Siverling resigns as men's basketball coach

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Director of Athletics Jason Verdugo announced Friday that Head Men's Basketball Coach Matt Siverling has resigned from his position.

"It was an honor to lead the Blugold basketball program," Siverling said. "I want to thank God for blessing me and my family with this tremendous opportunity. As a coach you get the chance to develop relationships with many people, and we want to thank everyone who supported us for the last 12 years, especially all the former Blugold basketball players and coaches. Thank you to all the student-athletes we had the privilege to coach. We greatly appreciate all the time and effort you invested into the program. Once a Blugold, always a Blugold!"

Cade Stackpool, who has served as an assistant coach for the Blugolds for the last four seasons, has been named Interim Head Coach and will lead the program during the search for its next head coach.

Siverling coached the Blugolds for 12 seasons from the 2012-13 campaign to 2023-24. He posted a 154-140 record overall and a 61-90 mark in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Blugolds made six WIAC Tournament appearances in that span and competed in the NCAA Tournament once, reaching the second round in 2020.

Siverling joined UW-Eau Claire from UW-Superior in 2012-13 after two seasons as the head coach there. He had previously been an assistant coach for the Blugolds from 2004-07 and earned his undergraduate degree from UW-Eau Claire.

"I appreciate the work and effort Matt has put forth during his tenure, which has some memorable highlights as a Blugold," Verdugo said. "I sincerely wish him the best moving forward."

A national search for a new head coach will commence immediately.

Blugold men's basketball has a proud tradition dating back 108 years. The Blugolds have 18 conference championships, six trips to the national semifinals and three national runner-up finishes to their credit. UW-Eau Claire has a .712 winning percentage across the NCAA and NAIA postseasons and its players have earned 34 All-America honors. The Blugolds have had nine players selected in the National Basketball Association Draft dating back to the 1970s, several more than any other WIAC member. Multiple alumni went on to play in the NBA.

The men's and women's basketball programs will move into the state-of-the-art Sonnentag Event Center ahead of next season. The new arena will usher in a new era of Blugold basketball with the 2024-25 campaign.
