Term-in-Ology: New Year, New Computer, New Violin

Coming from the Alston/grant-in-aid litigation decided in 2021 before the Supreme Court, an NCAA conference or Division I institution may provide to student-athletes the following benefits related to education without limitations:

(a) Computers, science equipment, musical instruments and other tangible items not included in the cost of attendance calculation but nonetheless related to the pursuit of academic studies;

(b) Tutoring;

(c) Expenses related to studying abroad that are not included in the cost of attendance calculation; and

(d) Paid post-eligibility internships.

Some NCAA member schools have been providing these resources to date in some form or fashion. The Alston case solidified that schools do have ability to provide these items of value related to education without limit when such items are not included in a student-athlete’s cost of attendance calculation.
