Liberty Football HC Jamey Chadwell, regarding the potential Group of 5 postseason future for football, suggests working within the current College Football Playoff framework, whereby the highest-rated G5 program remains in the mix for the field, but the next four highest-ranked G5 teams could then coordinate with the bowl games to host a four-team event in a central location that could be held the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Chadwell: “Everybody wants to play for a championship, and everyone wants to play for a realistic championship, not based off of maybe we’ll get in off of strength of schedule, this or that. If you lay it out and say the top four [Group of Five] teams that don’t get into the CFP [play each other] 1) from a TV standpoint, people will be excited about that; 2) kids are playing for a championship, and if they don’t make the CFP or bust, they still get to play for something valuable. … G5 is overlooked more than anybody. You’ve got to make them relevant. You’ve got to. I think that helps you stay relevant. I think it makes it important. Plus, I think it helps you continue to build your brand. Any time you can get rewarded and get special opportunities like that, it’s important.” An industry source familiar with the matter told SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “If something like that were to happen, I think it’d be critical that the bowl games be a part of it. ESPN would require that as well. I don’t think there’s any fear from any side about that kind of playoff. I just don’t sense a lot of interest from the Group of Five conferences, because they’re aspiring to be at the top. They’re not trying to create a divide.” (link)

Sticking with the Group of 5 positioning, Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez: “We are committed to the CFP. Anything would have to be significant enough to even think about stepping away from the CFP. [The MWC’s] not as happy with the revenue distribution agreement for the new CFP deal,” which leaves the league’s schools “making about the same amount (around $1.8 million) per year as they were in the previous four-team CFP, despite the total value of the system more than doubling to $1.3 billion annually.” For his part, San Diego State AD John David Wicker believes there are “too many other issues facing college sports to consider a new postseason model.” The Associated Press’ Ralph Russo believes a G5 tournament “might not replace access to the CFP,” but “could become a new element to the postseason that gives the conference champions that don’t make the 12- or 14-team field the football equivalent to the college basketball’s NIT.” He added it “could possibly even incorporate some lower-tier bowl games.” (link)

The Bald Faced Truth’s John Canzano reports that Oregon State and Washington State are putting the “final touches” on the TV deal for their 13 combined home games next season. The CW will be the primary partner, owning the rights to 10 of the games. Fox wanted the other three contests: the Civil War between OSU and Oregon; the Wazzu vs. Texas Tech tilt and the Cougars and Beavers kick in late November. Kickoff times for 11 of the games have been set and one source to Canzano notes: “Fans will be pleased. There will be daylight football.” As previously reported, the Pac-12 Network will take on production of the home football games for OSU and WSU, as the CW isn’t equipped with an in-house sports production. Road games this season will be carried by the Mountain West’s media partners - Fox and CBS. (link)

Another day, another ACC update as the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker stays on the case & reports: “The ACC must provide an unredacted copy of its ESPN contract to Clemson within seven days, a South Carolina judge has ordered in an interim ruling. But the contract remains confidential and can only be used for the litigation. That news comes from a filing submitted Friday morning.” (link)

On3 CEO Shannon Terry reacts to reporting around the potential House v. NCAA settlement: “Even with a Roster Value ‘salary’ cap of X (call it $20M annually), the opportunity for ‘NIL’ deals will remain. This will be so difficult to govern. How do you discern if a sports marketing opportunity from XYZ brand isn't really affiliated with or loosely affiliated with a school/booster or collective? This will take years to work out through real-life situations. It is not stated enough, but every scholarship athlete receives significant value through their scholarships, perks, cost of living, etc. The notion that athletes ‘work for free’ needs to end ASAP. Athletes receive somewhere between $100K to $150K annually for these benefits. Yes, ‘many’ deserve more than this value, but most, from a % standpoint, do not. Overall, this is a very positive development(s), IMO. Everyone who opposes athletes getting cash either accepts it or moves on to a different sport. It's happening, and eventually, we will have a league/association that will set up more competitive parameters around transfers, recruiting, roster management, etc. This is all part of the free market system in the USA and is a necessary step toward effective resolution. College sports will always be the greatest, even with athletes being compensated.” (link)

With the top of the campus org chart changing this summer at Cal and Stanford, The Hotline’s Jon Wilner offers advice to the new campus leaders, including the need to fully support football, even in the face of fears for what that could do to the institutions’ academic reputation and Olympic sports. Wilner argues that “the current approach, with football kept at a distance and viewed as a necessary evil, will guarantee continued mediocrity, ongoing irrelevance and ultimately, a one-way ticket into the competitive abyss. The best way to ensure success for tennis and swimming, golf and softball in the next era of college sports? Win on Saturday. Win on Saturday, and the money flows. [...] [Cal Chancellor Richard] Lyons and [incoming Stanford President Jonathan] Levin shouldn’t apologize for football. They should embrace it.” Wilner also believes that Cal, again, will need to consider downsizing its 30-sport department, while both schools must provide more than “tacit approval” of NIL. Finally, with the future of the ACC in question, the Bay Area rivals should begin discussions with the Big Ten for membership at a 25% share: “It won’t be an easy sell. Lyons and Levin are businessmen. But starting this summer, if not today, they need to become lobbyists. They are taking charge with the future at stake for both athletic departments. Whether they like it or not, the path to prosperity is 100 yards long.” (link)

