrilled to announce that Kody Duncan will be the new head coach of our men's tennis program," Strollo said. "Coach Duncan has a very experienced background as a leader and proven winner at Edinboro. His success in western Pennsylvania as well as on the Division II level, his international recruiting background, and his drive to develop all-around student-athletes both on and off the court make him the perfect fit for the future of our program."

I look forward to the journey ahead and am ready to serve Youngstown State with my utmost dedication and passion for the sport." 

During his tenure as the men's tennis coach at Edinboro, he guided the Fighting Scots to nearly 80 dual victories while posting an impressive 24-3 record in PSAC matches.

He showed his strong background in recruiting internationally student-athletes with Brazil, India, Spain, Africa, Taipei, Slovenia, France and Mexico all represented on his most recent roster at Edinboro.

In 2022-23, he led Edinboro to their third straight PSAC Championship and Duncan earned his first PSAC Coach-of-the-Year honor. The Fighting Scots posted an 18-4 overall record advancing to the NCAA Round of 32. Edinboro was 6-0 in PSAC regular-season play and defeated Bloomsburg and Mercyhurst in the tournament.

During the 2021-22 season Duncan led the men's team to a 15-6 overall record and 5-0 mark in the PSAC. They defeated Mercyhurst in the PSAC championship match for the second consecutive year. The program made it to the round of 16 in the NCAA D2 tournament.

In 2020-21, Edinboro went 11-5 and 5-1 in the PSAC and defeated Bloomsburg and Mercyhurst in the PSAC Tournament. The Fighting Scots beat Mercyhurst 4-2 in Erie to claim the title. In the COVID short spring of 2020, Edinboro was 9-2 when the season was halted.

He also served as the women's coach during his tenure posting 34 victories.

Duncan played for Edinboro from 2011-15 before graduating with a bachelor's degree in HPE – Human Performance. He took over at Edinboro after a short stint at Allegheny College, where he was the assistant men's and women's tennis coach from June 2017 until his appointment as Edinboro's interim head coach.
 
A native of Oil City, Pa., Duncan finished with a 43-26 record in singles action during his time as a player and was 26-28 in doubles play.  He was part of two PSAC championship teams, including the 2013-14 team that finished 19-9, winning the PSAC title and advancing to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16. His top season came in 2012-13, when as a sophomore he earned All-PSAC accolades in doubles play. He finished the year at 18-8 in singles action and 13-7 in doubles.
  
Duncan graduated from Edinboro in the fall of 2015. He served as a volunteer assistant tennis coach at Oil City High School that fall, and has also worked at the Oil City YMCA. In addition, he served as the Oil City boys head soccer coach from August 2015-May 2016. He moved on to Moravian College in July 2016 and remained working in the athletic department as assistant equipment manager.
