In the second installment of a two-part interview with 247Sports’ David H. Murray, Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon confirms the baseball and basketball programs are part of MSU’s facilities master plan. “You always think maybe Dudy Noble can't be better. That's if you compare it to other people – and there is no comparison in college baseball to Dudy Noble – I think that's the great thing about State. We're not comparing to other people, we're comparing against ourselves and how do we make it better? So the master plan is all elements of how can we make it better for student-athletes, but also new fan amenities, new seating options that will really take Dudy Noble to another level. The same with Humphrey Coliseum. We're undergoing a renovation there for team locker rooms. Both the men's and women's teams' locker rooms are getting revamped and will be ready for next season. Also, the training room there. But we're also looking at everything from scoreboards to in-game elements, to what is the next phase the team will need in three-to-five years.” Selmon says the Bulldogs have had “positive conversations” with Adidas about what their future partnership could look like, “but also I think with some of the momentum that we've had there's always going to be interest in Mississippi State. So hopefully we can announce some things soon. But those conversations are ongoing. The last time I met with Adidas in-person was at the Final Four this year." More from Selmon. (link)

Bailey & Glasser attorney Arthur Bryant, who has represented more women athletes in Title IX litigation than any attorney in the country, tells On3’s Eric Prisbell that any type of revenue sharing will require men and women to receive equal treatment and benefits. Bryant explains that when it comes to "straight-out payments" – like scholarship dollars, for instance – "equal" means proportional. "If 60% of the student-athletes are women and Title IX applies, they basically need to receive 60% of the revenue-sharing dollars shared.” However, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter believes that if Title IX factors for college athletics are strictly applied to market-based payments, Title IX does not apply to those payments, although Prisbell notes there won't be a firm answer until either the U.S. Department of Education weighs in or the issue is litigated. As such, athletic departments are likely to proceed with caution on their end, leaving room for collectives to continue serving an important role. Winter: “Some schools will still likely make NIL payments through third parties. Not only because they don't want to try and replicate everything that collectives or other third-party entities do. But because they view it as providing some insulation from Title IX [because the third party is outside the school's umbrella] and providing other liability protections." (link)

A report released Thursday by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that during the 2021-22 academic year, 93% of universities had female athletic participation rates lower than their enrollment rate. Meanwhile, 63% of schools had participation-enrollment gaps of 10% or more. The athletic participation rate for collegiate women overall was 14% less than their enrollment rate. Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “The report also took to task the federal sub-agency responsible for overseeing Title IX compliance—the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights—concluding it has made only limited use of available Title IX data in its oversight purposes and is slow in its monitoring processes. GAO based that conclusion on a review of OCR case management data from 2008 to 2022. Even when schools entered into formal agreements to improve Title IX compliance, OCR routinely dragged its feet to provide feedback. For example, in 10 of 26 cases GAO reviewed, the Office of Civil Rights took more than a year to review and approve a school’s plans to get into compliance; in five cases, OCR went silent for over five years.” Bailey & Glasser attorney Arthur Bryant: “This report confirms the sad, shameful truth. Most colleges in America are violating Title IX and depriving women of equal opportunities to participate in intercollegiate athletics. The federal government isn’t enforcing the law and making them comply like it should. So this illegal sex discrimination is continuing. If girls and women want it to stop, they have to be willing to stand up, fight, and sue.” More from Libit. (link)

The Alcorn State D1.dossier is ready for those of you with an eye on leading the Braves. North Alabama AD Josh Looney: “It was a wonderful tool to provide a ‘first look’ behind the curtain at the University, particularly beyond Athletics. It really helped me better understand the ‘voice’ on campus behind the numbers that I was able to pull. I also found great value in your log of presidential communication and archive of news narratives.” (link)

Rice will add women’s golf to its portfolio of sports, thanks to a $5M commitment from former Owls women’s basketball player Lynn Laverty Elsenhans and her husband, John. Elsenhans, who has served multiple terms on the Rice Board of Trustees, spent 28 years working at Shell and another four at Sunoco, retiring as CEO in 2012. Owls AD Tommy McClelland: “In our conversations with Lynn, she made it very clear that this was a sport she wanted to support, and it is one that made sense. 25 schools in the state of Texas compete at the Division I level. 24 of them have women's golf. Rice was the only one that did not... until now.” A search for a head coach will begin immediately, with the team first competing during the 2026-27 academic year. (link)

