Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark acknowledges he’d like to see the College Football Playoff expand to 14 teams but wants to see the 12-team format play out for 2024. “My feeling is more access for student athletes is a great thing. Providing them with championship experiences is a wonderful thing. ... Hosting games on-campus is fantastic for all the right reasons. And if we ended up going to 14, and we can further enhance the championship experience for more teams and more student athletes, I think that's great.” Regarding the CFP’s financial distribution, Yormark tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “I'm a believer that if you create value, you need to be rewarded. That's just how I look at life. When you look at the first 10 years of the CFP, we didn't perform as well as we would have liked. That's OK. History might not repeat itself, and that's why we have the look-in [provision]. I made a point to get that in. ... For a lot of different reasons. I certainly wasn't happy with the distribution. I guess you could say in some respects, I was satisfied. It was fine, but certainly not happy about it.” On expanding March Madness, Yormark says: “The tournament is one of the greatest spectacles in sports…and you don't want to mess with something that's great. But if there's chances and opportunities to modify it a little bit, to make it provide more access, to amplify the experience, to look at it slightly differently, we owe it to ourselves to do that.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White was asked about where ADs stand on sharing revenue with student-athletes and whether the Big Ten and SEC are leading the way on the issue. White: "I think I figured I may get that question. I was thinking about that on the way here today. I liken it to, if I had a crack in my foundation at my house, I think it's unfortunate over the last couple decades just watching this thing play out. We've several times tried to put some spackle on the crack and maybe hope somebody else solves it in the future. We've got to stop doing that. And I hope that we really take a deep look and solve this thing with some real, structural issues. We obviously have some legal issues in college sports. There are real solutions, and we need to sprint to them as quickly as possible.” White also said the SEC is getting close to making long-term scheduling decisions for football, but “to be perfectly honest with you, we've got so many other bigger issues, I hadn't really thought about that one most recently. I know our fans would love to know. I'm excited in any iteration of this new football conference. Adding two (schools) is one thing, and they're two big-time brands. But just playing everyone more frequently by getting rid of the divisions and having much more diversity in the schedule.” More from White. (link)

Indiana AD Scott Dolson joins the Hoosier Hysterics podcast and talks about expectations for Football HC Curt Cignetti’s first season. Dolson says IU wants to put itself on the map in the new Big Ten, and “beyond that it's about how we play, it’s about our swagger, it's about the things that really, really good programs do. I want to see that, I want to feel it, and it's one of those things that sometimes in my position being behind the scenes you get a feel for things and sometimes the feel is different than what fans see. Sometimes it’s the same thing. And what I want is behind the scenes I want to feel that we're gaining that confidence.” Also from Dolson: “How can I lead this department to make sure that we stay relevant? We don't want to be on the outside looking in – and I think we're fine for now, I don't want to alarm anyone that we're on the cusp of being put out – but I think having a strong football program, a commitment to football is vital to being relevant in the Big Ten. And you can see that with the hiring of Coach Cig, with the investments as we studied other schools, the Investments in staff, the investments in facilities, the investment to make sure we put ourselves in the position to have success.” More from Dolson, including his expectations for men’s hoops. From Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Bowl Season director Nick Carparelli told @YahooSports in Phoenix that he expects NIL to soon come ‘in-house’ and for athletes to sign binding compensation contracts with schools that will require them to play in bowls and CFP games, eliminating or greatly reducing opt-outs.” (link)

More from Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “AFCA Board voted to propose changes to the recruiting calendar this week in Phoenix. July: completely dead; December: completely quiet; January: 1 additional contact week. Proposal expected to be reviewed - and potentially adopted - by FB Oversight Committee later this month.” (link)

Memphis Interim AD Jeff Crane says the Tigers have crossed the $20M fundraising threshold as they seeks to raise $50M to support renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Once the department reaches the $25M milestone, work on Phase 2 will begin as soon as possible. "We anticipate to raise the rest (of the $25M) by the end of this summer. We are still on track for completion of Phase 2 by the summer of 2026.” Crane also asserts the mission remains to get into a Power 4 conference. “We think more change is coming. It’s hard to predict what may come, but our goal has been and will continue to be to remain aggressive. We know with the work we’re doing, we’re putting the university in the best possible position.” Crane acknowledges he would like to have the job on a permanent basis, but “we have so much in front of us at the moment, I don’t want to get distracted by that. We’re in a time of change in college athletics and I want to keep our eye on the opportunities in front of us.” (link)

