Northern Iowa has named Drake Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Initiatives & External Operations/SWA Megan Franklin as its new AD. UNI President Mark Nook: "Megan has been a key contributor to the renaissance of Drake Athletics in recent years. Her understanding of the NCAA Division I landscape and the Missouri Valley Conference will be immediately beneficial to Panther Athletics. Her longstanding commitment to student-athlete success stood out among a field of very strong candidates. Megan’s vision of how UNI Athletics can compete for championships, while bolstering the profile of our entire university impressed me and the rest of our search committee." Franklin's tenure in Cedar Falls will officially begin next Monday. (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel sits down with the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia to discuss a wide range of topics, including the ways in which the transfer portal contradicts the way the Wolverines approach athletics. Manuel acknowledges it’s more difficult, but “I’m not going to ask the university to remove the standards and expectations they have academically. I’m going to say to our coaches, as I have said, ‘We need to make sure that we’re seeing transcripts ahead of time,’ so that we can make sure we get the quick read to know whether or not that young man or woman can be here at the university. Now, there can be other things in background and application that you find out about, but in a general sense, we have an idea looking at the transcript, in particular a transfer, and how many credits will transfer in right away.” Manuel also discusses the potential of adding women’s hockey and tells Garcia: “We’re doing a feasibility study that should be starting here in the next couple of weeks. We’ve had some conversations with consultants, talked with the NHL already, talked with another consulting firm to see and get a firm who can look at it as holistically as we can. … Ultimately, it’s going to be about what it takes to do it. It’s not so much should we do it or shouldn’t we, the question is what is it going to take? What would the needs be? How can that be measured against how the future lies?” (link)

Outgoing VMI AD Jim Miller Q&As with the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor, who asks whether the Keydets can succeed in football and basketball in the current environment. Miller: “Football, I think they’ve proven that they can ... Basketball, I’ll be honest with you, it’s unknown right now. … In the marketplace we’re in right now, everybody’s trying to get older, and that’s our problem. Kids leaving is not the problem. Everybody’s kids are leaving. … The problem at VMI is it’s very difficult to get transfers in, and so we’re continually competing with freshmen, and that’s not going to work.” As the landscape continues to evolve, Miller is bearish on how things will shake out for VMI’s peer institutions. “For the (schools in the middle of Division I) and below, I can't even imagine a scenario that's going to be beneficial to us rather than beneficial to the big guys. However, I am a person who believes we’ll end up with a more separate (Division I) and that the top guys, the top 100 schools, will separate even more and they'll compete at that level and (other schools) down to the FCS will create another group and will compete. I think the average fan would be shocked at the budgetary differences between those schools that are $150M, $200M budgets and the schools like VMI that are in the $15M, $20M, $25M budget range. It's just a different world completely.” (link)

More on College Football Players Association Executive Director Jason Stahl’s idea for a new college sports model in which student-athletes would not be employees but would be able to collectively bargain. He writes: “To get this type of ‘special status’ for college athletes, one which stops short of employee status but gives extensive protections and collective bargaining rights, you would need Congress to enact new legislation. We at the CFBPA now believe that such legislation is worth exploring – particularly after current ongoing antitrust cases against the NCAA, the conferences and the schools are settled in a way that is fair for athletes. … Increasingly, as we talk with current athletes on multiple football programs around the country, there does not seem to be an appetite for these types of legal battles over formal employment, unionization and collective bargaining.” (link)

FootballScoop’s John Brice reports a “coalition is forming among Group of 5 personnel to have a dedicated poll for programs in those five leagues.” The new top 25 poll would include all G5 programs along with independents Connecticut and Massachusetts, and Brice notes that “organizers of the prospective poll believe that a proprietary ranking for the G5 leagues, with every head coach receiving a vote, could spark greater interest in potential broadcasting deals and programming.” Also, per Brice, organizers are “outlining preliminary voting dates – with preseason voting set to begin late July and the Group of 5 Top 25's inaugural rankings tentatively set for release Aug. 1. … Sources tell FootballScoop that the burgeoning movement already has a title sponsor for the rankings.” (link)

