Emma Mertler Chosen as Next Volleyball Head Coach

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Director of Athletics Michael Schulist is proud to announce Emma Mertler as the next head women's volleyball coach.
 
"We are beyond excited to welcome Emma to the Pioneer family," says Schulist. "Her enthusiasm for coaching and leading young women was evident the moment she stepped on campus. I look forward to supporting Emma as she builds the Pioneer volleyball program into a regular CCIW contender."
 
Mertler comes to Carroll after a two-year stint at Morningside University as the assistant coach of the men's volleyball program. Mertler worked alongside the defensive specialists and liberos during practice, as well as administrative duties relating to travel, NAIA eligibility, scouting reports, and recruiting. Mertler's starting Libero at Morningside was named the GPAC Libero of the Year and second-team all-conference in 2022 with 2.76 digs/set in his freshman campaign.
 
"I want to thank Athletic Director Mike Schulist, and the entire hiring committee for the opportunity to lead the Pioneer Women's Volleyball program," says Mertler. "I felt right at home as soon as I stepped on campus. I am excited to start working with the current members of the team to create a new identity and a strong culture within the program."
 
On top of her time at Morningside, Mertler was the head coach and recruiting coordinator for MVP United Volleyball Club in South Dakota. Mertler worked closely with prospective student-athletes throughout the recruiting process. Duties include branding, promotion, coaching group lessons, social media, and relationship building with collegiate coaches. 
 
Mertler graduated from Lakeland University with a Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Development, on top of her Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management and Leadership. Mertler was a member of the Muskies volleyball program for four seasons as the Libero. In her tenure, Mertler recorded 1,436 digs across 442 sets played, in addition to 137 service aces. Mertler is fifth in Lakeland program history in digs and eighth in service aces.