Two days after announcing that Florida A&M was the recipient of a $237M donation, FAMU President Larry Robinson notified the Blueprint board that the school was no longer interested in pursuing $15M in additional funding for Bragg Stadium improvements. The board, made up of all 12 city and county commissioners, approved $10M for major renovations to Bragg in 2020 and last year the school asked for an additional $15M. In a letter on Monday to Leon County Commissioner Carolyn Cummings, who chairs the Blueprint board, Robinson thanked the agency, but added: “However, at this time we are withdrawing our request for additional assistance from the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency for Bragg Memorial Stadium. We look forward to continuing to work with you, the Blueprint Board of Directors and Blueprint staff in other ways going forward.” The school put the Batterson Farms Corp/Gregory Gerami donation “on hold” on Thursday, according to the Tallahassee Democrat’s Jeff Burlew, who notes “It's unclear whether FAMU's decision to backtrack on its most recent Blueprint request was directly related to Gerami's would-be donation.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake wonders if UCLA’s potential annual $10M “Calimony” payment to the Golden Bears will result in some regret making the Big Ten move. Canzano: “The ‘Calimony’ payment, if approved on May 14, will run through 2030. That’s a $60 million hit to a university that justified blowing up 108 years of history by announcing it was operating at a financial disadvantage in the Pac-12. [...] Had UCLA stayed in the Pac-12, a potential media-rights deal would have captured the Los Angeles market. That’s 5.9 million TV homes. Remember the $30 million per school offer ESPN made to the Pac-12 CEO Group in the fall of 2022? It might have easily been $40 million per school with LA still part of the deal. Also, the Bruins might have used their new-found leverage to seek a lopsided share. UCLA wants to be Ohio State. I wonder if they’ll end up more like Rutgers.” (link)

BYU AD Tom Holmoe shared a message with fans through the Royal Blue Collective emphasizing the importance of NIL: "It's a crucial time for BYU athletics with our transition into the Big 12, while simultaneously charting our course for the future amid the shifting landscape of college athletics. There are a lot of important factors and considerations for us to weigh. One crucial element for us to pay close attention to is the transfer portal. Our coaches have done a very good job in this ever-changing environment of mining the transfer portal for student athletes who are the right fit for BYU and will bolster our teams. Transfers have helped us become increasingly competitive in the Big 12. With the success that we're seeing, more portal athletes see BYU as a great place to continue their efforts to achieve their goals and dreams, both athletically and academically, at the college level. The Royal Blue is an essential asset to helping us appeal to these transfers by facilitating legal and compliant NIL opportunities and helping our athletes prepare for the future." (link)

JohnWallStreet examines the reasons behind a coup attempt within the MLBPA, noting the union has generally been perceived to be the strongest in professional sports. To wit, it’s the only major professional league without a salary cap. However, JWS points out that the “lack of a cap means the absence of a floor. And MLB clubs spent just $2.9B on free agents this past offseason, down from $3.9B last year. The situation, which can serve as a lesson for the players associations in college sports, illustrates the need to have seasoned business professionals as union leaders. The problem, JWS points out, is that the “former players and labor lawyers historically tasked with running these entities are often unqualified to maximize their commercial efficiency.” He points to the following example: “RedBird exited OneTeam at a $1.9B valuation in ’22. The MLBPA could have done the same, or sold a portion of its equity at the time. And might have–had leadership recognized the ongoing macro trends. … Borrowing against its lucrative stake and buying out RedBird, or forcing the private investment firm to retain its interest through the end of the lockup period (see: 2027) were among its other options. Instead, the union never hired a banker and relied on its board to evaluate the opportunity. The group settled on a preferred equity structure that included $250M of variable interest rate debt and $500M in preferred equity. Naturally, interest rates have since skyrocketed, and the mid-teen IRR guaranteed to OneTeam’s new investor consortium has become an anchor on a once fast-growing business. The decision likely cost the players hundreds of millions.” More. (link)

