Arizona State is expected to promote Executive Senior Assoc. AD/CBO Graham Rossini to AD. Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman: “Industry insiders, including search firms, agents, and athletic directors at other schools, were asked by Sun Devil Source whether they'd heard if ASU had conducted an external search for the job. None of those people contacted said they had heard of ASU seriously vetting or interviewing any other candidates.” (link); DevilsDigest.com reports ASU coaches were told this week that Rossini will be promoted to AD. “This is a move that has been in the works for months and is now poised to take place in the very near future.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger has obtained a document detailing the proposed House settlement and notes the NCAA and power conferences are looking at being on the hook for upwards of $20B in damages should they lose the case at trial. Dellenger notes the “settlement, believed to be in the final stages of adoption, consists of three main concepts: billions in back damages; a new compensation model permitting schools to share as much as $22M annually with athletes in a capped system; and an overhaul of the NCAA scholarship and roster structure.” He also reports the total figure that would be owed to the affected class in back damages is $2.776B, which the NCAA would pay over a 10-year period. Meanwhile, according to the document, estimated $20B in damages would likely be payable “immediately” after final judgment and “not over 10 years.” Additionally, the court is “expected to reaffirm the NCAA’s remaining rules around compensation, ‘including the prohibition on booster payments if they are not true NIL.’” The settlement also includes the development of a new “enforcement infrastructure,” and Dellenger reports the “plaintiffs will agree to cooperate with the NCAA’s years-long congressional lobbying effort ‘regarding antitrust exemption,’” according to the document. Left open is the possibility of athletes being deemed employees, as the agreement permits an adjustment “to an employment model with collective bargaining.” Also notable is the inclusion of what the document calls a “release” of antitrust compensation claims from current, former and future athletes for 10 years as part of a “substitution” system for new plaintiffs. Not included is protection from future lawsuits brought by state attorneys general, the preemption of state NIL or revenue-sharing laws and any “real ruling” on Title IX’s application. More from Dellenger. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann reacts: “Threatening bankruptcy if settlement talks fail. Talking about ‘true NIL’ as if that means something. Suggesting it can tell a judge what to do in a settlement. To my sports law students: Great news, there will be no shortage of NCAA problems to write about for years to come! … I'm not sure where, how or when $4B morphed into $20B. I bet it goes to $50B in the next week or two. These numbers make so many assumptions (most of which are not transparent, either) and there's so little critique of them in media.” (link)

Florida State AD Michael Alford was asked whether FSU’s relationship with the ACC can be reconciled after the two sides’ legal dispute and said: "We'll just wait for that to play out. We have great partners in this conference, great relationships, but at the end of the day, we've got to do what's best for Florida State and look at the changing environment of collegiate athletics and make sure we're there to be successful." Alford also insists the ACC Spring Meetings have not been tense: “We have and the conference has, you see the professionalism they have. Jim and I, of course, people in this conference are dear friends for many years. So we've always had that professional relationship, and it's continued. There's no ill will inside of the room or anything like that. Any discussions, it's 100% professional and we talked about issues that are going on." On whether there’s a way to make it work with the ACC: “We continue to look at everything. … Now that's looking at different performance models, business models, everything you could possibly look at. If y'all been in my office, you've seen it, I mean, I've got notebooks on everything. Because we're constantly looking at, well, if this decision comes this way in decision trees, what are we going to do? And that's constantly being looked at globally." Check out everything Alford said with the media during the spring meeting. (link)

The University of California Board of Regents has officially directed UCLA to pay Cal $10M a year to compensate the Bears for revenue lost because of UCLA’s move into the Big Ten; however, the board shortened the duration of those payments from six years to three beginning with the 2024-25 academic year. In the summer of 2027, the regents will revisit the issue. According to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, regent Keith Ellis voiced his “strong reservations because of the precedent it sets where we take from one campus and give to another.” Additionally, regent Richard Sherman suggested that the payment timeframe be reduced to one year, but Board Chair Richard Leib countered by noting that the disparity in revenue between the UCLA and Cal athletic departments “has gotten a lot worse” since December 2022, when the board first approved a contribution ranging from $2M to $10M. Newly named Northern Iowa AD Megan Franklin during her introductory press conference described her vision for the athletic department in what she coined the “legacy era.” Franklin: “President Nook already talked about the facilities — they are legacy buildings that will be built and renovations to be done. I know in the vision of the (UNI) Dome when it was built they knew that building would last longer than those that were imagining it then and we are doing the same with the court sport practice facility and the wrestling (practice) facility and getting that Dome renovation project done — and that will be done while we’re working together.” While her background isn’t steeped in fundraising, Franklin pointed to several current fundraising initiatives as examples of how UNI can reach a wide array of donors. “It’s exciting and it also offers opportunities for engagement, again, thinking through the legacy pieces of different interests people have and when they want to give. And that’s nice, they have a full menu for sure these days (to donate to).” (link)