Saint Joseph’s AD Jill Bodensteiner joins the Trustees and Presidents podcast to offer a glimpse behind the scenes of how the Women’s Basketball Selection Committee works. When watching a given regular season game, Bodensteiner explains she’s looking to see if they’re at-large material, and that includes accounting for any anomalies. “So, if there is a lopsided loss I can say so-and-so was out, so-and-so was in foul trouble or it was a close game until the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter and the final score is deceiving. Or their star player just had a bad night…and just note their styles. How will they match up against other tournament teams? How will they compete against other tournament teams?” Once the field is set, Bodensteiner explains committee members have the option of following their teams in the NCAA Tournament if they make it. If not, they’re assigned to first- and second-round sites, where they sit in on practices and press conferences, meet with teams and officials and ensure the tournament is being run fairly. “The coolest thing for me is getting to watch how coaches coach, not only in practice but during games. It's just fascinating, and it helps me as an athletic director as well.” More from Bodensteiner. (link)

The Arizona Bowl has a new sponsor and will henceforth be known as the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice by Dre and Snoop. The gin-based canned cocktail Gin & Juice is the first product from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s new premium spirits company, and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes it “celebrates the 30th anniversary of Snoop’s classic debut album, ‘Doggystyle.’” Arizona Bowl Executive Director Kym Adair: “We are a little different from all the other bowls. We’re not afraid to take risks and do things outside of the box. An alcohol brand has always been off the table for us until recently. Everybody in the stadium is drinking a beer or cocktail. It’s time for the industry to evolve.” Snoop adds: “I’ve sent many players through my SYFL to colleges and the NFL so it’s only fitting that I bring the 'juice' back to college football.” (link)

NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances, Playing Rules and Officiating Rachel Seewald sits down with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to outline perspective on changes to playing rules between divisions, whether NIL and social media have or will have an impact on playing rules and officiating and the the growing need for officials throughout the industry. Seewald says technology is a “major point of discussion in every rules committee meeting,” including whether to introduce new technology or expand technology that’s currently being used. Seewald believes ethical conduct could be a major focus moving forward and tells Banker: “We have seen increasing numbers in ejections, unsportsmanlike conduct by players, coaches, so trying to really address that. You want to have a game that people want to watch, and when behavior becomes such that it’s a real distraction, that’s when the rules committees want to step in and really see what can we do from a rule standpoint to address this unsporting behavior that we're starting to see more and more in our sport.” Full conversation on Connect. Kansas City unveils the Roos’ Impact Plan for Excellence to guide the athletic department’s strategic direction. The plan is built on five pillars: student-athlete experience and wellbeing; competitive excellence; brand elevation and community engagement; culture and staff development; and resource growth, facility enhancement and revenue generation. Roos AD Brandon Martin: "Without reservation, college athletics is in a crucible period of both challenge and opportunity. It is imperative that we continue to innovate, have a deeper commitment to our core values and redefine success in this ever-changing landscape. Our Impact Plan for Excellence provides a model to succeed in areas within our control and influence." The plan was developed with assistance from MRJ Advisors. (link)

SBJ’s Bret McCormick profiles 4Topps’ growth from a seating solutions provider to its newly launched consultancy called Seat Revenue Advisors. Through the latter, the company advises clients on how to generate revenue by identifying underutilized or underperforming portions of seating bowls and helping clients flip them into contractually obligated, income-generating premium areas. The company also plans to launch a direct-to-consumer furniture business, selling the chairs it puts in stadiums to its clients’ fans, and has cast a long eye toward the indoor venue seating market, which it has yet to enter. Seat Revenue Advisors can provide financial modeling and potential ROI to customers, as well as renderings that can be used to sell to fans or sponsors, and 4Topps President Deron Nardo says: “We’ve had unparalleled access to conversations and data across college and pro markets. Listening to a customer telling you why something’s working or not working really is why I think we’re the best suited in the marketplace, full stop, to tell people what to do with their seating bowls.” (link)

