ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, have more details on how a potential House settlement would be paid for as a memo from the NCAA circulated late last week & indicated “an expected $1.6 billion that would come from reductions in NCAA distribution, sources told ESPN. The remaining $1.1 billion is expected to come from NCAA reserves, catastrophic insurance, new revenue and budget cuts, sources said. Of that $1.6 billion, nearly 60 percent is expected to come from leagues outside the Power 5 leagues that are named in the House lawsuit, according to sources. (The NCAA is named, and all of the schools are members.) The other 40 percent will come from the power conferences.” Not surprisingly, some non-P5 leagues are less than enthused with the breakdown with an unnamed leader from a smaller league telling ESPN: “We're not named in the lawsuit. We don't have a voice in any of this. We're just being told what our taxation is.” Another: “This is incredibly unfair and has a dramatic impact. I'm losing about 10 percent of my operating budget. Do I cut two staff members in order for money to go to Zion Williamson? Ninety percent of the money in the suit projects to go to power five football and men's basketball players. The 40-percent payment for the power conference isn't proportionate.” More, including a “Litigation Expense” breakdown chart from Dellenger with lots of financial data and context. (link, link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: “The Football Oversight Committees have approved the proposal to allow unlimited coaches. This would let analysts, QCs coach in practice and games. Still only allowed 11 recruiters. D1 Council must approve it, denied last year. Coaches want this because it's more jobs, esp for young coaches. Some admins are worried about costs and the P4 taking more from the G5. But with lawsuits and player costs coming, perhaps the money won't be there for as many moves. If the unlimited coaches proposal is passed by the D1 Council, expect standalone special teams coordinators, positionless offensive/defensive coordinators and an assistant at each position like the NFL. The NFL, without limits, has around 22-23 coaches.” (link)

William & Mary AD Brian Mann comments on Richmond Football’s move to the Patriot League: “We have been tied to Richmond football for an awfully long time and finding a true rivalry like that is a hard thing to do.” How about the Tribe’s conference positioning? Mann: “We’re proud to be in the CAA. It remains one of the strongest (FCS) conferences in the country. We’ve had some great success over the last couple of years in that conference and we’re going to continue to do everything we can to build strength in it, and use it as a springboard into the (FCS) playoffs and make a deep run, as we did a couple of years ago. [...] What people have started to realize is that the best thing that we can do is let this changing landscape play out as much as possible, and see where the CAA falls, see how we are able to strengthen under this new membership, because there’s just so much uncertainty about the future.” (link)

NCAA Assoc. Director of External Communications Saquandra Heath writes on the impact of the sports betting culture: “Imagine playing a sport you love, giving it your all in every game. In addition, you're balancing your academic studies as you pressure yourself to succeed in the classroom and on the field. If that weren't enough pressure, you also have strangers harassing you via social media, spouting abusive threats because they've lost money based on your performance or that of your team. It's a mental health nightmare. Harassment related to sports betting can cause serious harm to student-athlete mental health and well-being. … That's why the NCAA is advocating for elimination of player-specific prop bets in collegiate competitions.” Heath also shares some statistics: One in three high-profile athletes received abusive messages from someone with a betting interest; 90% of harassment is generated online or through social media; Across the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, 54K+ posts/comments were flagged by Signify's AI for potential abuse or threats and reviewed by human in-house analysts; Of those 54K, 4K were confirmed as abusive or threatening and reported to the relevant social media platforms, with some elevated to law enforcement; WBB players received 3x as many threats as MBB ones. Abilene Christian announces major upgrades to Baseball’s Crutcher Scott Field, which will include “expanded player development, coaching and recruiting facilities, significantly upgrading the home team fan experience and expanding outdoor community space. Upgrades will include chairback seats and shade covering on the first base side.” Twenty-five “lead donors” have committed to the project & all work is expected to be done in time for the 2025 season. McNeese’s Jack Doland Field House weight room is getting a $1.5M renovation and will be renamed the Navarre Performance Center. There will be 20 free-weight racks, a 30-yard indoor turf sprint and speed development section, cardio equipment, a dumbbell workout station, (AKA the “Iron Pokes Dumbbell Pit”) and a new Poke Fuel Nutrition Area, among other amenities. Construction is set to begin at the end of the summer and be wrapped up by the beginning of 2025. (link)

