Freshly minted James Madison AD Matt Roan is fully aware that he’s entering an athletic department with momentum but tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “I'm encouraged by people saying, ‘Hey, there’s still air above us.’ There's still a ton of things that we can accomplish. But it's an exciting opportunity, and it's a great problem to have. … I would much rather be in a situation where there's been a ton of success than having to climb out just to get back to ground level or to try to fix things. [Outgoing AD] Jeff [Bourne], over 25 years, has built tremendous infrastructure. There's incredible resources. There's incredible support. Because of the competitive successes, there is opportunity. It's my responsibility to keep it going and see if we can even make it go even steeper.” Roan’s first priority will be to sit back and listen. “For me, you learn when you learn about the people and what's important to them and where they think the opportunities exist. Outside of the department, there's a lot of people that care about JMU and I want to find out what's important to them.” (link)

A recently announced $237.75M gift from Issac Batterson 7th Family Trust CEO/Batterson Farms Corp. Founder Greg Gerami to Florida A&M has drawn scrutiny from some who note that Gerami last year backed out of a $95M pledge to Coastal Carolina, citing disrespect and racism by the university. FAMU on Sunday released a statement that reads: “As expected, some individuals in the public are and will continue researching Mr. Gerami. Please know that FAMU has done its due diligence when it comes to this matter.” According to Inside Higher Ed’s Kathryn Palmer, Gerami transferred the donation in the form of stocks (the $237.75 million represented the stock value at the time of transfer, he said) to FAMU last month. Gerami at a press conference this week said the stocks “will be sold before the year is over.” The university signed a nondisclosure agreement regarding the deal. Rutgers lecturer Jerell Blakeley cites Gerami’s “strange” online presence as a reason for skepticism, noting there is no mention of the Issac Batterson 7th Family Trust online beyond news coverage about the donation to Florida A&M. “If the money is there without issue, then I’m wrong and the university has a foundation for great prosperity by way of an ultra rich, unknown business tycoon who seems to care little about how he or his business would benefit from such a bold philanthropic effort.” Gerami calls Blakeley’s information “completely wrong” but declined to go into further detail. College Hockey Insider publisher Mike McMahon shares what he’s hearing about potential conference expansion and writes: “I get the sense that Atlantic Hockey is looking to expand but has hit the pause button in large part due to changes within the NCAA and not having a clear answer on what the NCAA might look like in two, three, or four years. Hockey East has specifically said they aren’t expanding to 12 teams, but if they did, they would want a program that adds more to Hockey East than Hockey East adds to the program. That’s why they took on Notre Dame. Associating yourself with Notre Dame, and getting Notre Dame on your campus, was a positive for the other Hockey East schools. Several programs are ready to jump into a league. Long Island has made significant strides since the program was launched in 2020. They would be a perfect fit for Atlantic Hockey if and when the league decides to expand. Atlantic Hockey opened the process and accepted new applications last fall. The league wouldn’t be doing that if it had no intention of expanding. I think they’re just waiting for the time to be right. Right now, a lot of leagues are looking at each other, waiting for someone else to make the first move. No one wants to be first, it seems.” (link)

North Carolina Representative David Willis (R-68) joins the Ovies + Giglio podcast to discuss his bill that would require North Carolina and NC State to play in-state schools at least once a year in football and basketball. Willis argues it makes sense on a number of levels, starting with fan interest. “If you look at any of the games that we’ve had from an attendance perspective, these fans fill up the stadiums. They want to see these games. … It brings economic impact and development. I mean, you've got fans that are coming, they're spending hotel dollars, they're spending restaurant dollars, they're staying overnight. For the teams themselves, they may turn around and go right back home on the bus. It saves them a ton of money because they're not having to fly out-of-state. It’s hundreds of thousands of dollars just in cost for these teams to go out-of-state.” Willis also argues that for NC State and North Carolina, “if you’re worried, kind of from that big brother perspective, of not being able to beat Charlotte [Appalachian State] or ECU, then you got bigger problems.” Also: “The NCAA has completely bungled what is its largest revenue generator they completely dropped the ball on NIL they're at risk of destroying college football as we know it and they still got their head in the sand and so I think part of this for us is protection for our schools, for our universities, for these programs that we want to see and you know one provision that's in there…is if [UNC and NC State] end up in different conferences, they’d still be required to play each other. So, we’re trying to protect our schools here in North Carolina and be a little bit more forward-thinking.” As far as the bill’s chances of becoming law, Willis “fully expects” it to pass the House and has spoken with several senators who support it as well. “So, we’re looking for this to move.” (link)