Following the Jontay Porter betting scandal, in which the Toronto Raptors center was on a two-way contract, earning $415K this season and according to the NBA allegedly passed along info about his health to a known gambler and manipulated his performance for betting purposes in at least one game, the NBA and its partner sportsbooks, including BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel, are discussing changes to betting menus to combat similar occurrences in the future. Among the changes being discussed are prohibiting betting on players on two-way contracts between the G League and the NBA, but there are also more extreme measures being tossed around, such as not allowing bets on the “under” on a player prop. An NBA spokesperson: “Since states began legalizing sports betting in 2018, we have worked closely with betting operators as well as integrity monitoring organizations to put in place essential monitoring and reporting systems so that we are best positioned to identify potential betting anomalies and to act to protect the integrity of our game.” (link)

More details are beginning to emerge in a potential House v. NCAA settlement as Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, as well as ESPN’s Pete Thamel & Dan Murphy, break it all down. $2.9B is the number reported as the settlement amount with the NCAA paying out the sum over 10 years to previous student-athletes who did not have the opportunity to monetize their NIL. Along with the settlement would come a revenue sharing agreement moving forward that could cost Power 4 programs up to $30M per year, broken down this way: “(1) a $17-22 million revenue distribution cap for athletes; (2) at least $2 million in withheld NCAA distribution for back damages; and (3) as much as $10 million in additional scholarship costs related to an expansion of sport-specific roster sizes — a concept previously unpublicized.” More on that last item: “The expense of increasing scholarships is significant. Two power conference administrators told Yahoo Sports that they plan to add more than 100 additional scholarships at the expense of $9-10 million annually. A portion of the additional scholarship expense may be counted toward the revenue-sharing cap, but that too is a fluctuating figure.” From an industry source on the negotiations: “They've got stuff on paper. This is not just lawyers and commissioners meeting and having a cocktail. This snowball is moving downhill. The horizon on this is about a month.” Timeline on when all of this could go into effect: Fall of 2025 at the earliest. Lots more. (link, link)

Memphis has formed a six-person search committee to assist with its hire of a new AD. Per the Commercial Appeal’s Jason Munz: “The committee will consist of Dave North, chair of the Athletics Committee, Board of Trustees and executive chairman of Sedgwick; Lynda Black, Faculty Athletics Representative for the UofM and professor at the UofM Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law; Michael Cook, Chair of the UofM’s Campaign Committee and founder and chairman of SouthernSun Asset Management; Willie Gregory, director of global community impact at Nike Inc.; Richard Smith, president and CEO, Airline and International at FedEx; and Rick Spell, President of the Auxiliary Services Foundation and president of Spell Restaurant Group.” Timeline wise, the search process expects to progress with “purposeful speed” this summer. Michigan AD Warde Manuel Q&As with the Detroit Free Press and when asked by reporter Tony Garcia about Manuel’s minimum public statements regarding personnel issues within the athletic department, Manuel responds: “We don’t talk about, I don’t talk about personnel stuff outside and I don’t talk about how I’m dealing with people except what I need to say. So, these issues for me are just part of what we deal with. But I’m not going to deal with it in public either. Because, A. If it deals with a student athlete it depends what I have to say about it, or if it deals with a staff it depends on what I can say about it. So, just because I don’t make comments and tell everybody every detail doesn’t mean I’m putting my head in the sand. It’s just not the case. … I don’t know about you, but if your editor had an issue with you I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see it on the front page of the Detroit newspapers and social media and everything else. So why am I held to a different standard than what people expect at their own jobs? People have rights in other words and people have a right for me to have private, confidential conversations with them and only have to speak to what I need to speak to publicly, without disclosing everything we discuss.” Manuel says he “handled it” with his son, who lent his car to Men’s Basketball student-athlete Zavier Simpson who crashed the car in 2020. Manuel also explained the reason it took three months for the investigation into the hockey program was because “it’s an issue of process and going through it” and it takes time to review. That review ultimately led to the dismissal of Men’s Hockey HC Mel Pearson. When asked how he explains the multiple incidents within the football program since last January, Manuel: “Because of decisions that people made themselves and that we dealt with. I mean, the vetting process has adapted and changed, yes, because of some of those things. But in four of them, or two of them I should say out of the five, there weren’t any issues with background or any issues that popped up. We found out about things after somebody was hired, then found out about after an incident and we have corrected that as it relates to the process we go through with the outside firm that the university has to review.” Lots more. New Arizona boss Desireé Reed-Francois sat down with The Show to cover a number of issues, reiterating there are not expected to be any sport program cuts in Tucson as a result of the financial crunch: “We are going to look at our revenue streams. We are going to look at our expenses, but cutting sports is not the way that we grow and fulfill our commitments to our student athletes. Are we going to make some of our decisions in terms of how we operate? Absolutely. But that's why I'm very appreciative of our global services from colleagues (from EY) and our colleagues on campus and their assistance for helping us identify those ways that we can be, we can be more innovative when it comes to revenue, we can be more aggressive when it comes to revenue. You don't always just grow a business by just cutting.” (link)

