Term-in-Ology: The Reporting Requirement when Severe Weather Interrupts a Division I Team’s Declared Playing Season

Although we may be enjoying the summer sun these days, NCAA playing and practice season rules hold that an institution may temporarily discontinue its playing season segment due to severe inclement weather (e.g., hurricane, snowstorm), and restart the discontinued segment provided the permissible overall length of that segment is not exceeded.

Per this NCAA exception, a Division I institution that uses this exception is required to annually submit a detailed summary to the NCAA national office by July 31 (this week).

In light of the potential for tectonic shifts in policy and philosophy on the horizon as the Division I membership awaits recommendations from the Division I Transformation Committee, this micro-situation severe weather reporting requirement may find the cutting room floor and be removed out of the NCAA manual, deferring such matters to conference-level oversight instead of channeling them through the NCAA national office.
