Macheli Named Acting Tennis Head Coach

NEWBERRY – Newberry College has named Aletta Macheli the acting head coach for the Men's and Women's Tennis starting in the 2024 spring season. Macheli will have assistant coach Mark Gardiner returning as a full-time assistant for the 2024 spring season. 
 
Macheli was the assistant coach for the Wolves in the 2023-24 fall season.
 
Macheli joins the Newberry staff after being a graduate assistant for East Texas Baptist University's tennis teams for the 2022-23 season. As a Tiger, Macheli helped lead East Texas Baptist to a regional ranking for the first time since 2019.
 
"We are excited to elevate Coach Macheli to serve as our head coach." Newberry College athletic director Sean Johnson said.  "I have total confidence that she will lead our team to success this spring and hopefully into the future.  We are so fortunate to have Coach Gardiner return to our staff as a fulltime employee this spring.  I know the two of them will do a great job leading our student-athletes."
 
Macheli also held private lessons at Longview High School in Texas, where she taught the basics of Tennis, along with technique and skills to players of all ages.
 
The Wolves open their spring season as the women will travel to Due West to face Erskine on February 1st. The men's tennis team will start their season February 8th as they host Francis Marion at the Oakland Mills Tennis Center.