Freshly minted Green Bay Men’s Basketball HC Doug Gottlieb talks about splitting duties with the Phoenix and Fox Sports: “I think they actually mutually promote themselves. This gives Green Bay something different. It’s going to help our program with NIL money and recruiting. And the other thing is it allows me to take less money and pay my assistant coaches more. But it gives [Phoenix AD] Josh [Moon] and the entire UW-Green Bay athletic department a new kind of publicity. With my connections in the basketball world and in the media, I believe the show is a great way for us to only promote the program.” Gottlieb also acknowledges there’s no way to quiet those critical of his coaching the team and continuing the radio show. “There’s nothing I can say back to them that will make them feel differently. The only thing I can do is build a team, and when we start playing in November, people will see. People will see what we’re about and how hard we play.” (link)

Virginia Men’s Basketball HC Tony Bennett talks about how roster churn added some urgency to constructing the roster for next season: “We knew there was going to be enough players to find who would work out, but no one can say exactly what’s going to work and how you’re going to get players. There’s a lot of stories out there, a lot of things being floated around about what certain kids are getting [in NIL]. Not everything you hear is true, but it is definitely a different time. Everything’s been deregulated, so it does present some challenges.” Bennett says when approaching the portal it’s important to have several targets. “You better have a deep list of who you’re going after. You can say, ‘We’re going after two point guards.’ But you better have six or seven. … We’ve competed, won a national championship…but there’s now different levels of competing. It’s no longer an amateur sport. Everyone knows that, or at least people are discovering that. I like how our leadership has observed and now has proceeded in a sound way. You’ll never align with every one of your constituents, but [I like] how we’re trying to do it aligned with the right things and…being consistent with Virginia’s values.” (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney doubles down on his position against taking transfers, explaining on SiriusXM College: "There's three types of players in the portal. It's really pretty simple. Most of the guys in the portal aren't good enough to play for us. The second type of guy going in the portal, he's only going in as a formality because the deal's already been done. He knows where he's going before he ever goes in the portal. So we're not getting that guy. And then the third type of guy is going in the portal just to see what he can get. And we're never going to win that war. So we’ve been really fortunate, because first of all, we’re established. Been there 16 years. And we don’t have a lot of attrition. I mean we had 127 guys go through spring ball and 125 are still on the roster after spring, post portal closing. That’s a miracle in today’s world.” (link, link)

Former Florida State/Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher sounds off on the current state of college sports, asserting on SiriusXM’s Off Campus radio show: “I’m going to be honest with you, college sports is the most unfair thing we do. College sports is unfair, and it’s because there’s haves and have-nots. … You think about how it’s set up, each commissioner, and Greg Sankey has done an unbelievable job for the SEC, Big Ten commissioners have done an unbelievable job for them. There’s only so many pieces of the pie, so they’ve taken them and they’ve hurt the ACC and the Big 12 and of course the Pac-12, who ended up folding. I think we have to find a way to come together and get ahead of college football, where everything is balanced. I don’t like the inequities that are going on. It’s not fair, but it’s never been fair. You say the NCAA was the governing body, no it wasn’t because each conference operated with [autonomy] to itself.” Fisher would like to see a model similar to the NFL’s and explains: “If you’re going to go to revenue-sharing, I want a salary cap and I want everybody to abide by that salary cap. That’s what’s got to happen to give the ACC schools and the Big 12 schools a legitimate chance.” Fisher says when he was at FSU, “sometimes when I came back from those [ACC] meetings and I was in a bad mood. I had gotten into it with the commissioner over there trying to tell him this was coming and they wouldn’t listen to me. We got into a couple of knock-down, drag-outs and I was letting [former ACC Commissioner John Swofford] know this was happening.” More from Fisher. (link)

