Futbol Mundial vs. College Football

Executive Summary

  • The 2022 World Cup represents the first time that the world’s biggest sporting event is scheduled against traditional college football games
  • The day after Thanksgiving presents an abundance of world futbol and college football to choose from— and some time slots overlap on the dial
  • School loyalty will be competing against patriotism for viewership
  • The 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar estimated to draw 5 billion (yes billion) viewers worldwide
  • Fox purchased the English broadcast rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups for $400M
  • The highest rated viewership for a college football game this year was 13+ Million viewers (Tennessee v Georgia)
  • The overlapping sporting events may be a catalyst for college conferences and TV/media executives to think how to market college football to the world like the NBA and NFL has with its leagues.

The biggest sporting event in the world got bumped to a different time of year like a long-awaited dental appointment getting kicked down the road. The Men’s World Cup is usually played in the summer months of June and July. However, due to logistics and average temperatures in the host country of Qatar, the event was moved by FIFA— soccer’s international governing body— to this November and December. The “Copa Mundial” group-play matches begin this Sunday.

Team USA, led by Christian “Captain America” Pulisic and the recently selected men’s national team roster, begin its World Cup play next week (Monday, November 21) when it faces Wales and star forward/LA Galaxy player Gareth Bale as part of “Group B” play.

Then on Friday, November 25th (the day after Thanksgiving), Team USA plays the “Three Lions”— Team England in another group play match. Teams USA and England are two teams with the biggest viewership draws and marquee players facing off in the first week of the tournament.

November 25th is a date that has been circled by sports fans and TV executives everywhere. It is novel ground to have World Cup matches scheduled at the same time as long traditional college football games over Thanksgiving weekend, but here we are.

Looking a little closer, Team USA and Team England will face off at 2pm ET on Friday November 25th and the game will be aired in North America on FOX. The World Cup will have four matches scheduled on Friday November 25 – with the first one airing at 5:00am ET (due to the time difference with Qatar).

In terms of college football on the slate on Friday November 25th, four key games begin at 3:00pm or 3:30pm ET— which is when Team USA and Team England will be in the second half of their match, accounting for stoppage time and the halftime window. The college football games that run into the USA vs England soccer match’s second half will include the Pac 12’s Arizona State at Arizona game at 3:00pm ET (FS1)  and three games that kick-off at 3:30pm ET: the ACC’s NC State at North Carolina (ABC), the SEC’s Arkansas at Missouri (CBS), and the Mountain West’s New Mexico at Colorado State (CBSSN).

If for some reason the start of the USA-England match is delayed or incurs multiple stoppages (e.g., injuries that delay play), the game could creep toward the 4:00pm ET TV window where the Big Ten’s game of the day— Nebraska at Iowa begins along with another Pac-12 game— UCLA at California.

For both college football and the World Cup, there are a lot of eyeballs and money at stake driving the media rights deals. To be fair, this is an apple to oranges comparison when looking at the broadcast rights and scope of college football (primarily the United States) vs the World Cup (the United States and the rest of the planet). According to Front Office Sports, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is expected to be watched by 5 billion people around the world, far surpassing the record 3.5 billion who tuned in to the 2018 edition in Russia. By comparison, the highest rated college football game this year drew 13M+ viewers---actually a very formidable number but not in the same zip code as the world’s biggest sporting event.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino publicized the anticipated number for the first World Cup in the Middle East. Fox purchased the English broadcasting rights for the 2018 and 2022 tournament for $400 million.

The full World Cup Schedule is captured below. Happy footballing.
