Staunton, Va. — Jan. 25, 2024 — Mary Baldwin University (MBU) and the Town of Grottoes are partnering to establish Shifflett Field as the new home for the Fighting Squirrels' baseball team

Grottoes officials said the partnership will bring an economic boost as fans of MBU and their collegiate opponents generate business when they travel to the town. Mary Baldwin will benefit from expanded access to a ballfield for practice and games.

"We are thrilled that our excellent ballfield has drawn the attention of a collegiate program such as Mary Baldwin University, and even more excited to partner with them on their use of Grottoes' facilities," said Stefanie McAlister, Grottoes Town Manager. "This partnership will also provide citizens of the town and surrounding areas with additional opportunities to enjoy America's favorite pastime."

Located about 20 miles northeast of Staunton on the border of Augusta and Rockingham counties, Grottoes is home to Daryl Irvine, former relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox as well as former NBA player Dell Curry.

MBU will share the three-field complex with the Grottoes Cardinals, a member of the 100-year-old Rockingham County Baseball League, a summer baseball league that includes teams up and down the Shenandoah Valley. Located in John E. Painter Park, Shifflett Field was built in 2006.

The Fighting Squirrels have called Staunton's John Moxie Stadium in Gypsy Hill Park home since the formation of the team in 2019, sharing the field with inter-collegiate Staunton Braves summer baseball team and Staunton High School's varsity and junior varsity baseball squads.

"Moxie is where we got our start, and we are grateful for the support we've received from the City of Staunton and the partnership that helped build MBU baseball," said MBU Head Baseball Coach Scott Hearn. "The decision to move is bittersweet, and we are excited to grow the program at Shifflett Field."

The move allows MBU players more practice and playing time and provides a playing facility more inline with current collegiate standards. At 380 feet to center field and 370 to the power alleys, the dimensions at the Grottoes ballpark are closer to NCAA requirements.

The Fighting Squirrel's season opener – a double header against the Mustangs of Stevenson University – is set for noon Feb. 17 at Shifflett Field.