Missouri State accepts an invitation to join Conference USA as a full-league member, effective July 1, 2025. The school will become the 12th full-time member of the league, while the move will officially place Missouri State in the DI Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for the first time. AD Kyle Moats: “We are so excited for the opportunities that CUSA membership will bring to our university, our student-athletes, our coaches and our fans. This move represents a transition to a national brand and a platform that will help raise the profile of Missouri State University and the city of Springfield. The steps we have taken over the past 15 years to invest in a successful broad-based athletics program have prepared us for this long-awaited moment.” Missouri State “will compete in CUSA in the sports of football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s tennis, women’s track and field, and beach volleyball.” The Bears will continue on as part of the Missouri Valley Conference for the 2024-25 season while remaining eligible for regular-season and postseason championships. The West Coast Conference (WCC) approves the addition of Grand Canyon and Seattle as league members, effective July 1, 2025. WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson: “The WCC Presidents’ Council is deliberate in its effort to position the West Coast Conference as one of the premier NCAA Division I conferences in the nation, and the addition of Grand Canyon University and Seattle University bolsters the membership, enhances the profile of competitive excellence and expands the conference footprint into two major cities in the Western region. The WCC has a storied history of competitive prowess on the national level, and the addition … will further enrich the Conference’s national visibility..” The additions expand the WCC to 11 full-time members, the most in the 71-year history of the conference, while the two schools will compete in 14 of the league’s 16 sponsored sports beginning with the 2025-26 campaigns. Oregon State and Washington State have already agreed to join the WCC as affiliate members across 12 sports for two years, beginning with the 2024-25 academic year.” (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander looks at what’s next after the WCC’s additions of Grand Canyon and Seattle and one source says Grand Canyon’s addition “probably solidifies Gonzaga's retention for now as much as anything because they're going to end up getting at least two better games within the conference.” Norlander also notes that WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson “worked diligently with some WCC presidents who were previously on the fence or against GCU coming on due to its model. The big sell was how much upside GCU's basketball program was in making the WCC a better conference. The contingency, per a source, was to bring Seattle U in as a package deal. It's also two teams being added for the anticipated loss of Oregon State and Washington State in 2026.” One source tells him: "Presidents wanted to make sure they had two schools coming into the conference. With everything going on in the television world, that as much as anything is a factor. Now we're picking up one of the top markets, in Arizona, and picking up Seattle and the west side of Washington." (link)

A proposal to allow teams to employ unlimited football coaches appears to have the momentum to be approved by the DI Council next month, but The Athletic's Chris Vannini notes nothing is certain after it was rejected last year. Meanwhile, AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl asserts: “This is a hill the AFCA will die on.” As for what it could mean going forward, Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire says: “Man, I’m all for it. I have some really good young coaches that have come up through GA to QC or analyst and it’d be great for their growth and great for us to let them coach.” Cincinnati HC Scott Satterfield adds the current rules are nearly impossible to enforce anyway. “One compliance department is not allowing anybody outside the 10 to coach, but another doesn’t look at what they’re doing. The inconsistency is frustrating to the coaches doing it right.” Conversely Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield argues that “it’s going to create more unintended consequences. You’re going to see blueblood programs taking more coaches in the Group of 5. If you’re a MAC wide receivers coach making $80K and Michigan will pay you $150K to be on the field and you don’t have to go on the road recruiting, get to be with your family, a lot of guys are going to do it.” Moreover, Silverfield remarks that “staffs have grown, but there needs to be one voice in a room. You can’t have four guys coaching quarterbacks. At what point is it diminishing returns?” (link)

More from Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard, this time talking to reporters about the growing concentration of power between the SEC and Big Ten: “It’s those that have all the gold make the rules. So, if I was a member of the Big Ten or the SEC, I’d start looking over my shoulder and wondering when’s the day going to come when the top of the SEC is not going to want the bottom of the SEC? Go back and look at times when the AFL and the NFL merged they only needed one commissioner. And when the ABA and the NBA merged they only needed one commissioner. There's going to come a day when they don't need two $6M-a-year commissioners and they're going to eat their own. And if we think that's not going to happen, you’re a fool because we didn’t think the Pac-12 would get eaten and it did. And the CFP is just another example of our industry running amok. And they’re trying to swallow the ACC and the Big 12. And I wish them all the best because they’re going to eat their own.” (link)

