Derek Marie Steps Down As Carroll Men's Soccer Coach

After six years at the helm of Carroll's men's soccer program, Derek Marie is stepping down as the third Head Coach in program history to pursue other professional opportunities. After a stellar playing career for the Pioneers, Marie served as the Pios' Head Coach for 88 games, compiling a career record of 33-51-4, while coaching seven All-Conference players during that span.

"As I reflect back on the 16 years spent being a part of this program I am filled with nothing but gratitude and a deep sense of pride. Carroll is an incredible  place with special people which gave me some of the greatest moments of my life," Marie said. "I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the players who gave their all, the coaches who made everything  possible and those that always supported us. Your commitment and camaraderie have made this journey immensely rewarding."

A 2009 graduate of Carroll with a bachelors degree in Business Marketing, Marie was a standout player as a student-athlete for the Pioneers, earning All-Conference honors in each of his four seasons, making him one of just three players in program history to accomplish that feat. A native of Stevens Point, Wis., Marie also garnered state and regional recognition during his career, with first-team all-Wisconsin and second-team All-Central Region accolades following his junior campaign. He played a vital role in Carroll's first-ever Midwest Conference title in 2007 and the team's first Midwest Conference Championship in 2008, which also marked the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

"I would also like to express my gratitude to the leadership of Carroll Athletic Director Mike Schulist, Associate Athletic Director Mark Krzykowski and all of my coaching colleagues for their unwavering support throughout the years. It has been an honor to represent my alma mater and I am grateful for the opportunities it has afforded me."

After graduation, Marie was a student-assistant coach for the Pioneers in 2009, before going on to serve as assistant coach for the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team the following year. Marie returned to his alma mater in 2013 as an assistant men's soccer coach for the Pios, before being named the Head Coach prior to the 2018 season.

"Derek has been a key part of Carroll's men's soccer program for almost 20 years. He has gone from player, to assistant coach to head coach, and has truly poured his life into this program for a long time," Carroll Athletics Director Mike Schulist said. "The relationships, mentoring and success that Derek has experienced in his Carroll career are endless, and his infectious energy and never-ending support for his players, alumni and colleagues will be sorely missed."

In addition to his soccer coaching duties, Marie also served as Carroll's Athletics Student Success Director, and as the Pioneers' representative on the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin's (CCIW) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee.

"The next coach will be taking over a fantastic program because of the trail that Derek has built," Schulist said. "I wish Derek nothing but the best during his next chapter, and I know he will be a Pioneer for life."

A nationwide search for Marie's replacement will begin immediately.
