Athletics Veritas is a weekly series aimed at helping higher education executives, faculty, and other stakeholders stay tuned in on trending national issues impacting college athletics, especially NCAA Division I. Athletics Veritas is created by senior DI athletic administrators around the nation.
Term-In-Ology: An NCAA Division I Member Institution
Division I membership is available to four-year colleges and universities that are accredited by one of the regional accrediting agencies and are located in the United States, its territories or possessions, and athletics conferences. Such institutions or organizations must accept and observe the principles set forth in the constitution and bylaws of the Association.

An active member is a four-year college or university that is accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency and duly elected to active membership as specified in NCAA Constitution.

Active members have the right to compete in NCAA championships, to vote on legislation and other issues, and to enjoy other privileges of membership designated in the constitution and bylaws of the Association.

Next Tuesday’s Athletics Veritas will dive deeper into how the NCAA defines its active member institutions, whether any international universities may become NCAA members, how for-profit institutions have brought the NCAA’s non-profit status in to focus, how the NCAA defines “collegiate institution” for student-athlete eligibility purposes, and more.
