Salem Launches Men’s Wrestling, Reboots Swimming Programs

SALEM, West Virginia - While the focus has been on the field of competition for Salem Athletics, there is some big news coming from the Salem University Athletics Department as the year of 2023 comes to a close. Salem University will be launching 3 new sports in the coming years, all of which will compete as NCAA Division II varsity level sports.

First, the Men's and Women's Swimming programs will make a return to competition for the Tigers after a 1 year hiatus for the 2023-2024 season. The Tigers return to the pool on campus in Salem, and will also have an opportunity to train and compete at The Bridge Sports Complex as needed. A national search will begin immediately for a head coach that will lead both the men's and women's teams of Tiger swimmers.

Second, Salem will be launching a brand new sport for the Tigers in the near future, namely men's wrestling. Much like the swimming programs, a national search will also begin immediately for the first ever coach of the Salem Tigers wrestling program. Salem wrestling will train and compete using the existing facilities at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium as well as The Bridge Sports Complex if needed.

Athletic Director Alex Joseph made the following comments around this new step for Salem Athletics, "We are thrilled to add both Men's and Women's Swimming and Wrestling as we continue to expand our athletic offerings. These additions will strengthen our athletic profile while creating new opportunities for our campus and community."

Salem University Athletics remains committed to creating top experiences for all our student-athletes as full members of NCAA Division II and USCAA Division I. Salem University is excited to see the growth and development of the athletic department in order to better serve all our students and build our campus community.
