West Virginia AD Wren Baker inks a two-year extension through December 2030, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes: “WVU officials have been with pleased with how he’s navigated the school through the end of the Bob Huggins era and the positioning of the football program in the wake of a promising nine-win season.” (link)

CollegeAD breaks down Green Bay AD Josh Moon’s contract extension, which runs through June 30, 2029, and increases his base salary from $180K to $205K. Moon will also earn $30K in annualized additional compensation through the UW-Green Bay Foundation. First Four or first-round men’s and women’s hoops wins will result in $5K bonuses for Moon. That figure increases to $10K for reaching the Sweet 16, $15K for making the Elite Eight, $30K for making the Final Four, $50K for advancing to the finals and $100K for winning the national championship. Moon will receive $4K for regular season hoops titles by either program and $7,500 for conference tournament championships. Additionally, Moon can earn a $5K bonus if the department raises $1M, and that sum can incrementally increase to $30K if $5M is raised. Should Green Bay terminate the contract without cause, Moon would be owed the remainder of his base pay. (link)

University of California President Michael Drake has proposed that UCLA “contribute” $10M per year to Cal through the 2029-30 academic year as a result of conference realignment. From a UC Board of Regents meeting summary: “While universities and colleges are still in tumultuous times with an unsettled landscape in college athletics, there is some clarity on projected media rights revenues in the near term. It is anticipated that there will be an approximately $50 million difference between UCLA’s Big Ten contract and UC Berkeley’s agreement with the ACC. As a result, the President is proposing that UCLA contribute $10 million a year to UC Berkeley, the top end of the range established by the Regents in December 2022.” The summary goes on to include the following recommendation: “That the Regents authorize the transfer of $10M a year from UCLA to the Berkeley campus from 2024-25 through 2029-30, the term of UCLA’s existing Big Ten Conference contract. In the event that there is a significant change in revenues and/or expenses for either campus, exceeding ten percent over 2024-25 pro forma assumptions, UCLA’s contribution commitment will return to the Regents for further evaluation and potential action.” The board is expected to vote on the matter during its May 14 meeting. Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard says plans for a new wrestling facility are on hold and explains there is “just no way possible to go forward and convince the state that we can take bonds out to pay for a wrestling facility when the College Football Playoff decided to take all the money and give it to the Big 10 and SEC. With this (House) lawsuit getting ready to be settled you just can’t go forward with projects like that. That’s the same reason we didn’t go forward with Hilton (Coliseum). You just can’t bond for them.” Pollard went on to note that Cyclones Wrestling HC Kevin Dresser understood the decision. “He recognizes that is where the world has moved to. The world has moved away and said we need to pay the athletes. The athletes will be just fine. We got fourth in the country in the current facility. Would it have been nice to have that facility? Absolutely because I think it’s a facility you need 20 years from now but I think we’ll be just fine without it.” (link)

Speaking at a Big Orange Caravan event this week, Tennessee AD Danny White discussed balancing fundraising priorities between facilities and preparing for changes in the industry, such as student-athlete employment. “I think you probably do (look at it differently than in the past). We had some catching up to do in the facility area, and our two biggest projects really have nothing to do with recruiting or the student-athlete experience. They have an enormous amount to do with the fan experience. We have the best fanbase in sports, but we can’t take them for granted. There’s areas of Neyland Stadium that needed to be addressed, and our baseball stadium situation needed to be addressed. So I don’t care what the environment looks like and the rules of engagement in terms of NIL or all those things from an operational revenue, expense-decision standpoint – we have to get our fan-experience right and we’re in the middle of doing it.” White was also asked about LSU Football HC Brian Kelly’s recent comments about “buying players” and acknowledged that it shouldn’t all be about money. “But if we’re offering NIL packages and that’s a part of the equation, any one of us in our professional life would never take a job without knowing what the details of that compensation package looks like. So is it a part of their decision? It has to be. It is for every other American in any other walk of life.” (link)

Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari says he really only wants eight or nine scholarship players on the roster, telling former Oregon State MBB HC Craig Robinson: “They’re leaving anyway. And why would I develop a kid for someone else? … We have some walk-ons, we have some GAs, we have eight or nine guys and that’s it. And there is a tenth guy, he knows he’s the tenth guy.” Baldwin Wallace College of Education and Health Sciences Dean Steve Dittmore: “This is fascinating and makes a lot of sense. Less frivolous scholarship spending only to possibly lose player in portal. Fewer players competing for NIL $. Guessing most D1 fully fund BKB scholarships. So many NCAA caps, like 13 BKB scholarships, seem arbitrary.” (link)

It looks like Netflix will carry two NFL Christmas Day games this year, but Puck’s John Ourand notes this deal, if/when it comes to fruition, “would not herald a headlong thrust into live sports, but instead be a continuation of [Netflix’s] current dabbling strategy.” Ourand adds: “The NFL’s strategy has typically focused on trying to get new outlets to become addicted to its games. The NFL is not wrong in its belief that it helped grow ESPN, Fox Sports, and DirecTV into three of the country’s biggest media companies. It’s following the same blueprint with Amazon, YouTube TV, and now Netflix. The NFL also likes the idea of potentially adding another bidder as a way to keep its linear TV rights fees high.” From Netflix’s side, Ourand points out there are still more questions than answers, “from who will produce the games to how much it will pay. For comparison’s sake, Amazon paid $100M for the exclusive rights to that unwatchable Jets-Dolphins Black Friday rain-out contest. Would Netflix pay double for a package of two games, and the chance to own Christmas Day? More? Meanwhile, every other league executive is licking their lips, hoping that the NFL turns Netflix’s dabbling strategy into a true gateway drug.” (link)

According to a new report from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources and the National Association of Student Financial Aid Advisors (NASFAA), more than half of all financial aid professionals are likely to seek employment in a new sector within the next year. The most common reason for those wanting to change jobs was “pay and workforce flexibility,” and NASFAA President Justin Draeger says: “If we’ve learned anything from this last year, it’s just how critical financial aid administrators are to ensuring students can access postsecondary education. It’s equally vital they are recognized and fairly compensated for that work.” Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox notes the report comes after a “grueling year” for financial aid officers who have borne the brunt of disastrous FAFSA rollout, but “burnout has been on the rise in the financial aid community for years now, and colleges have been struggling to overcome staffing shortages because of it.” (link)

The NCAA has approved a blanket waiver to allow schools an unlimited number of official visits in men’s and women’s basketball, effective immediately. The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach: “Previously, schools were capped on the number of official visits they could host. The blanket waiver is expected to alleviate that amid greater movement in the transfer portal, with fewer restrictions to player movement than ever before. … The blanket waiver may turn into legislation if two pending legislative proposals are adopted by the Division I Council in June.” (link)

Power conference leaders are considering reducing the size of football rosters as part of a new student-athlete compensation model, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes rosters could shrink from 115+ to as few as 85-95 players, roughly aligning with the current scholarship limit. As such, the future of walk-on student-athletes could be in jeopardy. Dellenger reports settlement negotiations in the House case that are being socialized includes new roster limitations but would remove scholarship restrictions, thereby allowing schools to award scholarships to every player on a given roster. “The move is rooted in legalities. Permitting scholarship expansion is a way to avoid future antitrust lawsuits related to athlete restrictions. It also affords schools more freedom to strike a balance with the federal Title IX law requiring equal benefits to women and men athletes. Setting football roster limits is also an effort to both (1) reduce expenses amid the rising costs of athlete revenue sharing and (2) instill a cost-containment concept to limit a school’s scholarship distribution.” Administrators from the Big 12, ACC and SEC tell Dellenger they’re budgeting $8-10M for increased scholarship costs. Also from Dellenger: “In positive news for administrators, a portion of the additional scholarship expense – perhaps as much as $3 million – may be counted toward the revenue-sharing cap. However, one administrator asks: “Do you want your cap high or do you want it lower?” That answer is likely determined based on a school’s resource level. More from Dellenger. (link)

