LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Former University of Louisville athletics director Vince Tyra has been named the incoming CEO at Gildan Activewear Inc., a global apparel manufacturer with more than $3 billion in annual sales and 50,000 employees.

Tyra, a former executive at apparel-maker Fruit of the Loom and holding company Houchens Industries, led the U of L athletics department from 2018-21.

Gildan, based in Montréal, Canada, makes clothing under several brands including American Apparel, Comfort Colors and GoldToe — a "fantastic company and opportunity," Tyra told WDRB News on Monday.

The company was worth nearly $6 billion as of Monday's stock price.

Tyra will continue to live in Louisville, but the job will require a lot of travel, he said.

"Louisville will be my home base and Montréal will be my second home and my primary office," Tyra said. "It's a global company with operations from Honduras to Barbados to Bangladesh and more, so I'll be on the move for sure."
