D2 ADA Model Athletics Department Updates

2023 Model Athletics Department Document

CLEVELAND – In 2002, the Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) released its initial Division II Model Athletics Department document outlining the principles and features by which an ideal athletics department at the Division II level should be built. Through the years, several iterations of the document have been released, with the most recent revision approved by both the NCAA President's Council and Management Council. In addition, the D2 ADA and Division II Conference Commissioners Association have endorsed this document.

"We are excited to release this updated version of the Model Athletics Department document," said D2 ADA President and Cal State Monterey Bay, Director of Athletics, Kirby Garry. " We believe this document represents the best reflection of a sustainable, balanced and healthy approach to NCAA Division II athletics on a college campus. Special thank you to Tim Selgo of Mammoth Consulting for his support of D2ADA on this important project."

The Model Athletics Department document is broken down by the following sections:

  • Guiding Principles and strategic goals to enhance athletics operations; and
  • Samples of Division II athletics program methodologies and initiatives that have helped existing members be successful.

While Division II has a diverse membership of varying sizes and institutional missions, the athletics program should be an extension of the educational mission of the institution and reflect the standards of higher education. The information contained in this document is provided as a reference and does not constitute binding advice on any member institution.