Outgoing LEAD1 President/CEO Tom McMillen tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit that building consensus among ADs has become increasingly challenging: “It has become a lot more siloed. It is not as inviting an atmosphere as when I started. … Athletic directors rarely come together, and I don’t think that is good for the industry.” McMillen goes on to say: “In the beginning, it wasn’t so legalistically focused. We were focused on academic misconduct, a lot of internal NCAA issues, regional scheduling—a lot of things dealing with the enterprise. Now, we spend so much of our time watching and observing and monitoring these legal issues.” The lack of meaningful action from Congress has also been a point of frustration for McMillen, who notes: “If you go back to the earliest NIL bills, they were simple, in retrospect. And all of a sudden, the issues morphed, and they got more complicated. It has been a moving target.” While he says he favors college athletes making money, McMillen explains that “if I were playing God, I would take this vast sum of money on the table and find ways to redirect it to HBCUs. I would amplify the idea that this (college sports) is one of the greatest professional development machines, and I would have gone much further. The big vision of college sports is that we don’t have a half-a-million but a million college athletes. We create more opportunities, do more for underprivileged schools. That is kind of where I would like the system to go, and I don’t think it is out of the question.” (link)

Patriot League Commissioner Jennifer Heppel tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor she understands the speculation concerning potential expansion to include William & Mary but adds: “It predates my time. Conversations between the Patriot League and William & Mary have been going on for decades. I personally have never been involved in any conversations. They are a great institution.” Speaking of expansion writ large, Heppel says: “That is something that, as of right now, we’ve had no further conversations, but certainly I understand why there’s speculation.” That said, she believes the addition of Richmond makes the league more desirable for other FCS programs. “We’re small. We’re seven institutions. So I think sometimes that level of success has flown under the radar. Richmond’s acknowledgement of that and understanding and belief that it’s a fit for them, not only institutionally but athletically, really validates what we believe we know about ourselves.” (link)

North Carolina Superior Court Judge Alyson Adams Grine granted a temporary restraining order that bars the North Carolina Board of Trustees from holding closed sessions to discuss UNC’s athletic department “financials, budgeting, deficit, or ongoing or future conference alignment and related strategic planning.” The decision comes a day after attorney David McKenzie filed a complaint arguing the financial health of a public university’s athletics budget “is undeniably a matter of public concern.” McKenzie argues that if UNC athletics is running a deficit, there are three likely ways to fill the revenue gap: get more money from UNC students, get more money from North Carolina taxpayers, or get another athletic conference to pay UNC more. While Grine’s order didn’t specifically address McKenzie’s arguments, she found he had raised “specific facts” that reveal “immediate and irreparable damage will result if the TRO does not issue.” (link)

Florida State is asking the NCAA to reduce the penalties it incurred as part of an adjudicated case concerning NIL recruiting violations. The Seminoles are requesting an elimination of the scholarship reductions – five total during the 2024 and ’25 seasons – the limit on recruiting days and a fine of 1% of the Seminoles’ football budget. In its letter to the NCAA, the school states: “FSU should not be the only institution penalized simply because it was first in the queue, the violations for which it is responsible were more limited, and it cooperated fully to resolve the case.” (link)

Texas A&M inks a new five-year, $47M apparel contract with Adidas, according to The Eagle’s Travis L. Brown, who reports the term began July 1, 2022, and runs through June 30, 2027. Former Aggies AD Ross Bjork says the contract was finalized in August of last year and adds: “In the market of sports apparel and college athletics, it’s really a top-15 deal. In a suppressed market, with Under Armour being out of the market, there’s two players: it’s Nike and Adidas. And when we went through the negotiation, it was clear that Adidas was the best option, financially – equipment, apparel, all the components that they do from a marketing standpoint. And they’ve just been a good partner here at A&M.” The Aggies will receive $3M per year in base compensation, plus $6M in products. Adidas also will provide a guaranteed minimum royalty payment each year, beginning at $380K, followed by four years of $400K and another $380K in the final year of the deal. In addition to the $47M, Adidas will provide A&M $1M a year for mutually agreed upon marketing initiatives. (link)

