Missouri State accepts an invitation to join Conference USA as a full-league member, effective July 1, 2025. The school will become the 12th full-time member of the league, while the move will officially place Missouri State in the DI Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for the first time. AD Kyle Moats: “We are so excited for the opportunities that CUSA membership will bring to our university, our student-athletes, our coaches and our fans. This move represents a transition to a national brand and a platform that will help raise the profile of Missouri State University and the city of Springfield. The steps we have taken over the past 15 years to invest in a successful broad-based athletics program have prepared us for this long-awaited moment.” Missouri State “will compete in CUSA in the sports of football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s tennis, women’s track and field, and beach volleyball.” The Bears will continue on as part of the Missouri Valley Conference for the 2024-25 season while remaining eligible for regular-season and postseason championships. The West Coast Conference (WCC) approves the addition of Grand Canyon and Seattle as league members, effective July 1, 2025. WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson: “The WCC Presidents’ Council is deliberate in its effort to position the West Coast Conference as one of the premier NCAA Division I conferences in the nation, and the addition of Grand Canyon University and Seattle University bolsters the membership, enhances the profile of competitive excellence and expands the conference footprint into two major cities in the Western region. The WCC has a storied history of competitive prowess on the national level, and the addition … will further enrich the Conference’s national visibility..” The additions expand the WCC to 11 full-time members, the most in the 71-year history of the conference, while the two schools will compete in 14 of the league’s 16 sponsored sports beginning with the 2025-26 campaigns. Oregon State and Washington State have already agreed to join the WCC as affiliate members across 12 sports for two years, beginning with the 2024-25 academic year.” (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander looks at what’s next after the WCC’s additions of Grand Canyon and Seattle and one source says Grand Canyon’s addition “probably solidifies Gonzaga's retention for now as much as anything because they're going to end up getting at least two better games within the conference.” Norlander also notes that WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson “worked diligently with some WCC presidents who were previously on the fence or against GCU coming on due to its for-profit model. The big sell was how much upside GCU's basketball program was in making the WCC a better conference. The contingency, per a source, was to bring Seattle U in as a package deal. It's also two teams being added for the anticipated loss of Oregon State and Washington State in 2026.” One source tells him: "Presidents wanted to make sure they had two schools coming into the conference. With everything going on in the television world, that as much as anything is a factor. Now we're picking up one of the top markets, in Arizona, and picking up Seattle and the west side of Washington." (link)

A proposal to allow teams to employ unlimited football coaches appears to have the momentum to be approved by the DI Council next month, but The Athletic's Chris Vannini notes nothing is certain after it was rejected last year. Meanwhile, AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl asserts: “This is a hill the AFCA will die on.” As for what it could mean going forward, Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire says: “Man, I’m all for it. I have some really good young coaches that have come up through GA to QC or analyst and it’d be great for their growth and great for us to let them coach.” Cincinnati HC Scott Satterfield adds the current rules are nearly impossible to enforce anyway. “One compliance department is not allowing anybody outside the 10 to coach, but another doesn’t look at what they’re doing. The inconsistency is frustrating to the coaches doing it right.” Conversely Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield argues that “it’s going to create more unintended consequences. You’re going to see blueblood programs taking more coaches in the Group of 5. If you’re a MAC wide receivers coach making $80K and Michigan will pay you $150K to be on the field and you don’t have to go on the road recruiting, get to be with your family, a lot of guys are going to do it.” Moreover, Silverfield remarks that “staffs have grown, but there needs to be one voice in a room. You can’t have four guys coaching quarterbacks. At what point is it diminishing returns?” (link)

More from Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard, this time talking to reporters about the growing concentration of power between the SEC and Big Ten: “It’s those that have all the gold make the rules. So, if I was a member of the Big Ten or the SEC, I’d start looking over my shoulder and wondering when’s the day going to come when the top of the SEC is not going to want the bottom of the SEC? Go back and look at times when the AFL and the NFL merged they only needed one commissioner. And when the ABA and the NBA merged they only needed one commissioner. There's going to come a day when they don't need two $6M-a-year commissioners and they're going to eat their own. And if we think that's not going to happen, you’re a fool because we didn’t think the Pac-12 would get eaten and it did. And the CFP is just another example of our industry running amok. And they’re trying to swallow the ACC and the Big 12. And I wish them all the best because they’re going to eat their own.” (link)