In a new series from Collegiate Sports Connect dubbed “The Career Hustle,” NC State Senior Assoc. AD/Wolfpack Club Executive Director Ben Broussard joins Connect’s Kristen Eargle to examine his career path. This past year, the Wolfpack Club welcomed nearly 1,000 new donors and increased overall annual gifts by 13%. Prior to NC State, Broussard set fundraising records at Colorado and LSU, and he talks with Eargle about getting his start in the profession, how he proved he was ready for leadership, ways the definition of success has evolved and what’s more important in the industry now than it was 20 years ago. Broussard: “As I get higher up on the ladder with more perspective on what the bigger picture is, I realize how little I knew. You think you're a genius at 28, 29 years old, but you just don't know what you don't know, and so yeah I would give some wisdom on that topic to myself if I could.” On maintaining balance, Broussard says there are very few opportunities in college athletics where you can’t involve your family. “I use that. I took my 13-year-old with me to the Final Four, I took my 16-year-old with me to the wrestling ACC championships. I try my best to have my family around me as much as I can because I know there's times where I'm going to miss things where they're going to look around and wish their dad was there, and that's part of the equation. Everybody in this business does that. It's just when you are around you've got to be as present as you possibly can and so I try to let my staff know that anytime you have the opportunity to have the little ones around it makes everybody happier.” Lots more in the full Q&A on Connect. An eight-team men’s basketball MTE in Las Vegas is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, according to CBS’ Matt Norlander and Dennis Dodd, who note the games, which will be played under the umbrella of an event called the Players Era Festival, will take place during Thanksgiving week. The event will include $1M NIL payouts for the participating programs, which so far include Alabama, Houston, Notre Dame, Oregon, Rutgers, San Diego State and Texas A&M. An eighth school will be chosen from a small group that is still under consideration. Additionally, “significant NIL opportunities (believed to be in the neighborhood of another $1M) would be awarded exclusively to the winner or winners of the event, depending on the final bracket format(s). The money would then be distributed to athletes by the collectives. The athletes, while in Las Vegas, would be required to participate in multiple off-the-court activities to earn that NIL money.” The duo also reports organizers are planning to double the size of the event for 2025 and beyond, with Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan, Syracuse and Virginia having already had discussions. One coach whose team is scheduled to play in the event says: "I would play on Nick Jr., I would play on YouTube. It doesn't matter. All the other stuff passed through our compliance smell test all the way through. We have not run up against a roadblock that is a definitive no." (link)

Learfield President of Brand Management & Marketing/CLC CEO Cory Moss joins SBJ’s Ben Portnoy to talk about CLC’s involvement with EA Sports College Football 25 and notes it’s up to the student-athletes and CLC to verify rosters from year-to-year. Student-athletes can edit their own info with EA, and CLC double-checks the official rosters with each school and provides that info to EA. “As you go into playing the college football video game in one year, you pick up the same game and play the next year, through a live update that new player is now on a different institution playing football. So there's a lot of technology, automation that has to go into monitoring those transitions.” On the behind-the-scenes work, Moss points out the assets have undergone significant changes since the game was last released. “The TVs and the monitors that you were playing games on were a lot different 10 years ago. The software… the last game was probably on the PlayStation 2 platform and now we're on PlayStation 5 and Xbox and everything else. If you think about the schools and their stadiums, their mascots, their traditions, some of those things change, but definitely the stadium has changed in the last 10 years. So, think about all of the assets and the pictures and the thousands and thousands of pictures of the stadiums that need to be recreated and then those have got to be spot on. Again, when you're looking at the TVs and the 4K, high-def TVs compared to 10 years ago, people don’t want to see blurry stadiums, they don’t want to see blurry mascots. … You’re not taking a 2014 game and just updating it. You’re not taking a Madden game and turning it into college. You’re totally recreating a college football game with all the elements that college football looks like today that it didn’t look like 10 years ago.” (link)

