Athletics Veritas is a weekly series aimed at helping higher education executives, faculty, and other stakeholders stay tuned in on trending national issues impacting college athletics, especially NCAA Division I. Athletics Veritas is created by senior DI athletic administrators around the nation.
Term-in-Ology:When Prospects Participate in Voluntary Summer Activities on Your Campus… and Get Injured
When it comes to prospects getting injured in a Division I institution’s facilities while participating in voluntary workouts (as well as summer access activities in football and basketball or on-campus evaluations in basketball), the ability for the Division I institution to cover medical expenses supersedes concerns about such benefits constituting a recruiting inducement.
Specifically, an institution may finance medical expenses (including rehabilitation and physical therapy expenses) for a prospect who sustains an injury while participating in voluntary summer workouts conducted by an institution's strength and conditioning coach who is not a countable coach in any sport or while participating in required football or basketball summer athletic activities or in on-campus evaluations in basketball.
