Term-in-Ology: Can Student-Athletes Keep Their Aid (And Not Play For A New Coach) If Their Head Coach Departs?

To avoid contentious “run-offs” with incumbent players by a new head coach trying to open up scholarships to recruit new players, Division I adopted a legislated exception in which a student-athlete who receives athletically-related institutional financial aid in subsequent academic years after the departure of a head coach from the institution is not a counter against team scholarship limits in a year in which the student-athlete does not participate in intercollegiate athletics, provided:

(a) The student-athlete participated in the applicable sport and received athletically related institutional financial aid during the coach's tenure at the institution; and

(b) The student-athlete does not participate in the applicable sport beyond the next regular academic year (including completion of the championship season in spring sports) after the departure of the head coach.

This exception allows for student-athletes who may be close to graduating, for example, and don’t have incentive to transfer, but may not want to continue on in their sport with a new coach, to stay, keep their athletics scholarship, but not count against team limits for the new coach.

However, if the student-athlete subsequently participates in the applicable sport at the institution, the student-athlete shall become a counter for all years during which athletically related institutional aid was received.
