Mauro Selected as Head Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach at WPI

Emily Mauro
WORCESTER -- WPI Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Brian Chabot and Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Dana L. Harmon recently announced the hiring of Emily Mauro as the head coach of men's and women's track and field. Mauro replaces Miles Ketchum, who was named the head coach at Brandeis after 12 years at WPI, including the last two head coach for the Engineers.

"It is a new era for WPI Track & Field, and I couldn't be more excited for Emily to lead us into the future," said Chabot. "We had a lot of qualified candidates looking to join us but, in the end, Emily stood out among them. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, having not only coached every event group that Track & Field has to offer, but her background in athletic training, as well as sports psychology should all benefit our student-athletes tremendously, as we look to build upon the success we've achieved, especially in the last 5-6 years.

"We are very happy that Emily is joining WPI Athletics and will be leading our men's and women's track and field program moving forward," remarked Harmon.  "She is an accomplished professional who takes a holistic approach to coaching that will help our student-athletes thrive under her leadership now and into the future."

Mauro arrives at WPI after spending the last two years just down Park Ave., serving as the first full-time head men's and women's cross country coach at Clark.   She was also the Director of Club Sports for the Cougars and this season took on the responsibilities centered around athlete success, including heading a Student-Athlete Mental Health Committee, advising the Clark Athlete's Inclusion Committee, aiding in the Leadership Council, and heading efforts to align team expectations within the department.

Prior to Clark, Mauro spent two years as an assistant cross country and track and field Coach at Connecticut College.  Mauro was responsible for every aspect of training for the Camel sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, pole vaulters, and throwers including planning daily technical and strength training, goal setting/tracking, sport psychology sessions, and cultivating meaningful relationships with student-athletes.

"I am so grateful for the opportunity to coach this outstanding team!," stated Mauro.  "Throughout the interview process, it was made clear that this team is filled with caring, dedicated, driven, students of the sport.  I am ecstatic to be a part of this all-star coaching staff.  I cannot wait to learn, grow, and collaborate together.  The track and field program at WPI is exceptional, and I am so honored to be a part of it."

Mauro was a four-year scholarship track and field student-athlete at Merrimack, where she earned her undergraduate degree in athletic training.  She then spent two years at the University of Tennessee where she received her master's degree in kinesiology and served as an assistant coach at the Knoxville Track and Field Club.  While in Knoxville, Mauro was a mental performance coach an athletic trainer at South Doyle High School.

"I cannot wait to collaborate with Emily and grow this program into one that will continue to compete at the highest levels our sport has to offer," concluded Chabot."