Speaking of balancing budgets, that’s exactly what Missouri President Mun Choi expects new Tigers AD Laird Veatch to do in Columbia, with a bit of a caveat: “While we want to make sure that we operate as close to the black as possible, we know that the future of college athletics — if you look at institutional support at all the other universities — it’s going to require more institutional support.” More on the topic from Choi: “As you saw in the last few years, there were institutional investments that were made. I see that as necessary, because they are part of our university. We have about 600 student-athletes that rely on the institution for support, and they bring incredible value to the university. Because of the success of the Cotton Bowl, we expect we’re going to have 1,000 more freshmen this year that are coming to this university — partly, and maybe in large part, because of the football success.” (link)

“We've got to be extremely adaptable. We've got to find a way to generate more resources, which we have. With my fundraising background, we're able to apply a lot of things that I've learned and developed at other institutions and in bringing some of the science of that here.” That’s new Butler AD Grant Leiendecker. The Indy Star’s Akeem Glaspie asks if the “Butler Way” will be compromised as college athletics changes, Leiendecker responds: “Our goal is going to be to continue to attract and retain the people that want to be at Butler for those reasons that are bigger than money... We're not bringing people here for money. All those things that are synonymous with the Butler Way are the reasons why they're coming, but money can't be the reason why they leave. We've got to close the gap on the resources that we're able to offer and provide in a way that makes it harder for them to leave. That's our goal right now. Ultimately, I believe that we're going to attract people for the right reasons and build a sustainable, competitive program year in and year out.” (link)

How does new James Madison AD Matt Roan view a potential Group of 5 Playoff? “I don’t know that I have an opinion on it right now. The one thing about college athletics is that as many institutions as there are and as many ADs and senior associates and deputies, we all tend to know each other. Those conversations about a different playoff probably started in a hotel lobby on the back of a napkin, and then it’s obviously come this far to be what it is. I look forward to starting to leverage relationships inside the league and outside the league nationally to make sure we’re always best positioning ourselves.” (link)

Cardinal House, a group of representatives from each of Stanford’s 36 athletic teams, debated but did not reach a conclusion on the employment status of student-athletes at its Monday meeting. The Stanford Daily reports that at its previous meeting, Cardinal AD Bernard Muir told the student-athletes to begin thinking about what an employment model at Stanford could look like. Beyond employment, the representatives also discussed potential changes involving academic accommodations and NIL. Associate Dean of Academic Advising, Meredith Basil, indicated that talks are ongoing with the school about giving priority enrollment to athletes and recording lectures. These talks follow a joint resolution from the Undergraduate Senate and Graduate Student Council’s to support student-athletes in their transition to the ACC. (link)

Outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith met with Buckeyes Football HC Ryan Day after the conclusion of the season and encouraged Day to be the one to pick up the phone to call donors, not only to help fundraise for facility enhancements and an increased assistant coach salary pool, but also to boost NIL contributions. Smith: “If I call, 99.9 percent of the time they know why I’m calling. But if it’s Ryan, that’s a game-changer.” The Foundation, one of OSU’s collectives, has raised 10x more than this point last year. The Foundation has signed every player on the Men’s Basketball team, and the Buckeyes’ other collective, The 1870 Society, have both hosted events this year with proceeds going to NIL. Stratechery’s Ben Thompson observes the NBA is unlikely to triple its media rights deal as some predicted, but the 2x increase being suggested is “pretty impressive given the shrinking size of the cable base and the NBA’s lukewarm ratings.” The bigger picture, Thompson explains, involves how Netflix’s long-term strategy will impact sports rights writ large. “Basically, I get the sense that Netflix is hunkering down a bit for a slower growth consolidation phase. … Its competitors are seeking to sell the occasional show to get cash to continue funding their streaming dreams; why should Netflix go out of its way to help fund those? The company can be selective with the content it acquires, improve its tech, and bide its time until competing services finally give up on being streamers and accept their role as studios, on Netflix’s terms.” Meanwhile, Thompson continues, Netflix’s competitors “haven’t thrown in the towel yet, which, by extension, means the NBA is still valuable, because tentpole sports still make the core business models of these bidders work – and you need a business that works if you’re going to continue incinerating cash on streaming.” For Warner Bros. Discovery, this means that if “TNT is going to be a sports network with commensurate affiliate fees (and build up its sports streaming tier and provide its share of value to that new sports bundle offering), then I suspect it needs more sports, not less; giving up the NBA just makes those other rights deals that much harder to pay for, particularly on the back end. To that end, this definitely does feel like the last hurrah for this type of sports rights deal: if Warner Bros. Discovery picks up this deal then I assume it is with the goal of its direct-to-consumer business being able to stand alone by the end of it; if it can’t, well, then Netflix will be ready to buy Warner Bros. Discovery shows on their terms.” (link)