AL.com’s Joseph Goodman explores what the transfer portal is like for high-profile players, and one parent explains: “Within 35 seconds — I’m not kidding you — within 35 seconds my phone was blowing up. When they say it is like recruiting on steroids, the first 36 hours were exhausting. Any school you can think of was either calling, texting, sending DMs. It was unbelievable and some of them were like we’ll just show up with money.” That money keeps increasing, as Goodman reports that “in this last transfer window, seven-figure deals for players without starting experience wasn’t uncommon.” The parent adds: “I have heard that there are guys who have been told that there’s just not going to be money for you, or we’ll give you $50K. And that kind of says to me, hmm, how important am I going to be to this team? NIL isn’t important, but you don’t want to be the $60K guy.” As for who pays the most, the parent says: “I think that the smaller markets struggle more to get players, so the money is bigger. If you’ve got a powerhouse, then you know you’re going to have eyes on you and you know there is going to be a lot more attention than less-watched schools. … It’s all kind of convoluted. You hear about crazy money and sometimes it’s not true. And that’s why you can’t really chase the money. You’ve got to find the right fit. And you don’t want to be the cheapest guy on the team. You don’t have to be the most expensive guy either, right?” (link)

FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett and John Brice offer several takeaways from the National Football Operations Organization's annual clinic, which took place in Frisco, Texas, last week. During one panel, a DFO said his school is devoting extra personnel to chaperone the postgame handshake after catching two schools tampering with their players just moments after the game ended. A Group of 5 DFO added that his school's basketball coach has considered ending the postgame handshake altogether to forestall such tampering. At the same time, many in attendance acknowledged that tampering works both ways with one G5 collective operator saying: “Let's call it like it is, who hasn't tampered?’ We get calls all the time, 'Can this guy play for you?'" Another DFO panelist explained that his university is in the process of hiring staff to get a better understanding of the financial realities of NIL after losing a starter who commanded twice as much money in the spring portal than in the winter. He quipped: “There's better players in January, there's more money in May.” The discourse was not all negative, though, as panelists noted NIL can foster relationships between players and donors that could benefit the players after college. One DFO pointed out that the need to re-recruit has led to former players and donors coming back to campus more often, which results in deeper relationships with the student-athletes. "A lot of these kids choose to stay because we're pouring into their life outside of football.” More. (link)

Congratulations to Charlotte for capturing the Excellence in Management Cup (EM Cup) for the 2022-23 FBS season per a research study from the Texas A&M College Sports Lab. The EM Cup is conducted to bring awareness to athletic departments that are maximizing fiscal resources through championship victories. The study determines which FBS athletic department is most efficient with its spending habits and how that correlates to the number of championships won. At the conclusion of the athletic competition year, EM Cup scores are calculated using the number of championships earned, the number of sports offered and total athletic department operating expenses.” The 49ers are the 10th winners of the cup, which was last awarded in 2018, and were followed in the rankings by Toledo, Arkansas State, Kent State, Ball State, Southern Miss, Arkansas, Miami (OH), Akron and Wichita State in the top 10. Disney Senior EVP/CFO Hugh Johnson pointed out during the company’s earnings call Tuesday morning that Q2 operating income in Sports decreased slightly YoY “driven primarily by a decrease at ESPN. … As expected, at ESPN, lower results at the domestic business reflect higher programming and production costs from the timing of an additional College Football Playoff game in the quarter versus the prior year, which were only partially offset by higher ad revenue. … ESPN domestic ad sales increased by more than 20% versus the prior year or high single digits when adjusted for the [CFP] timing shift of an additional game as well as a new NFL divisional playoff game in Q2 of this year.” CEO Bob Iger said of ESPN: “I see sports continuing basically to shine in a world where there's just considerably more choice. Live matters. The other thing that's really important is the engagement that Live generates. … As I look ahead, I think ESPN is going to make a pivot toward digital, but without abandoning linear. So, it will remain on linear. If people want to get ESPN and its different channels through a cable or a satellite subscription, that's fine. … The plan is if you buy ESPN flagship, then you'll get all the ESPN+ programming in it. If you do not want that, then you can buy ESPN+ on its own. In addition, if you – our current plan is that with the tile that we're putting on the combined Disney+ Hulu app, the ESPN tile, you'll be able – if you're an ESPN+ subscriber –you'll be able to get ESPN+ through that tile.” Iger also noted the company is being selective about where it targets international rights: “It's an opportunity for us to plant the seeds of more growth for ESPN outside the United States, but we're walking before we run in that regard.” (link)