Auburn AD John Cohen talks about his decision to sign a contract extension and says he and his wife talked about retiring in Auburn long before the Tigers AD opportunity opened up. “The Gulf of Mexico is three-and-a-half hours away. It’s an easy drive. It’s a great town. It’s a great golfing community. They have a remarkable public school system, even when our kids are grown. It has always just stuck out to me as a wonderful place. … I don’t want to live anywhere else.” He adds: “I feel extremely privileged to be a part of Auburn. Very grateful for the embrace that I’ve gotten from all the stakeholders involved. And you know, we have a lot of work to do, fully aware of that, but excited about the direction.” (link)

The Athletic’s Kennington Smith III examines Alabama’s football NIL situation now that the so-called “Saban discount” is no longer available. A&P Sports Agency Co-Founder Jacob Piasecki: “I think (Saban’s) whole view on it was you’re coming to Alabama to win and play with the best of the best. That’s why people went to Alabama, even to this day. I have guys who would get a lot bigger NIL deals elsewhere, but they decided to stay at Alabama because of what Saban built. I mean, you’re playing at a level where very few schools can compete. I think that’s what they relied on heavily. Now that they have a new coaching staff, I think they’re transitioning a little bit. They’re becoming more open to other ways of doing NIL and focusing more on what the community can do as a whole.” Crimson Tide AD Greg Byrne noted that “the hiring of Coach DeBoer, I think, made a lot of our fans understand that we just wouldn’t have Coach Saban here forever. That the comfort and safety that he brought to us was changed. And I think we’ve tried to be thoughtful with our messaging that we need to make sure we continue to evolve with the changes that are taking place in college athletics and that this is important to us.” Byrne also says: “Most of your donors – most – have more of an interest in supporting infrastructure, endowments and resources that allow young men and young women in your program to have an incredible experience. … I think the collective part when I talk to my peers, there isn’t a strong appetite for long-term support for those collectives. So I think more for it than anything else, it’s kind of bridging that gap in the short term as we navigate the waters we’re in from a legal and long-term structure standpoint.” More. (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier talks about the changing landscape and says it’s important to “embrace the things you know are the right things for our industry, and then some of the things that are not, you need to fight like hell to make sure you preserve them. I'm one that is a great example. I wouldn't be sitting and talking to you if I didn't have an athletic scholarship and then graduated from a great University. So, that type of access and opportunity means a lot to me, and it means a lot to the student-athletes and staff that we serve.” Frazier also observes the SEC and Big Ten continue to build a sizable resource advantage over the rest of the country, and for Group of 5 teams, “We've got to be thinking outside the box. We've got to be looking at sustainability. We've got to minimize the amount of uncertainty that we currently have right now coming out of that College Football Playoff negotiation and what's on our table. We did see a bump in revenue, I don't want to dispel that, but it's not at a level that we can see sustainability based on the transfer portal, [NIL], and also dealing with what we don’t know, which could be the outcomes of the NCAA and House case or other types of litigation on the horizon.” More from Frazier. D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge profiles how Troy has invested in its baseball program, and Trojans AD Brent Jones credits the department’s alignment with the university. “It starts with CEO support. With Chancellor [Jack] Hawkins, the alignment that we have with the board, with our fans. We have a great tradition. We have great weather.” Baseball HC Skylar Meade adds: “Baseball is important here at Troy. There’s certainly a great history and we are trying to put a mark on the national level. That’s been a goal since we started on July 15 of 2021. We really wanted to elevate our profile and have people know what Troy is doing. If you do that, then you can recruit better. If you recruit better then you have better production opportunities on the field and you can parlay that into continued success. That’s the recipe. It isn’t anything revolutionary.” Jones goes on to say that “when we went out and recruited Skylar, part of that was the belief in Skylar and the belief in this program. But also we had to show him renderings [of planned upgrades to Riddle-Pace Field]. We instantly started after his first year, tearing down the stands and rebuilding.” As far as the renovation itself, Jones tells Etheridge: “You want to make it fit the architectural structure. … How can we make it Troy-centric, fit what we do, and really have that wow-factor?” (link)