Maryland AD Damon Evans comments on Women’s Basketball HC Brenda Frese’s work in the transfer portal this offseason, during which the Terps rebuilt the roster with seven new players. Evans says the “challenge was just identifying what was taking place out there. What was the market for, specifically, women’s basketball players? How many NIL dollars were they starting to get paid? … A year or so ago, the amount of money that women’s basketball players were getting…pales in comparison to what they’re getting today. So making sure that we understood how rapidly this thing was evolving and growing and making sure with Brenda that we’re able to identify, okay, how much money do we need to raise in this collective for you to meet the needs that you have? So that was really the big challenge. We went from zero to 100 so fast, but we were able to do it. And that allowed her to go out and get what I think is one of the best transfer portal classes in the country.” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft talks about plans for holding more concerts at Beaver Stadium, where country music singer Luke Combs performed last month. Kraft says that show did turn a profit, but The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder notes PSU never acknowledged whether a similar 2017 show with Blake Shelton was a moneymaker. Meanwhile, Kraft points out such events are great “showcase” moments for Penn State. “It’s what you can do in that building. Now, there’s only certain people that can do that. You can’t just throw anybody in there and make it work. … We have to generate revenue. When you have a building like we have and you can use it to your advantage to help not only create an experience but generate and create more revenue for everybody, that’s a good thing.” Kraft goes on to say the Nittany Lions will continue to pursue non-football opportunities for Beaver Stadium. “Everyone always talks about the hockey game and a preseason football game. If we can do it and pull it off — obviously you don’t do anything that you’ll lose money on, but you want to do something because it brings such a different energy. Everything is on the table. The good thing is since coming here and talking to people all across the country, there is a real appetite to do things in Beaver Stadium.” (link)

Three more former Northwestern football student-athletes, including former LB Nathan Fox and two men identified as John Doe, have filed lawsuits against the school and former HC Pat Fitzgerald alleging hazing and mistreatment within the program. One of the two unidentified student-athletes is the initial whistleblower, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, who notes that “both Fox and the whistleblower, identified as John Doe 22, spoke with attorney Maggie Hickey, whom Northwestern hired to investigate John Doe 22's allegations after they were first brought forward in late 2022.” In his suit, Fox says he reported his experiences to six Northwestern staff members, including a therapist in 2018 who had him sign an agreement allowing her to share his allegations with the athletic training staff. According to Fox, Fitzgerald consequently chastised him in a team meeting for complaining of unfair treatment. The suit also states another Northwestern psychologist, upon hearing of Fox's hazing allegations, told him they weren't real and stemmed from a diagnosis of bipolar disorder that Fox has never received. Fox said the psychologist prescribed him medication that led to him contemplating suicide. The plaintiffs are seeking damages in excess of $50K, per Rittenberg. (link)

Penn CEO Jay Snowden believes banning prop bets on college games would not materially reduce handle or revenue for the sportsbooks. Snowden says the volume of betting on college sports that Penn sees in states that don’t allow player props has remained similar to wagering on colleges in those states that allow them. “It’s a very small percentage of handle for college games. And then it’s even smaller, obviously, on the base of total wagers and total handle. So I would view it largely as a non-issue. I think people who are looking to bet player props for college are probably going to continue to make wagers. They may just make wagers on game outcomes or NFL props as opposed to college player props. So I wouldn’t overly read into that one.” (link)

The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch offers a glimpse behind the scenes of Full Court Press, ESPN’s upcoming documentary about the final women’s basketball seasons of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, South Carolina’s Kamilla Cordoso and UCLA’s Kiki Rice. Filmmaker Kristen Lappas, who helmed the project, tells Deitsch: “Generally speaking, when we see any content about female athletes, it’s usually very flowery, a little bit watered down, they’re polite, they don’t curse, everybody is friends and it’s very vanilla. That’s just not what it is. It’s intense and exciting, and women are (as) authentic and uncensored as the men. We hope that if people walk away with anything from this film, they realize that these women are just as intense and want it as bad as the men.” Producer Hannah Bier, who spent 28 days with Clark, says the former Iowa star would often propose her own ideas. “For instance, she suggested that we go film with her on Christmas Day with her family. That is one of the most intimate ways to spend time with someone because it’s when people want to turn off and not focus or think about work. She told us that her family was going to the (Kansas City) Chiefs game on Christmas and that was something important to her. That ultimately ended up making the film, and it was a great lead-off point for us to tell her family backstory.” More from Deitsch. (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker inks a two-year extension through December 2030, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes: “WVU officials have been with pleased with how he’s navigated the school through the end of the Bob Huggins era and the positioning of the football program in the wake of a promising nine-win season.” (link)

CollegeAD breaks down Green Bay AD Josh Moon’s contract extension, which runs through June 30, 2029, and increases his base salary from $180K to $205K. Moon will also earn $30K in annualized additional compensation through the UW-Green Bay Foundation. First Four or first-round men’s and women’s hoops wins will result in $5K bonuses for Moon. That figure increases to $10K for reaching the Sweet 16, $15K for making the Elite Eight, $30K for making the Final Four, $50K for advancing to the finals and $100K for winning the national championship. Moon will receive $4K for regular season hoops titles by either program and $7,500 for conference tournament championships. Additionally, Moon can earn a $5K bonus if the department raises $1M, and that sum can incrementally increase to $30K if $5M is raised. Should Green Bay terminate the contract without cause, Moon would be owed the remainder of his base pay. (link)

