NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Carleton College has made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the 2023-24 women's basketball season due to an injury-depleted roster. The Knights entered the year with 10 players on the roster, but injuries have left Carleton with only six medically-cleared players, a number too low to adequately protect the health and safety of the remaining student-athletes on the team.
 
"Obviously this was a very difficult decision, and one that is disappointing for everyone involved," said Carleton athletic director Gerald Young. "However, the health and well-being of our student-athletes is paramount. Therefore, after consulting with our sports medicine staff, it became apparent this is in the players' best interest.
 
"It was also important to make the decision at this point to provide clarity to our MIAC and non-conference opponents"
 
The Knights were previously forced to cancel the scheduled season opener on Nov. 11 at North Central University after multiple players sustained significant injuries in the days leading up to that contest.
 
"I am heartbroken for each of these women," said Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "They have done everything they could to make this work, to sacrifice for their teammates. But the reality is that playing games two or three times a week simply was not sustainable with the number of healthy players who remained. As coaches, we are already focused on preparing our players for next season as they will be practicing as their health allows throughout the remainder of this season."
 
Per NCAA policy, all 2023-24 season games involving the Carleton women's basketball team will be declared "no contests."