Nebraska is changing the timing and sequencing of its $450M in renovations to Memorial Stadium. Rather than starting with the south side of the stadium, Huskers AD Troy Dannen says the first focus of renovation will shift to the east and west sections of the stadium behind the team benches. Dannen wants to put chairback seating on both sides. “The rationale for that, quite simply, is the east and west has the potential to monetize itself.” The unveiling of chairbacks would occur no sooner than before the 2026 season, and Dannen believes re-seating season ticket holders requires a full year of notice. Meanwhile, Dannen tells The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman he’s preparing for a $20M line-item expense in the annual budget. “Urgency is not the right word, but (there’s) demand to make sure we can support the costs of college athletics moving forward. So it’s a high, high priority. We’re starting from a great place, but that doesn’t mean we’re there.” NU still plans to install a new Wi-fi setup in time for the 2024 season. Dannen also notes he would consider requesting public funds in addition to fundraising. “At some point in time, I will ask everybody for everything once we have a financial model that doesn’t compromise our ability to compete in the new world of college athletics.” (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel and Jayna Bardahl examine college softball’s growing popularity, and Oklahoma HC Patty Gasso recalls her first years at the helm when the dugout at the public park at which they played was too small for the team. Now, the Sooners play in the $48M Love’s Field. “Every day we come out when there’s a crowd, it’s still a wow moment for us. We’re still trying to get used to this. I think everyone is just in disbelief, to be honest.” When the NCAA held its first softball national championship in 1982, the sport was dominated by teams on or near the West Coast, but as more teams began sponsoring the sport, more AQs were awarded. Former UCLA HC Sue Enquist: “I was the loudest person that said, ‘Crappy idea. We need the best teams in the postseason.’ They’re like, ‘No, we’ve got to build the sport nationally.’ “Fast forward to 2005. Carol Hutchins and her Michigan team came and upset us in the finals. And for the first time ever, you have a snow belt team win the championship. Now, all the big schools in those eastern conferences, SEC, ACC are like, ‘Sh–, we can win!’ And the sport exploded.” Enquist adds part of the attraction of college softball is the players’ transparency. “Would we be as popular a sport if we were just a bunch of robots out there being super competitive? Probably not. We’re an individual sport that is really camouflaged as a team sport. When I get up to the plate it’s an individual sport. There aren’t nine people getting in the box with me.” More. If It’s in the Game…
+ EA Sports has released the official College Football 25 reveal trailer to generally rave reviews. Have a look. (link)
+ ESPN College GameDay host Rece Davis says he spent around 250 hours recording about 30,000 audio samples for the game. (link)
+ ESPN’s Michael Rothstein offers an inside look at how the game was made, including the establishment of a “pageantry database, which became a rolling list of traditions and idiosyncrasies for all 134 FBS programs. They asked schools for help, added what they knew from their own college football fandoms and even scoured fan forums to find things they may have missed – or to learn that a school no longer did tradition X or hand signal Y.” Rothstein also notes the majority of the 150 stadiums in the game had to be built from scratch. “While there were some pieces from NCAA Football 14 they could use, those stadiums and mascots were built on a different engine for a different console. Not much would translate, so they had to start from the beginning. Building an empty stadium took about a week depending on the venue, with Syracuse's JMA Wireless Dome among the trickiest because it was indoors and cavernous, so lighting had to be set up a bit differently than other schools. [Production Director Christian] McLeod called it ‘the perfect storm of stadiums.’” In total, EA received tens of thousands of assets from schools in addition to their own work. They asked for and compiled touchdown celebrations for each team and stadium, how players celebrate after turnovers, how teams run out of tunnels, crowd hand signals, chants on key downs and details for stadiums, mascots, cheerleaders and uniforms. McLeod: "We want to make sure that, again, everybody's team is somebody's favorite. Texas and Texas State need to feel the same when you're playing as them if you're a fan of that school." Lots more. (link)
+ Extra Points publisher Matt Brown explains why college sports games may be limited to consoles and not make their way to PCs and notes the short answer is: “The juice, right now, isn’t worth the squeeze.” PC games are particularly challenging to port because they require a “different level of testing and continuous support.” Furthermore, AAA sports titles are overwhelmingly played on consoles. “Specifically, multiple people familiar with EA’s offerings suggested that north of 80%, and for some titles, north of 90% of the game’s player base, plays on consoles.” Further still, a disproportionate number of PC gamers live outside North America, where college football doesn’t have the same appeal as the NBA, FIFA, etc. “Throw in the fact that publishers also need to be concerned about how the PC mod community could cause problems with college and athlete intellectual property licenses, (not to mention cheating in online play) and you have all sorts of compelling reasons for a major sports publisher to pass on a PC port.” (link)