YoY, the Hokies’ revenue increased 14.9%, up from $112.7M, while expenses remained essentially flat, falling .3% from $117.3M. OnBalance Founder/CEO Walt Norley joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the value of using data to address student-athlete mental health concerns. Norley explains how his company is working with Miami (FL) to develop its Gen3 platform for measuring, managing and improving student-athlete mental health. Norley on the importance of data: “Foundationally, today we have a scoring program that will allow stronger communication between the stakeholders. The second piece is we bring everything into one place. We want to create management communications efficiencies so people can have their electronic library with NCAA, conference information, team policies, etc. … The foundation the company is putting business intelligence in through technology, which today is AI, that drives to trends and then predictions to improve the outcomes. And the outcomes really that we're driving to it's getting the athletes back in competition sooner. And in the case where they're not in the classroom because they're going through these mental behavioral challenges, we get them back in the classroom sooner and that's the overall objective.” Full interview on Connect. A potential settlement in the House case continues to breed uncertainty in athletic departments, as Baylor AD Mack Rhoades remarks: "At this point in time, there's a real lack of clarity. I don't expect, if there is a settlement, any potential guidelines on how each athletic department distributes those monies. Who receives it? All student-athletes? Just revenue-generating sports? Is everybody the same? My guess is it's not. How do we figure that out?" Another topic flailing in the wind involves Title IX implications, and Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) CEO Jason Belzer says: "It's very likely we're going to see non-revenue sports get massacred. Title IX is going to be a very big battle. How are you going to stop it? It's going to be tough." Meanwhile, UCF AD Terry Mohajir still maintains that “we're in the education business. This national narrative has been hijacked that it's these poor guys and girls are getting taken advantage of. Right now, as it is today, with Alston payments, cost of attendance payments and expenses and housing, our student-athletes live like $100K employees in our organization because they have no expenses and they don't pay taxes on any of the extra money they get from Alston payments, academic awards, the cost of attendance and medical expenses." Stephen F. Austin is “strongly considering a move back to the Southland Conference” and could potentially make an announcement to that effect as soon as this month, and Extra Points’ Matt Brown notes that “the exact whys are complicated, depending on who you talk to. Some industry sources have noted that [President Neal] Weaver was previously a VP for University Advancement at Nicholls State, and already has deep familiarity with many Southland institutions. Others have pointed to a desire to save money on travel, as well as instability and a lack of confidence in WAC/ASUN United and that organization’s long term future.” If SFA were to leave, Brown reports that “multiple WAC institutions will continue to do their due diligence on other conference membership options. Specifically, I’ve been told to monitor the Summit League as a potential destination for the Utah-based institutions, the WCC as a potential landing spot for Cal Baptist, and the ASUN or Southland as potential destinations for ACU, UTA and Tarleton, with the ASUN considered more likely than the Southland.” Also from Brown: “Industry sources close to WCC schools have told me multiple times over the last few months that while multiple member schools are strongly in favor of the conference adding Grand Canyon, the best basketball program in the league at the moment, it is unlikely that the Lopes can get enough votes from the entire conference to earn an invite. … I’m not ready to shovel dirt on any league. But I do think it’s fair to say that the WAC is in a very precarious position at the moment.” (link)

Southern Miss announces plans for a $35M renovation of Reed Green Coliseum. Golden Eagles AD Jeremy McClain: "Today signifies a huge step in our efforts to revitalize Reed Green Coliseum for the betterment of our basketball programs and our community. This renovation process will reshape the future of this facility, while allowing us to work to reach our full potential in an ever-changing college athletics environment. I am incredibly grateful for the City of Hattiesburg and everyone who has supported this project." Features of the upgrade will include a practice facility for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the addition of 200 premium loge seats, 625 premium sideline seats, a new arena club level with drink rails and casual seating, and updated concessions and restrooms. Take a peek at some video renderings. (link)

Temple announces plans to construct a new 52K-square foot on-campus tennis complex. The project includes seven new courts with bleacher seating and lighting to allow for more accessibility to academic classes and the general student population. Owls AD Arthur Johnson: "This new tennis complex will provide our student-athletes with a top-notch facility to showcase their talents while preparing to compete at a high level. The facility will also include bleacher seating and the technology required to video stream our matches on ESPN+, so fans around the world can watch Temple Tennis." (link)

Houston plans to keep wearing its “Luv Ya Blue” uniforms despite receiving a cease-and-desist from the NFL last year which asserted that UH’s “attempt to free ride on the popularity of the NFL and the club violates the intellectual property rights of the NFL and (Tennessee) Titans.” Cougars AD Chris Pezman is unmoved and tells the Houston Chronicle: “We’re doing it. We’ve reviewed everything and come to the conclusion that we are going to proceed.” Pezman argues that Columbia blue is part of the city’s heritage, noting the city's flag, which was adopted in 1915, uses a light blue color. “This isn’t a reach. This is a layup. We’ve got a very defensible position.” (link)