Maryland AD Damon Evans comments on Women’s Basketball HC Brenda Frese’s work in the transfer portal this offseason, during which the Terps rebuilt the roster with seven new players. Evans says the “challenge was just identifying what was taking place out there. What was the market for, specifically, women’s basketball players? How many NIL dollars were they starting to get paid? … A year or so ago, the amount of money that women’s basketball players were getting…pales in comparison to what they’re getting today. So making sure that we understood how rapidly this thing was evolving and growing and making sure with Brenda that we’re able to identify, okay, how much money do we need to raise in this collective for you to meet the needs that you have? So that was really the big challenge. We went from zero to 100 so fast, but we were able to do it. And that allowed her to go out and get what I think is one of the best transfer portal classes in the country.” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft talks about plans for holding more concerts at Beaver Stadium, where country music singer Luke Combs performed last month. Kraft says that show did turn a profit, but The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder notes PSU never acknowledged whether a similar 2017 show with Blake Shelton was a moneymaker. Meanwhile, Kraft points out such events are great “showcase” moments for Penn State. “It’s what you can do in that building. Now, there’s only certain people that can do that. You can’t just throw anybody in there and make it work. … We have to generate revenue. When you have a building like we have and you can use it to your advantage to help not only create an experience but generate and create more revenue for everybody, that’s a good thing.” Kraft goes on to say the Nittany Lions will continue to pursue non-football opportunities for Beaver Stadium. “Everyone always talks about the hockey game and a preseason football game. If we can do it and pull it off — obviously you don’t do anything that you’ll lose money on, but you want to do something because it brings such a different energy. Everything is on the table. The good thing is since coming here and talking to people all across the country, there is a real appetite to do things in Beaver Stadium.” (link)

Three more former Northwestern football student-athletes, including former LB Nathan Fox and two men identified as John Doe, have filed lawsuits against the school and former HC Pat Fitzgerald alleging hazing and mistreatment within the program. One of the two unidentified student-athletes is the initial whistleblower, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, who notes that “both Fox and the whistleblower, identified as John Doe 22, spoke with attorney Maggie Hickey, whom Northwestern hired to investigate John Doe 22's allegations after they were first brought forward in late 2022.” In his suit, Fox says he reported his experiences to six Northwestern staff members, including a therapist in 2018 who had him sign an agreement allowing her to share his allegations with the athletic training staff. According to Fox, Fitzgerald consequently chastised him in a team meeting for complaining of unfair treatment. The suit also states another Northwestern psychologist, upon hearing of Fox's hazing allegations, told him they weren't real and stemmed from a diagnosis of bipolar disorder that Fox has never received. Fox said the psychologist prescribed him medication that led to him contemplating suicide. The plaintiffs are seeking damages in excess of $50K, per Rittenberg. (link)

Penn CEO Jay Snowden believes banning prop bets on college games would not materially reduce handle or revenue for the sportsbooks. Snowden says the volume of betting on college sports that Penn sees in states that don’t allow player props has remained similar to wagering on colleges in those states that allow them. “It’s a very small percentage of handle for college games. And then it’s even smaller, obviously, on the base of total wagers and total handle. So I would view it largely as a non-issue. I think people who are looking to bet player props for college are probably going to continue to make wagers. They may just make wagers on game outcomes or NFL props as opposed to college player props. So I wouldn’t overly read into that one.” (link)

The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch offers a glimpse behind the scenes of Full Court Press, ESPN’s upcoming documentary about the final women’s basketball seasons of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, South Carolina’s Kamilla Cordoso and UCLA’s Kiki Rice. Filmmaker Kristen Lappas, who helmed the project, tells Deitsch: “Generally speaking, when we see any content about female athletes, it’s usually very flowery, a little bit watered down, they’re polite, they don’t curse, everybody is friends and it’s very vanilla. That’s just not what it is. It’s intense and exciting, and women are (as) authentic and uncensored as the men. We hope that if people walk away with anything from this film, they realize that these women are just as intense and want it as bad as the men.” Producer Hannah Bier, who spent 28 days with Clark, says the former Iowa star would often propose her own ideas. “For instance, she suggested that we go film with her on Christmas Day with her family. That is one of the most intimate ways to spend time with someone because it’s when people want to turn off and not focus or think about work. She told us that her family was going to the (Kansas City) Chiefs game on Christmas and that was something important to her. That ultimately ended up making the film, and it was a great lead-off point for us to tell her family backstory.” More from Deitsch. (link)
