Term-in-Ology: Campus Tours During Camps and Clinics
Camps and clinics are not solely a summer undertaking. Even though the academic year has started at many universities across the country, camps and clinics are often offered by Division I sport programs’ coaches during the fall.
In the spirit of saving time and money, NCAA rules allow for sports (other than women's basketball) to allow an institution's coach to arrange or conduct a campus tour during a school-sponsored camp or clinic-- provided that the format of the tour has been approved by an institutional authority outside the athletics department (e.g., admissions office).
As we know, camps and clinics are a parallel recruiting tool for coaches to see and get to know prospects in their sport in addition to the intrinsic value of teaching and developing the campers skill set.
Beyond camp and clinic sport programming, prospects can benefit from taking a campus tour to learn more about the university, meet with Admissions, check out the university’s welcome center, and visit residence halls, student commons and food courts or dining halls while they are already on or near campus to attend a camp or clinic.
