Adrian College Mourns the Loss of Women's Rugby Player and Wrestler, Katelyn Edgell

The Adrian College community was silenced with news on Tuesday, December 26, 2023. The community became aware of the passing of fellow Bulldog, Katelyn Edgell. Edgell was a native of Sandy, Utah and was a freshman at Adrian College where she was a member of the women's rugby team and women's wrestling team.

Edgell was a member of the rugby team that competed in the NIRA Division III National Finals this past fall where the team was named the National Runner-Up. Rugby was a passion of Edgell that she found in high school where she began playing before college. For the women's wrestling team, Edgell hadn't wrestled in a match for Adrian College, but still enjoyed being a member of the team.

A visitation was held in Utah on December 29-30, 2023 followed by the funeral on the 30th. The Adrian College community shares our deepest condolences with the Edgell family, and all of Katelyn's friends, teammates, and coaches.

Full obituary below.

"Our bright light, Katelyn Marie Edgell, had her sun set on the evening of Tuesday, December 26th, 2023. She was welcomed into the arms of her Heavenly Father, along with many of her family members including her maternal Grandma Donna, her paternal Grandpa Daniel, and her Uncle Adam and Aunt Krystal.

Katelyn was born on April 9th, 2005 to Mark and Liza Edgell. Just 14 months younger than her brother, Benjamin (19), they grew up inseparable, and the best of friends. Katelyn gained additional siblings with her Dad's marriage to Anna-Marie Rowley and loved and embraced her new role as big sister and super hero to Hope (21), Ryan (15), and her little sidekick, Cara (8). In addition to her immediate family, Katelyn also leaves behind her maternal Grandpa, paternal Grandma, Step-Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and communities of friends, teachers, team-mates, peers, along with her boyfriend, Travis.

Katelyn was a lover of many things. Animals both great and small were powerless against her charms. If it swam, flew, or crawled, Katelyn loved it. Her dog, Bayre, couldn't leave her side and her cat, Stormy, loved to aggravate her allergies. Katelyn had a special fondness for horses and enjoyed volunteering for Freedom Riders Horse Therapy Program. Katelyn found a love for music in the flute and the piccolo and after joining the Brighton High Marching Band, she picked up and played the trumpet like a boss. Katelyn was a natural on the wrestling mat and amazing to witness. Coach Yee said Katelyn laid the foundation for success in Girl's Wrestling at Brighton High School. Katelyn was Captain of the team her senior year and an inspiration to many teammates and will be remembered lovingly in the Brighton High Wrestling Program forever. Later she found Women's Rugby and couldn't keep herself off the field. She loved the sport and her position as tight head prop, but loved her teammates even more. She began rugby at Brighton High School and continued the magic at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan.

On and off the field, Katelyn was fierce, brave, and unstoppable. She set the pace for all those on the same path. In high school, she lettered in marching band, wrestling, and rugby. Katelyn was blessed with an amazing artistic talent, a steady hand for competitive shooting, and a warm spot in her heart for little children. She was a brilliant student. Her aspiration to become a neurosurgeon was driven by her curiosity and fascination with medicine. She graduated high school with her Medical Assistant Certification. Katelyn enjoyed everything Adrian College had to offer to advance her wrestling, rugby, and medical career.

Katelyn was quiet with a mischievous smile and a soul piercing gaze. She was also boisterous and giggly. It was the most perfect combination. She was beautiful inside and out. She will be missed every day in every moment. She made everything brighter.

Katelyn's family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Willow Hills Ward family for their continued support. A special thanks to marching band director, Mikala Mortensen, Coach Christine Yee, Coach Bronson Weaver, Coach Mike Bowen, and all the educators that made an impact and shaped Katelyn into the woman she became. To all of Katelyn's many friends from coast to coast, thank you for bringing her joy. To the emergency personnel, first responders, and medical professionals at Ogden Regional Medical Center, thank you for holding Katelyn in your tender arms for her final moments.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2535 Newcastle Drive, Sandy, Utah.