NCAA SVP for Administration & CFO Mario Morris caught up with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to talk strategic planning, aligning resources with strategic priorities, measuring progress & more. Morris: “Consensus building is listening. The first thing (President Charlie Baker) did was go meet with every single conference. [...] It’s listening. It’s trying to understand where people are, what their challenges are, what they hope for you to be able to do. It’s also being realistic and putting forth a strategy where you can have some wins, some early wins and building upon that. [...] We’ve been able to do that. We got post-eligibility insurance passed for all 500,000 student-athletes where they will be covered for up to two years after they leave school for an athletic injury. That was an amazing accomplishment where he had to build a consensus with all three divisions. I watched that process and was a part of that process. ” Lots more. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann with his latest entry on the potential for collective bargaining in college athletics, notes “It could be years before there’s a wide-scale college players’ union. [...] In short, the timeline for a House settlement doesn’t align well with the broad formation of a players’ union.” One framework comes from College Football Players Association (CFBPA) Executive Director Jason Stahl, who “believes a ‘hybrid option’ that ‘stops short of full employee classification’ but nonetheless supplies athletes with the right to bargain would constitute a pragmatic middle ground. [...] Stahl envisions non-employee bargaining for college athletes as compatible with modern employment trends. He sees the gig economy, with Uber drivers and similar arrangements, as reflecting Americans choosing ‘new types of work lives.’ These lives, Stahl believes, preserve an independent status while incorporating opportunities to ‘collectively’ seek the betterment of working conditions.” More. Fox Sports Men’s Basketball headliner John Fanta gets feedback from head coaches on the state of the industry… One blue-blood HC: “There should be a 30-day portal window, and it should open the week after the tournament starts. We're constantly checking the portal and waiting for it to close while having two, three or four guys in a workout. It's a shame. It's embarrassing and I don't like it. I had a kid enter the portal this past week because he saw that we added another player who plays his position. But that's not to say the new kid was taking our other kid's job. And yet, he wants to enter the portal. You're going to get attrition once you start getting commitments. No kid wants to fight through adversity. Poll the veteran coaches. You should have a poll out there. How many coaches are going to withstand it? How many veteran coaches are going to stick around for this? There will just be another circus next year, and I guess we're the f---ing clowns running around. We need a system immediately.” A Big Ten HC: “The inflation of NIL has gotten out of control.” A Big East HC: “We are in a system of corruption. The third party controls college basketball. Young people are made to believe they are entitled to money. On the surface, that is fine. However, there are no guardrails, expectations or accountability attached. It's a dangerous precedent to set for their respective future and the future of college basketball." One mid-major HC: “The low-major and mid-majors in this are feeder programs. It's really hard to rally university communities around teams with 10 fresh faces every single year. We're no longer running a program. We're just trying to assemble a team year in and year out. That's not what this is supposed to be about." Lots more feedback. (link)

USC Public Policy professor Bill Farley points out Florida State’s financial details for $327M worth of revenue bonds include a noticeable increase in “Membership Fee Revenue” from FY25 ($18.46M) to FY26 ($33.29M), which “can be tied back to The Project Osceola/Private Equity documents.” More: “Private equity partner or not, for these borrowings the FSU boosters have plenty of cash flow to support the bonds. Note the debt coverage ratios highlighted in yellow, which project positive cash flow at over 5X the debt payment. A typical ratio is about 2X.” (link)

Michigan State Deputy AD for External Resources Epiphany Clark sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 PACnet Conference to discuss navigating pressure-cooker moments and why preparation is an essential ingredient in the recipe for success. Clark on her role as Chief of Staff for the president at Baylor and what she learned from that “The biggest thing I learned was preparation. And when preparation meets opportunity that is the best way to find success. Always be prepared. You have to work, you have to grind.” Clark: “Pressure is a privilege… I’m fortunate to have been put in a lot of situations that have afforded me [the opportunity] to understand how to operate under pressure.” Clark and Brown also reflect on the definition of hard work and why resiliency is a key to effectively managing change. CBS Sports’ David Cobb: “The Ivy League has officially become a stepping stone for basketball prospects en route to an NIL payday. … Does a two-year NIL earnings window outweigh the lifelong benefits of graduating from Harvard? That's debatable. But even the Ivy League and its fabled group of academically superior institutions is not immune to the roster poaching that is now the norm in college basketball.” Previously, student-athletes tended to transfer out of Ivy League institutions because the league’s rules didn’t allow athletic scholarships and prohibited graduate students from competing, and while that is still the reason for some departures, Cobb believes many of the outbound student-athletes this cycle made the decision to pursue NIL dollars. “The only constant in college sports is change, and perhaps the 2024 college basketball transfer cycle will be the spark that brings some of that change to the Ivy League's approach on NIL.” (link)