University of California President Michael Drake has proposed that UCLA “contribute” $10M per year to Cal through the 2029-30 academic year as a result of conference realignment. From a UC Board of Regents meeting summary: “While universities and colleges are still in tumultuous times with an unsettled landscape in college athletics, there is some clarity on projected media rights revenues in the near term. It is anticipated that there will be an approximately $50 million difference between UCLA’s Big Ten contract and UC Berkeley’s agreement with the ACC. As a result, the President is proposing that UCLA contribute $10 million a year to UC Berkeley, the top end of the range established by the Regents in December 2022.” The summary goes on to include the following recommendation: “That the Regents authorize the transfer of $10M a year from UCLA to the Berkeley campus from 2024-25 through 2029-30, the term of UCLA’s existing Big Ten Conference contract. In the event that there is a significant change in revenues and/or expenses for either campus, exceeding ten percent over 2024-25 pro forma assumptions, UCLA’s contribution commitment will return to the Regents for further evaluation and potential action.” The board is expected to vote on the matter during its May 14 meeting. Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard says plans for a new wrestling facility are on hold and explains there is “just no way possible to go forward and convince the state that we can take bonds out to pay for a wrestling facility when the College Football Playoff decided to take all the money and give it to the Big 10 and SEC. With this (House) lawsuit getting ready to be settled you just can’t go forward with projects like that. That’s the same reason we didn’t go forward with Hilton (Coliseum). You just can’t bond for them.” Pollard went on to note that Cyclones Wrestling HC Kevin Dresser understood the decision. “He recognizes that is where the world has moved to. The world has moved away and said we need to pay the athletes. The athletes will be just fine. We got fourth in the country in the current facility. Would it have been nice to have that facility? Absolutely because I think it’s a facility you need 20 years from now but I think we’ll be just fine without it.” (link)

Speaking at a Big Orange Caravan event this week, Tennessee AD Danny White discussed balancing fundraising priorities between facilities and preparing for changes in the industry, such as student-athlete employment. “I think you probably do (look at it differently than in the past). We had some catching up to do in the facility area, and our two biggest projects really have nothing to do with recruiting or the student-athlete experience. They have an enormous amount to do with the fan experience. We have the best fanbase in sports, but we can’t take them for granted. There’s areas of Neyland Stadium that needed to be addressed, and our baseball stadium situation needed to be addressed. So I don’t care what the environment looks like and the rules of engagement in terms of NIL or all those things from an operational revenue, expense-decision standpoint – we have to get our fan-experience right and we’re in the middle of doing it.” White was also asked about LSU Football HC Brian Kelly’s recent comments about “buying players” and acknowledged that it shouldn’t all be about money. “But if we’re offering NIL packages and that’s a part of the equation, any one of us in our professional life would never take a job without knowing what the details of that compensation package looks like. So is it a part of their decision? It has to be. It is for every other American in any other walk of life.” (link)

Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari says he really only wants eight or nine scholarship players on the roster, telling former Oregon State MBB HC Craig Robinson: “They’re leaving anyway. And why would I develop a kid for someone else? … We have some walk-ons, we have some GAs, we have eight or nine guys and that’s it. And there is a tenth guy, he knows he’s the tenth guy.” Baldwin Wallace College of Education and Health Sciences Dean Steve Dittmore: “This is fascinating and makes a lot of sense. Less frivolous scholarship spending only to possibly lose player in portal. Fewer players competing for NIL $. Guessing most D1 fully fund BKB scholarships. So many NCAA caps, like 13 BKB scholarships, seem arbitrary.” (link)

It looks like Netflix will carry two NFL Christmas Day games this year, but Puck’s John Ourand notes this deal, if/when it comes to fruition, “would not herald a headlong thrust into live sports, but instead be a continuation of [Netflix’s] current dabbling strategy.” Ourand adds: “The NFL’s strategy has typically focused on trying to get new outlets to become addicted to its games. The NFL is not wrong in its belief that it helped grow ESPN, Fox Sports, and DirecTV into three of the country’s biggest media companies. It’s following the same blueprint with Amazon, YouTube TV, and now Netflix. The NFL also likes the idea of potentially adding another bidder as a way to keep its linear TV rights fees high.” From Netflix’s side, Ourand points out there are still more questions than answers, “from who will produce the games to how much it will pay. For comparison’s sake, Amazon paid $100M for the exclusive rights to that unwatchable Jets-Dolphins Black Friday rain-out contest. Would Netflix pay double for a package of two games, and the chance to own Christmas Day? More? Meanwhile, every other league executive is licking their lips, hoping that the NFL turns Netflix’s dabbling strategy into a true gateway drug.” (link)

According to a new report from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources and the National Association of Student Financial Aid Advisors (NASFAA), more than half of all financial aid professionals are likely to seek employment in a new sector within the next year. The most common reason for those wanting to change jobs was “pay and workforce flexibility,” and NASFAA President Justin Draeger says: “If we’ve learned anything from this last year, it’s just how critical financial aid administrators are to ensuring students can access postsecondary education. It’s equally vital they are recognized and fairly compensated for that work.” Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox notes the report comes after a “grueling year” for financial aid officers who have borne the brunt of disastrous FAFSA rollout, but “burnout has been on the rise in the financial aid community for years now, and colleges have been struggling to overcome staffing shortages because of it.” (link)