The Chronicle of HIgher Education’s Nell Gluckman examines the behind-the-scenes work that has multiplied for academic, compliance and other staff members as student-athletes transfer more freely. Old Dominion Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations & Student-Athlete Welfare Ron Moses says of this new mountain of work: “The transfer rules changed. Academic rules never change.” Not only do staffers have to dig into syllabi from other universities to see if credits will transfer, they also have to determine whether rising juniors and seniors will be able to keep their majors. For example, Moses recently had to figure out whether a class on the history of the state from which one athlete was transferring would count toward a history requirement. Since the state was not Virginia, it would not. Business schools and STEM majors in particular can be tricky to navigate because, as Moses explains: “Business schools don’t like taking other business-school credits. That makes it hard to stay on track.” Gluckman: “This new reality means academic advisers need to be in regular communication with the registrar, the office of admissions, the compliance department, and various deans, in addition to the coaches. The staff members in those offices are a key part of making athlete transfers happen.” Illinois Assoc. AD for Academic Services Stephon Fuqua: “It’s critical I’m continuing to build great relationships with those folks.” Fuqua says part of his job is communicating clearly with all parties exactly what the requirements are. “This is the reality of our world right now and here’s what we’re asking.” More from Gluckman. The Patriot League or Southern Conference could be potential football-only landing spots for Richmond should the Spiders decide to leave the CAA Football Conference, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor. Asked about Richmond’s status on Thursday, CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio replied: “What decisions schools might be making for their own interests, those are questions you’d have to ask those schools. We’re going to continue to make decisions as a conference that are in the best interest of the conference to move the conference forward in creating both a sustainable and a competitive model, just as we’ve been making decisions over the last eight years since I’ve been commissioner.” Meanwhile, UR’s intentions remain opaque, according to O’Connor, who notes Spiders AD John Hardt has “publicly kept his own counsel” since remarking in December about the Spiders’ relationship with CAA Football: “To say that it's business as usual would not be an accurate statement right now. These days in college athletics, institutions really must be prepared for, and embrace, change. That's just the reality of (current) intercollegiate athletics at the DI level.” (link)

Memphis’ ticket sales declined in FY23, according to the Commercial Appeal’s Jonah Dylan, who notes the Tigers brought in $8.794M in in ticketing revenue. That’s down from $10.25M the previous year. Ticket sales for both football and men's basketball declined, with football going from $5.4M to $4.4M and MBB dropping from $4.6M to $4.1M. Expenses for the MBB program declined by nearly $4M after the buyout for former HC Tubby Smith went off the books. Meanwhile, football expenses increased roughly $2M YoY. On the attendance front, football averaged 26,195 fans in 2022 and increased to 29,782 in 2023. Also from Dylan: “Team travel also rose from $5.1M in fiscal year 2022 to $6.5M in fiscal year 2023. Royalties and sponsorship rose slightly from 2022 but were up considerably from pre-pandemic numbers. The department generated $3.4M in 2019, the last year before the pandemic, but generated $5.7M in 2023. … Ticket sales from women's basketball more than doubled from fiscal year 2022 to fiscal year 2023, going from $16,185 to $39,931.” (link)

James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes that “for those schools exploring NIL payments to athletes (direct or indirect thru collectives) for promotion of the University's brand, we confirmed with the NCAA that these expenses should be included in category 31 – fundraising, marketing and promotion.” OSKR‘s Andy Schwarz notes that those expenses not being categorized as “financial assistance” is “actually kind of a big deal” and could have “fascinating” Title IX implications. Davis notes Alston payments are also not categorized as athletic student aid. “I'm only sharing this for purposes of consistency in the member financial reporting system. Obviously there's a lot more that goes into Title IX.” (link)

In remarks at the AP Sports Editors Commissioners Conference this week, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said: "We only have so much control” over sports betting. "For example, the NCAA has made the point about the risk to college players. There's a large pool of players in college whose careers will end after they participate in college athletics, so there's not as much at stake. There's clearly a lot more at stake for a superstar player than there is for a two-way player. So it goes to the kinds of players those bets can be placed on, and then the types of bets as well. Certainly, prop bets, depending on how precise they are, lend themselves to more shenanigans than other kind of bets. Now, some of that can be captured through various monitoring, but we also recognize that a large amount of the handle – I'm not sure the precise percentage – but my hunch is there's still far more illegal [betting] than legal.” Silver also noted the NBA has a measure of control with sportsbooks, with whom the league has marketing partnerships, that it doesn’t have with those with whom they have no relationship. In the latter case, Silver points out that “we're relying on them doing a broader based concern about integrity in the industry and them not running afoul of the regulators." (link)
