LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Dr. Tom Gioglio, Lock Haven Director of Athletics, has announced that he plans to retire from The Haven this summer.

In his ninth year at Lock Haven, Gioglio took the helm of the Bald Eagles' athletic department prior to the start of the 2015-16 academic year. Gioglio joined The Haven family after 11 years at fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) institution East Stroudsburg.

"Congratulations to Dr. Gioglio on his retirement following an incredible career leading athletic departments at Lock Haven and across the PSAC," said Bashar W. Hanna, Commonwealth University President. "We are grateful to Dr. Gioglio for his skillful leadership at the helm of Haven Athletics for the past nine years. During his time at The Haven, the Bald Eagles have achieved numerous awards and accolades. Dr. Gioglio has served as a champion for our student-athletes' success, both on the playing field and in the classroom. Thank you to Dr. Gioglio for his commitment to Lock Haven students and for supporting their growth and success. The entire Commonwealth University family wishes you all the best in retirement."

"Dr. Gioglio has successfully led the athletic department at Lock Haven for many years and his accomplishments are many," said Stephen Lee, Commonwealth University Vice President and Lock Haven Campus Administrator. "He has upheld the highest standards for academic and athletic excellence during his tenure.  During his time as athletic director, Dr. Gioglio has promoted the long and storied tradition of Lock Haven athletics, serving an integral role in the culture and mission of the University. We have been very fortunate to have Dr. Gioglio as Athletic Director and he will be missed. We wish him the very best in retirement."

Gioglio's retirement will come after a remarkable 25-plus years in athletic administration, which included 20 successful years in the PSAC, one of the premier conferences in all of NCAA Division II athletics. He is currently the longest-serving active athletic director in the league.

"It has been a privilege and an honor to serve thousands of students while leading and working alongside some of the most dedicated and outstanding coaches and staff members in the country," Gioglio said. "I am proud of what we have accomplished at Lock Haven and I am excited to see the many athletic department successes that will come next".

During his tenure, Lock Haven student-athletes excelled academically. Most recently, over 500 student-athletes achieved a grade-point-average of 3.145 in 2023-23, which is well above the national average. In all, 15 teams achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and Lock Haven produced 177 PSAC scholar-athletes in 2022-23.

Behind his leadership, the Lock Haven Social Justice Task Force was established and the Athletic Department's Performance Programing Initiative formalized. Gioglio was instrumental in facility upgrades, revenue generation and community service support, among many other initiatives that strengthened the student-athlete experience at The Haven.

Notably, Gioglio successfully expanded Lock Haven's sport participation offerings with the addition of women's wrestling, women's golf and women's tennis.

From a competitive standpoint, the list of honors during Gioglio's tenure goes on. In 2023, the women's wrestling team finished 11th in the country. During the 2022 and 2023 seasons, the men's wrestling team won its first and second Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships. In 2019, the men's wrestling team finished in the Top-20 at the NCAA Division I Championships for the second consecutive year. The softball team won the 2019 PSAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In 2016-17, the baseball team advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2009 and broke the school record for wins. In 2015, the men's cross country won the PSAC Championship, finished second in the Atlantic Region and 11th nationally.

The Bald Eagles are the midst of another extremely successful season. The Lock Haven football team turned in a historic effort in 2023 and finished with the most wins in a season since 1982.  The volleyball team returned to the postseason and recorded their most wins since 2017. Currently, the men's wrestling team, women's wrestling and women's basketball team are all nationally ranked, and both the men's and women's basketball teams are enjoying sensational runs in PSAC play and both have clinched berths into the postseason conference tournament.

A search for a new Director of Athletics will be forthcoming.
