Northland’s Board of Trustees have approved a refocused model which will allow the institution to remain open. Chair Ted Bristol: “To save Northland, we needed to significantly reduce the deficit in the short term and develop a compelling, financially feasible and sustainable model for the long term. Achieving this was an iterative process that included reviewing all ideas including the submitted faculty ad hoc proposal, validating them against the budget, and refining as needed to arrive at a workable plan. Now we need to execute on this plan … It is not lost on us that today’s announcement could have gone a very different direction. Many colleges like Northland are being forced to make difficult decisions, and we’ve seen many closures in recent years—even in recent weeks. We feel fortunate to be sharing a path forward despite the realities of declining enrollment and rising costs.” President Chad Dayton: “Today’s news is thanks to the incredible work done by faculty and staff in a very short amount of time. Together with the Board, a plan was built to keep Northland College open and serving students in a way that is aligned with our mission and the values that define us. I am immensely grateful to all involved for securing the future of this incredible College.” As of now, the College plans to scale back from 29 currently-offered majors to just eight starting next academic year, while operational budgeting changes and faculty adjustments will help save approximately $7M.  (link, link)

Linfield names former Major League Baseball All-Star and three-time World Series Champion/USA Baseball Senior Director of Player Development Scott Brosius as Director of Athletics at his alma mater. He replaces Interim AD Doug Hire, who plans to retire at the end of the academic year following 24 years of service to the department. President Rebecca Johnson: "I'm delighted that Scott Brosius will be returning to Linfield as our new athletic director. I know Scott shares our values for student-athlete success, in the classroom and in competition. He will work with me and others across campus to ensure that each and every team, coach and student-athlete has the support they need for success." (link)

Keystone has been warned by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education that it faces losing its accreditation, potentially damaging its ability to continue operating, per WVIA News’ Borys Krawczeniuk. According to a recent letter to faculty, President John Pullo wrote that the commission believes Keystone “is in danger of imminent closure.” While neither Pullo’s letter to faculty, nor a separate letter to students, highlighted the possibility, such a loss of accreditation, with it necessary to assure students’ ability to receive federal student loan money to pay for tuition and expenses, could lead to closing. Pullo’s letters referenced negotiations with another undisclosed potential investment partner to secure the school’s future, after negotiations for the Washington Institute for Education and Research to take over fell apart back in March. Keystone now has until May 15 to comply with numerous requests for information required by the commission before it determines “the date accreditation will cease” and until August 1 to show it has enough money for operations or the commission could withdraw accreditation. Gallaudet Dean of Student Affairs Travis Imel has released a letter announcing plans to shutter the University’s baseball and women’s soccer programs, effective immediately, citing “evolving needs and trends in our student body and sport team viability.” More from Imel: “We understand that this news may be disappointing to many within our community, especially to those directly impacted by the closure of these programs. Please know that this decision was made after thorough deliberation and with the best interests of the university and its student body in mind. While we bid farewell to these programs, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a diverse and inclusive athletic experience for all Gallaudet students. We will continue to support our remaining sports programs and will be making an announcement soon with new opportunities to enhance the Athletic program offerings on campus.” (link) 

Both the NCAA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Rules Committees have proposed “expanding video replay review to include whether a player's foot last touching the court was inbounds on a made shot before time expired … If the player's foot is determined to be out of bounds, officials would put the exact time of the violation on the game clock. However, if the shot is made and time remains on the game clock, a video review would not occur.” The committees also recommended a one-game suspension be added as a result of player, coach or bench personnel ejections that include physical contact or the threatening of referees. All rules proposals will be reviewed by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on June 6. (link, link)

The NCAA has addressed its commitment to prioritizing mental health for all student-athletes by highlighting areas of progress during the 2023-24 academic year. At the forefront was the approval of the second edition of the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices document including “emerging information about the intersection of mental health and sports betting, social media, corruption in sport, suicide contagion, and name, image and likeness. The document also detailed specific considerations for student-athletes of color, LGBTQ student-athletes, international student-athletes and student-athletes with disabilities. NCAA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline: "The updated Mental Health Best Practices reflects the highest standards of excellence and evidence-based practice and of comprehensive and up-to-date guidance on supporting mental health in collegiate athletics. The NCAA recognizes the importance of promoting and protecting the mental wellness of student-athletes, who face unique challenges and pressures in their pursuit of excellence." The NCAA also cited the advocacy and efforts undertaken to better protect student-athletes from the pitfalls of sports betting, in soliciting direct feedback from student-athletes about mental health concerns and in the creation of the NCAA Post-Eligibility Insurance Program, beginning August 1. Coe Men’s Basketball HC Bryan Martin resigns after 12 seasons in charge to pursue an undisclosed DI opportunity. After two years on staff, AC/Junior Varsity HC John Payan has been elevated to serve as the next HC. John has been an instrumental part of the basketball program since joining the staff in the summer of 2022, making an impact on our student-athletes and our athletic community.