The Jacksonville Jaguars and the city of Jacksonville have unveiled the framework of a deal that would allocate $1.4B to renovate EverBank Stadium. SBJ’s Bret McCormick reports deal “would extend the Jaguars’ lease 30 years and include a non-relocation stipulation, and it would see the city spend $775M – $625M for the renovation and $150M for deferred maintenance paid upfront to the project – while the Jaguars would kick in $625M. The team will not be selling permanent seat licenses, which NFL teams sometimes use to fund stadium projects. … The team would cover 19.2% of the stadium’s annual operating utility expenses (it pays none right now), and the city and the Jaguars would partner on all non-NFL events (excluding the Gator Bowl and Florida-Georgia football games), with profits from those events going back into the stadium’s upkeep and capital projects. The two sides predicted those profits could cover 28% of the annual operating and utility expenses. The city currently pays all gameday expenses, but the new lease would shift 80% of those costs to Jags.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports Kansas City is likely to be considered for membership in the Missouri Valley with Northern Kentucky, Central Arkansas, and Little Rock also emerging as potential candidates. “Why the Arkansas schools? I’m told that presidents in the MVC remain interested in finding ways to improve the visibility of their schools outside the traditional midwestern footprint as to better recruit students, not just athletes. Arkansas isn’t a state that exports very many college students, but if the mission is to kick the tires on programs that are a) potentially persuadable, b) in new markets and c) aligned with MVC budgets, ambitions and sport offerings, these two were flagged as potential targets. There may very well be others.” After adding Grand Canyon and Seattle, Brown notes it’s possible the conference may expand further, as “WCC-aligned sources have expressed interest in other institutions, including Cal Baptist, as well as public institutions like UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara (interest that was not universally reciprocated). Should the league decide they want to expand to reach an even number of institutions, it will attract interest from several other schools, public and private alike.” For the WAC, Brown notes that “geography and instability” are not working in the conference’s favor, and “I’m told that there simply aren’t DII institutions in the league’s footprint that have the budget, interest, sponsored sports and membership support to warrant consideration. Recruiting existing DI members from the Big West, Summit, Big Sky or others is an uphill battle if schools do not perceive the WAC to be a stable option for the future.” More from Brown. (link)

North Carolina Business Court Chief Judge Louis Bledsoe III has issued a stay on all discovery and further court-related work in the ACC’s lawsuit against Florida State while FSU appeals to the North Carolina Supreme Court. The school is appealing Bledsoe’s earlier ruling that denied the school’s motion to dismiss the case. FSU has yet to file with the North Carolina Supreme Court, but attorneys have indicated they intend to. Bledsoe: “Under North Carolina law, the longstanding general rule is that an appeal divests the trial court of jurisdiction over a case until the appellate court returns its mandate. The lower court only retains jurisdiction to take action which aids the appeal and to hear motions and grant orders that do not concern the subject matter of the suit and are not affected by the judgment that has been appealed.” (link)

The 2025 Maui Invitational Field includes Baylor, Chaminade, NC State, Oregon, Seton Hall, Texas, UNLV and USC. CBS’ Matt Norlander adds some context: “The '25 Maui field was tentatively assembled in '23 after USC left for the Big Ten but before Oregon did the same. At that point, both schools were not in the same league. Now they are. I was told Maui was given an NCAA exemption allowing in two schools from the same conference. The bigger story here is the future of the Maui Invitational (which will thankfully return to Lahaina this year after moving in 2023 due to the devastating wildfires). College basketball's eight-team MTE format could be going the way of the dodo in the next two years. It's TBD if NIL-driven MTEs populate CBB in 2025 + beyond. But the existence of this Vegas-based NIL event is a major disruptor in the space—the potential for other events like it to pop up is being taken seriously. Teams scheduled for '25 MTEs might eventually pull out of those. Maui's format is likely to change after 2025, sources told CBS Sports. One possibility: Mutating to two four-team MTEs w/ eight teams playing two games in Hawaii. That's a bummer for CBB traditionalists—but Maui might be forced to adapt to ensure its appeal moving forward. Playing three games in three days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean—even with the outstanding reputation and history of the event—has lost its appeal for a lot of programs. The concept is great for TV and for NCAAT résumé-building—but it's not a money-making endeavor for teams. … This is a big issue right now b/c it has major downstream impacts on scheduling; the logjam seems to be worsening. There are 8-team MTEs scheduled six months from now that don't have full fields. That's never happened. Interesting times ahead.” (link)

Omaha Productions, Words + Pictures, and ESPN+ are already planning a second season of Full Court Press, with Connecticut women’s basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers being eyed as one of the stars, according to Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy. Omaha Founder Peyton Manning says the idea for the doc came to him while he was producing Quarterback, a similar behind-the-scenes show for Netflix. “We found these things are better when you have multiple players. Not just focused on one single player. Caitlin [Clark] actually wanted to have other players in it—as opposed to just focusing on her.” (link)