On3 has launched On3 HER, a new vertical focused on women’s sports that will be headlined by Talia Goodman. (link); In one of her first pieces for On3 HER, Goodman examines what women’s college hoops can do to capitalize on its current momentum and believes TV partners should consider putting more big games in primetime slots. USC HC Lindsay Gottlieb agrees and tells Goodman: “It’s continuing to put these young women on TV on major networks during major time slots. Caitlin’s phenomenal, right? She has this unique, captivating nature – the way that Steph [Curry] does…but she’s not the first, nor the only exciting player. We’ve had them for years, and so now to say, OK, this is a newfound set of eyeballs, let’s continue to put the marketing dollars in and the good time slots. Keep giving women’s basketball a chance and it will excel.” Goodman also believes increased media coverage, better accessibility and a steady pipeline of star power are necessary for the sport to continue its upward trajectory. Former Stanford HC Tara VanDerveer: “I think there’s going to be a lot of excitement with the new conference alignment. There’s going to be a lot of freshness to the stories because of different teams getting to know different competition. … I think it’s just getting more viewers, building and growing the game. It’s writing about great stories – people are interested in stories.” (link)

Oregon has sold around 11K new football season tickets this season, and JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher recalls his recent conversation with UO President Karl Scholz about plans to expand Autzen Stadium. Scholz: “We have to look carefully at that. Is that going to be a permanent phenomenon? In which case, we would have to think about expanding Autzen. Or is this, you know, the novelty of joining the Big Ten? Having Ohio State come in? And it falls off?” Canzano ponders whether a “large number of the new season tickets sold are Ohio State fans who plan to travel and see the Buckeyes’ game in Eugene on Oct. 12. Will those customers then dump the rest of the UO home games on the secondary market? Oregon knows the billing zip codes on those season ticket sales. I’ll ask [Ducks AD Rob] Mullens about it.” Meanwhile, Utah AD Mark Harlan tells Canzano the Utes’ football season ticket renewal rate is hovering around 97%. Not only have the Utes sold out their allotment for this season, there is a 3,000-person waiting list. (link)

Tennessee has sold out its allotment of 70,500 football season tickets for the second consecutive year and has built a ticket interest list of 15K. ESPN’s Pat McAfee reports Arizona Cardinals/former Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. has yet to join the NFLPA due to a conflict with Fanatics. McAfee says Harrison will join the NFLPA and that his dispute with Fanatics stems from his declining to sign a deal with the company as a sophomore at OSU. The deals Fanatics offered to sophomores with big names, McAfee explains, were for four years, meaning they would last a year or two into players’ potential NFL careers. Harrison declined, so the “holdup with the NFLPA deal is actually a holdup with the Fanatics operation that’s taking place. … What we have been told is the price of Marvin Harrison Jr. as a rookie and a second-year in the NFL is not the same as him as a sophomore in college. And there's a lot of people that sign that deal, and this will hopefully get worked out. McAfee adds that some student-athletes who have signed these and similar deals are “having remorse,” which “takes us back to the NIL thing where we need people regulating, monitoring the contracts that are being signed…and anytime you hear somebody say there needs to be guardrails on this, the first reaction from agents and players and families is, ‘Oh, you don't want these guys to make any money. You want the schools to make money.’ It’s like no, I don't want these guys to sign terrible deals that lock them into a four-year deal when their worth might be 6x that as opposed to what it was when they initially signed the deal. So, I think this is a great depiction of what’s going on in NIL right now, what could happen and hopefully it will be an example of what we could all learn from.” McAfee goes on to suggest that deals like this should include opt-out clauses or escalators for players who transition from college to the NFL, and since this is happening with such a high-profile player, “maybe we’ll be able to figure some s–t for the future.” (link, link)

The DEA will move to classify marijuana as a Schedule III controlled substance, removing it from a list that includes heroin, bath salts and ecstasy and rescheduling it alongside prescription drugs such as ketamine and Tylenol with codeine. The proposal, which still must be reviewed by the Biden administration, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, the proposal stops short of legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Former DEA Deputy Administrator Jack Riley says he has concerns about the proposed change because he thinks marijuana remains a possible “gateway drug,” but “in terms of us getting clear to use our resources to combat other major drugs, that’s a positive.” Riley notes that fentanyl alone accounts for more than 100K deaths in the U.S. per year.
