Term-in-Ology:For Spring Sport Athletes Thinking Transfer Portal, July 1 is a Date to Circle
For a spring sport student-athlete to take advantage of the one-time transfer exception, the student-athlete must provide written notification of transfer to the institution by July 1. For fall and winter sports, the deadline is May 1.
The reason these dates were established were to provide stability and finality to those impacted by transfer decisions; the proposal includes notification of transfer dates by which a student-athlete must indicate intent to transfer in order to qualify for the proposed exception.
What will be interesting to watch as we move in to 2022-23 is whether Division I will establish transfer windows to make the timing and impacts of these decisions more manageable for coaches, student-athletes, and the institutions enrolling them.
