Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics, Bruce Filosa, Retires After Four Decades at BC

Brooklyn, NY----After four decades of service to Brooklyn College, BC Director of Athletics, Recreation, and Intramurals, Bruce Filosa, has retired.  Arriving on the Bedford Avenue campus as an assistant football coach in 1981, Filosa served a variety of roles at the college as a coach, professor, and administrator during his tenure.  His legacy at the helm of the athletics program includes a number of achievements from guiding BC back to NCAA Division III membership to a number of conference titles and athletic facilities.  A new Director of Athletics, Recreation ,and Intramurals will be announced in the near future.

A Football Coach from Kings County

Prior to becoming 'Bruce the Athletic Director', he was 'Coach Filosa'.  Beginning his coaching career on the gridiron at nearby Sheepshead Bay HS as an assistant, Filosa accepted a Defensive Backs coach position at Brooklyn College in 1981 and by 1983 he was named Head Coach of the program, making him the youngest Head Football Coach in the NCAA at the time.  Enjoying a successful career at the helm of the program for the next eight seasons, Filosa would also serve as Assistant Director of Recreation and Intramurals and Head Coach of the BC Softball team.  In addition, the former Brooklyn Tech running back served as  President of the Atlantic Collegiate Football Conference.  Filosa's football coaching career at Brooklyn would unfortunately end in 1992 due to budget cuts that suspended intercollegiate athletics at the college.  In 1992, he transitioned to the next phase of his professional career as Director of Recreation and Intramurals before earning the position that he would keep for the remainder of his time at Brooklyn College.

Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics

Filosa was appointed to the position of Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics in 1994, and charged with not only overseeing the existing recreation and intramural programs, but also to restart Intercollegiate Athletics, which was discontinued a couple of years earlier.  Filosa remained at the helm for 28 years, while achieving great heights and encountering many great coaches, administrators and athletes along the way.  Here are some highlights during Filosa's career as Director:
