Outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith says he believes a House v. NCAA settlement will happen “in the near future, and we will revenue-share,” although he does not believe student-athletes will be classified as employees, at least not yet. “I don’t think it’s gonna be like employees in the near future. I think that’s always gonna be on the table because of lawsuits and things of that nature, and I hope it doesn’t get there.” More from Smith on the House case: “Right now, the plaintiffs, their position is that student-athletes should receive 50% of the ticket sales, sponsorship and media rights. … That changes things big time. We’re fortunate they are looking at all schools, so having certain schools in that calculation – if it was just Ohio State, it’d be more money, but when you look at the aggregate, there’s an average. And I think it’s gonna be settled, and we’re gonna be looking at some new model for how student-athletes are compensated. … I think the biggest thing that people need to appreciate about it is the intercollegiate athletic model is going to change. And I’ve always told my teammates, you have to embrace change or be irrelevant. And so figure out how you’re gonna embrace it. And then be a part of that change.” (link)

OSKR’s Andy Schwarz shares some thoughts on the Government Accountability Office’s recent college sports gender equity report. He notes the formula for calculating the participation ratio is straightforward: “You look at the undergraduate M/F ratio and compare it to the athletic department M/F ratio and if it's out of whack, then so too is this prong of this requirement of Title IX. But as GAO makes clear, this doesn't mean you are out of compliance with Title IX; rather, meeting any one (or more) of the [three] prongs suffices for compliance. … Now, as anyone who knows anything about higher education in America could tell you, education is increasingly becoming female. Fewer boys, relative to girls, go to college after high school.” Schwarz argues that it’s “virtually impossible to have a robust athletic department that includes a football team and also meet a M/F ratio like UNC Chapel Hill, which is around 60% female as an undergraduate student body. (and also impossible to meet other Title IX reqs).” Meanwhile, Schwarz notes there’s no data field for "making continuous progress" in the EADA database nor is there a standard measurement to quantify the progress. “So yes, nice that GAO confirmed what any person with so-so data skills can extract from EADA data. Also cool that they made up a test for prong 2, though whether it's the right test or not is unknown. But there is no evidence of noncompliance (on the participation test) here. There is only evidence that schools are REALLY hanging their hat on Prong 3. (Or on Prong 2 being more lenient than 12 years to show improvement). That's the headline here. At least vis-a-vis participation.” Lots more. (link)

Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban has released a statement concerning the use of his words in a pro-UAW ad: “I recently learned the United Autoworkers (UAW) union has taken the liberty of featuring my comments in advertisements released as part of its campaign to organize workers at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. (MBUSI). Not only were these comments taken entirely out of context, they were also being used without my knowledge or permission. I do not personally endorse the UAW or its campaign and have asked the UAW to remove any advertisements featuring me from circulation. I encourage all Team Members to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election.” A pro-union group had been using Saban’s past comments on unions for college football players in a series of TV and radio commercials. + Want to work at Tarleton State? Texans AD Steve Uryasz joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to outline two key openings on staff: the Senior Associate AD/CFO and the Senior Associate AD for Development. Uryasz also talks about his own decision to come to Tarleton: “After spending time at four other Division I institutions, it was really fun to think about building a program, making that transition to DI – full DI – and putting student-athletes in an opportunity to be successful. … I know the landscape of college athletics has changed a great deal in the last few years, but we can't forget what the fundamental goal is and that's to educate student-athletes so that they go on and be productive individuals. I always tell them my goal is that they graduate from Tarleton State University, go out and make millions of dollars, and donate half of it back to us.” More from Uryasz on Connect. (link)
+ Also, Kent State Assoc. AD for Compliance/Deputy Title IX Coordinator Phil Tizio joins Eargle to highlight the vision for the department’s Assistant Director of Compliance role and discuss what current projects the new hire will support, how the reporting structure is set up, what experiences he’s looking for in candidates and the culture at Kent State. Tizio says it’s important for candidates to be comfortable serving as part of an “approachable” compliance department. “We get out, we walk around, we go to practices. We have great relationships with our coaches here. So, someone that’s going to help us in that goal and in that aspiration we have to be approachable with all things – the good, the bad and indifferent. We're here to solve problems. More on Connect. San José State Deputy AD for External Relations Scott MacDonald sits down with Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to share details of his career trajectory and offer insight into how he transitioned from a career in Communications and Sports Information to overseeing all External Units at SJSU. MacDonald, who spent time outside college athletics working in Minor League Baseball, discusses the evolving definition of fit, how to push out of your comfort zone and how he takes advantage of a two-hour commute. MacDonald on how his definition of fit has evolved over time: “Fit has really changed over the years for me. So, my fit now is family because I believe with my experience I can fit into any organization. So, it's really about family. Location is very important…and can I be successful there with my skill set? I think that's very important. I'm not going to take a job at this point in my career where I don't think I can go in and make a difference and improve that student-athlete experience and take that university to the next level.” Additionally, MacDonald notes being able to attend his children’s events and be present with his family “would be [important] when I talk to a president about whenever maybe I get the opportunity to be an athletic director. That’s always going to be front-and-center.” More in the latest edition of The Career Hustle on Connect. (link)

Following Boise State Football HC Spencer Danielson’s recent comments about NIL money for freshmen, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown notes: “Setting aside the uh, problematic optics of how this point was made, it’s not uncommon, and probably smart business, for schools similar to Boise State to not offer much in the way of guaranteed collective payments to true freshmen. Boise State is one of the best programs outside the P4, and the school rarely signs a top 300ish HS prospect. … A school like Boise is not going to have a $12M payroll to work with for their roster. Schools need to decide how much money they want to pay high school recruits, how much they want to pay current players (ideally to keep them from transferring elsewhere), and how much they want to pay potential transfers.” Brown goes on to observe that Danielson’s comments demonstrate the complications of talking and writing about NIL. “If we all use the same term to describe ‘trading card group license money,’ ‘sponsored Instagram story money’ and ‘booster-driven fake salary money,’ athletes, parents, agents and coaches are going to get confused. And in that confusion, there’s risk of people getting hurt, or at least, making poor decisions. So no, the first-year head coach isn’t banning NIL for his first-year athletes. But the fact that a reasonable person could think that he was speaks to why this industry and process needs to be communicated better.” (link)

EA Sports is considering putting ads in its traditional AAA titles, including, presumably, College Football 25. EA CEO Andrew Wilson: “Advertising has an opportunity to be a meaningful driver of growth for us. … We have teams internally in the company right now looking at how we do very thoughtful implementations inside of our game experiences." Extra Points publisher Matt Brown: “I realize I'm very much in the minority about this, but not only do I think this doesn't have to automatically be a terrible thing for consumers, but it could be a real benefit for the college sports industry. *Thoughtful* digital ad real estate can be new inventory for college sports MMR companies AND potentially help decrease investor risk in making other college sports properties. But of course, the devil is very much in the details/executions. Bad ad experiences are TERRIBLE.” (link, link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy outlines a memo sent by NCAA Managing Director of DI Jenn Fraser to the DI Council & DI Board of Governors in late April that included talking points for engagement with Congressional leaders on areas where the NCAA “could use congressional help.” Included were enhancing student-athlete welfare, improving NIL outcomes for college athletes, protecting college athletics as a broad pathway to education and opportunity, protecting Title IX and women’s sports, plus competitive fairness and effective government. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez comments: “I’m optimistic that President [Charlie] Baker has done the work and people have a greater understanding of the conflicts and issues and how nuanced they are. I also feel optimistic they would be in favor of some type of protection proposed by President Baker, but right now there’s so much going on, I don’t know if they have the time or the political will to get it done. But two out of three — political understanding and support — is really a much better place than we were a year ago.” Earlier in April at the Men’s Basketball Final Four, Athletes.org co-Founders Jim Cavale & Brandon Copeland met with Power 4 ADs, NCAA reps, media executives & some notable AO athletes to candidly discuss what the future could hold. Copeland: “This conversation was a private discussion for different perspectives to be heard and for everyone to see what’s really at stake here. There’s a number of things at stake here, not to mention the framework of college athletics, which is a dud at this point.” More on the challenges & opportunities of student-athletes as employees. While a House settlement would not solve college sports’ issues involving NIL, the transfer portal and pay-for-play, The Athletic’s Seth Emerson notes that “it’s a key step, as revenue sharing would have a domino effect on NIL and perhaps the portal: Schools directly paying athletes can alleviate donor fatigue. There could be ways to use revenue sharing to convince players not to transfer. And the willingness to even turn to revenue sharing could be a step toward actually getting help from the government.” Emerson also observes that the willingness of administrators to agree to a settlement represents a significant “vibe shift” within the industry. “Power-conference commissioners have been willing to engage, and not just the most powerful two, per multiple sources within the industry: The Big Ten and SEC may be the two richest conferences, but they haven’t been the sole driving force toward a settlement. College presidents generally were the most reluctant, but during the past year there has been, as one official put it, ‘an evolution in thinking.’” Emerson cautions that major changes are not inevitable at this point, “but things are moving, tentatively, in that direction.” (link)

The World-Herald’s Evan Bland chronicles the career path of Nebraska AD Troy Dannen, and gets comments from several folks with whom Dannen worked along the way. Former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby: “He’s a very persuasive guy and he’s very likeable. He builds strong relationships and he will at Nebraska, too. It won’t be very long before he’ll know everybody’s children’s names and what the spouses do and who’s related to who. He’s a very, very good relationship builder.” Northern Iowa Football HC Mark Farley: “He’s probably won a lot of battles he wasn’t supposed to win in his career. He has the tenacity to go after something because he believes he can get it. I don’t know that he thinks he can’t get something done — he has that mindset that he’ll get it done. … What Troy did was build relationships and then carry our story over to the president’s office. He told our story about what was needed to be successful. … He probably has a great an understanding of the big picture of college athletics — of what’s going on, of what the future holds — as anyone around.” Former UNI Assoc. AD Jean Berger: “One of the things I most appreciated about him was he could make a decision. Sometimes in athletics and academics we study things a lot and talk about it and then the study gets put on a shelf. But he would make a decision and then that’s what we would do.” Lots more. (link)

More on the move of Missouri State to Conference USA as reports have indicated the Bears have the backing of an individual donation of $5M to pay the NCAA’s transition fee. FootballScoop also reports “the school has raised $1 million toward a $4.2 million effort to upgrade the football team’s locker room and weight room and has started a push to upgrade the school’s 17,500-seat football stadium.” HBCU Gameday’s Wali Pitt: “While the nuance of the FCS to FBS move can feel complex when you’re lost in the numbers. Missouri State heading to the C-USA provides the clearest blueprint of what it would look like for FCS HBCUs to leap into FBS football in the current landscape of the NCAA.” Pitt goes on to mention North Carolina A&T, Hampton & Tennessee State as HBCU programs that could fit the mold. + A record 31 new HCs were hired this football offseason, while 529 coaches across 134 FBS teams changed jobs, according to 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello. Overall, 35.9% of 1,474 FBS positions changed via new hires or promotions, up from 34.8% during the 2022-23 cycle. This year’s 134 teams averaged 3.9 new coaches on staff, a slight jump from 3.8 last year. Meanwhile, the number of departures for the NFL rose for a second straight year with a record 34 college coaches making the jump to the pros this offseason. That's an increase of 88.9% compared to two years ago. On the flip side, 23 NFL coaches were hired in the FBS, down 4.2% from last year. Within the college ranks, 78 coaches went from the Group of 6 (including Washington State and Oregon State) to Power 4 (+30% YoY), while 74 moved from the P4 to G6. Finally, 141 coaches went from one P4 to another while 97 coaches changed positions within the G6. Marshall HC Charles Huff on the state of affairs: "This next chapter is going to look a lot different than previous chapters. This next chapter is not going to include some of the constants that we've had for many years. … It's not necessarily the quality of life that drives some coaches to the NFL or out of the business. It's the change in the landscape now because of NIL, the transfer portal. Head coaches are now transforming more into CEOs instead of play-callers and football-only guys. You have to be able to wear multiple hats." (link)

CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander gets additional details surrounding Creighton’s men’s basketball squad switching from the 2024 Battle 4 Atlantis to the Players Era NIL event in Las Vegas. “Sources clarified that Creighton will not be bought out of its commitment to Battle 4 Atlantis by Players Era organizers. The Bluejays pursued the Vegas event in recent days—not vice-versa—and Creighton has to pay its own way out of the Bahamas.” (link)

Tarleton State joins more than 50 other institutions and will partner with Collegiate Sports Connect to boost its talent networking, identification, recruitment and acquisition processes. Texans AD Steve Uryasz: “Tarleton State University (TSU) Athletics becomes a full member of NCAA Division I effective June 1, 2024. TSU is committed to providing student-athletes with an experience that is second-to-none not only in their chosen sport, but the classroom as well. To meet our goals we must actively seek candidates that will build upon the existing foundation while at the same time embracing the ever changing landscape of college athletics. The relationship we have established with Collegiate Sports Connect provides us with the opportunity to target candidates that have the professional experience and education necessary to guide us to the next level.” (link)

Good Lawd the SANDERS boys are exercising all the gifts that GOD gave them and having fun living this life that we only get 1 shot at. The New York Times announced that it added 210K digital-only subscribers to end Q1 2024 with an adjusted operating profit of $76.1M. That amounted to a 40.9% YoY increase and was driven mostly by digital subscription revenue growth. Now with 10.55M total subscribers across print and digital, the goal is to grow that number to 15M by 2027. While the NYT saw a decline in overall ad revenue, digital advertising was up 2.9% thanks in part to The Athletic, which had 4.99M total subscribers by the end of the quarter, up 1.72M YoY. Revenue was also up 33% to $37.2M during that time, but the site still lost $8.7M during the first three months of the year. For comparison, in Q1 of 2023, The Athletic lost $11.3M and in Q4 it lost $4.4M, but “the company remains resolute that The Athletic is on the road to profitability.” (link)
