Paul Smith departs from Griffon Athletics

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.  Paul Smith, senior associate director of athletics for external relations at Missouri Western State, will depart the university during the semester break, Director of Athletics Andy Carter announced Thursday.

A member of the Griffons' athletic staff since 2022, Smith has accepted a remote opportunity that will allow him to spend more time with his family.

"This is truly a bittersweet moment for me," Smith said. "I have had the opportunity to make so many new friends through this position and more importantly, make a home for myself in St. Joseph. This new opportunity is a tremendous one for my family and me  one that I could not pass up. I am excited about the direction that this department and university are headed, and I am excited to see that continue as a fan."

During his time at Western, Smith spearheaded several initiatives aimed at improving the student-athlete and fan experience, including the modernizing of the Gold Coat Victory Fund structure and the new Hillyard Courtside Club premium seating area at Griffon basketball games.

"Having Paul on our team, even for this short time, has been invaluable in changing the trajectory of Griffon Athletics," Carter said. "His experience, personality and relational approach accelerated our ability to make necessary changes while staying true to our mission and vision. I am very excited for Paul, Amanda and their family and count on his friendship and support as we move into the next phase of development for our athletics program."

A national search for Smith's replacement will begin immediately.
