NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College Director of Athletics Jason Lener has announced the hiring of Michael Frey (pronounced fry) as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs.

"We are excited to have Michael join Westminster as our head tennis coach," Lener said. "Throughout the interview process it was evident that Michael is very passionate about student-athlete development, and after decades of experience working with and around the collegiate environment he understands the unique opportunities an educational community like Westminster can offer. Michael is a proven teacher, a positive motivator, an effective communicator and a continuous learner -- all attributes we identified going into the search as must-have qualities for our next head coach."

Frey spent six years as a volunteer assistant coach for the Grove City High School girl's tennis program, helping head coach Dr. Michael Coulter and the Eagles advance to the District 10 AA semifinals last fall. He developed individualized training programs, conducted skills assessments and educated players on game strategies and rules while also leading practice sessions and drills to aid in player development.

Frey recently retired as lead pastor after 10 years at the Fellowship Community Church in Grove City. He also spent over 20 years coaching college student leaders as a part of Campus Crusade for Christ International (Cru), an interdenominational, internationally-focused faith-based campus ministry helping people all over the world on high school and college campuses connect with a mentor, discover their purpose and live that out in their communities. He served as an area director for Cru in Grove City from 1997-2012 after six years as a senior staffer for Cru in State College.

In 2005 Frey founded Cru's Ocean City, Md. Summer Mission, a 10-week program that places a high emphasis on student ownership and leadership development, and directed the program until 2011. He recruited regionally and nationally for improved student involvement and created leadership development programming and curriculum for both staff and student participants.

Frey is a 1991 graduate of Wright State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts. An active member of the Grove City community, he has served as president of the Grove City disc golf club since 2011. Frey and his wife Carol have been married for 32 years.
