The Columbus Dispatch’s Bill Rabinowitz profiles outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith, getting comments from a slew of colleagues, both former and present. Since Smith took over in 2005, 127 Buckeye individuals and 35 teams have won national titles and the headcount of student-athletes has gone from 324 to 811. Former Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, who, by his count, worked with 71 athletic directors during his 1989-2020 stint with the league, says of Smith: “There’s no doubt in my mind, that he deserves a place on the Mount Rushmore of college athletics.” Former Buckeyes football student-athlete Joshua Perry: “The thing I appreciate about Gene is that he was around. He spent time with us, got to know us, know our families. I was friends with a lot of athletes at Ohio State, some of them in non-revenue sports. I’d go in my downtime to watch them compete, and I would see Gene out there with Sheila. I thought it was awesome.” Women’s ice hockey HC Nadine Muzerall: “I think his superpower is his ability to connect and make you feel like you’re the most important person, coach or team on campus. … I never saw anyone (else’s) athletic director there. I saw the associate AD or sport AD, but not the actual AD of the school. And Gene was everywhere. He cares. I think that just makes you run through a wall for him.” Football HC Ryan Day: “Every year, our relationship gets stronger. He’s been a mentor. He’s been a friend. He’s been a boss. I would never be in the situation that I am right now without him.” Smith’s last day in Columbus is June 28, after which he and his wife, Sheila, will retire to Paradise Valley outside of Phoenix. Lots more. (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller talks about industry changes with the Lansing State Journal’s Graham Couch: “I don't plan on this (new) system impacting the way we look (as a department). I’ve said it, I'm not an advocate of cutting sports. That's not going to be part of it. That’s when you will look for a new AD. There are decisions that have to be made and they're going to be hard. But we’re going to win in this system with the people we have right now and the student-athletes we have right now. Yes, that's a definitive, and if we have to do something different, then probably new leadership is needed. [...] I'm glad that there's hopefully some type of settling, some finality to what's out there. But I'm not an AD that's like ‘Oh my goodness, the system's going to crumble. What are we doing in college athletics?’ No, I think this is a good thing. This is an opportunity. I want to share into the assets of the profitability.” Haller also notes his biggest fear is a loss of connection with student-athletes: “At the end of the day, we have to do what's best for our student-athletes, but also we have to do what's best for the environment that we're trying to create. And there could be some harm done when there are no barriers around that movement.” More. (link)

New Northern Iowa AD Megan Franklin receives a five-year deal in Cedar Falls worth $220K in base pay annually. Interestingly, there’s no buyout or payout clauses should Franklin & the university part ways. All per CollegeAD. (link)

Memphis Interim AD Jeff Crane joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle for a look inside his path to the Bluff City. They also discuss his role in helping to lead the Memphis Rising Campaign, the construction of a new indoor football facility, tennis center, Olympic sports weight room and nutrition center as well as the current $220M renovation project for Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Crane credits his time as USC Upstate Interim AD as a particularly formative time in his career: “I can't even imagine a better lab or incubator sort of experience for being an athletics director than to go to a place that that has such potential and needed somebody to kind of come in and steady the waters during that time as they went through this transition. [I] was able to hire a new basketball coach there during my time, had significant involvement in the hiring of the athletics director at that time. I just learned so much about being an athletics director and am really appreciative of that opportunity.” Crane on how he evaluates career opportunities: “Sometimes we overthink opportunities. We put too much pressure on ourselves, ‘Are we going to make the right decision? Are we going to do the right thing? Is this going to put me on the right path?’ You make whatever decision you make the right one.” Lots more in the latest edition of The Career Hustle on Connect. (link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Eastern Kentucky is done & ready to assist those of you in the mix. Maine AD Jude Killy on his use of a dossier: “It really helped me consolidate some research. I don’t know how many hours, or days, of research it saved me from finding information to the right links, but it was hours at a minimum and probably a day or two in total.” (link)

Sportico’s Brendan Coffey chronicles the private equity’s involvement in sports, a trend that started in earnest in the U.S. less than 20 years ago. Coffey notes teams have become comfortable with PE’s involvement in large part because “PE firms have gone corporate. … Leagues are comfortable with PE because they have put guardrails around their ownership. No firm is allowed to be a control owner of any North American major league franchise, and in some cases they’re not even allowed to vote. Leagues want to know every investor in the PE fund that wants to buy a stake, so they can veto any deal that includes someone undesirable. And a sale by a PE firm of its ownership stake will usually need to be approved by the league, too. In short, leagues feel they have PE firms entering on team owners’ terms.” Coffey goes on to note soaring team values have piqued PE’s interest in recent years as “growth of North American team values has outpaced the stock market over the past three decades, no small thing considering the U.S. stock market has appreciated 550% the past 20 years.” With several billions of PE money currently invested in sports, that number only figures to increase as the NFL appears increasingly likely to allow PE investment in its franchises and, as Coffey notes: “Florida State University, for instance, has been seeking to bring private equity into its athletic department. If it happens, it’ll open up a whole new sector for PE to explore.” (link)

Gensler Co-CEO Jordan Goldstein talks about the firm’s decision to open an office in Kansas City, telling SBJ’s Bret McCormick: “The epicenter of sports [architecture] talent is in Kansas City. So, it’s really an opportunity to connect with the talent in that marketplace, and no better way to do it than to have a physical space that allows people like [Studio Director] Greg [Brown] and others to join into our firm and be a part of the growth of our practice that really is a globally focused practice with a multi-location approach.” McCormick also notes college athletic departments are becoming increasingly sophisticated in how they commercialize their venues, and Brown, who recently led the design of Baylor’s Foster Pavilion, “will spearhead Gensler’s more focused charge into the space from K.C. The massive changes looming over college sports, including the possibility that student-athletes could become employees, has colleges and athletic departments somewhat anxiously considering their facilities’ futures and the revenue opportunities that could be, and need to be, generated by them.” (link)

Marquette AD Bill Scholl goes with AC/former MU All-American Jake Richard as the next Men’s Lacrosse HC in Milwaukee. Per Scholl, “Jake has been part of every single game the men's lacrosse program has ever played and we are excited to see him run the program.” (link)

Former Texas AD DeLoss Dodds & current Longhorns Executive Senior Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff Chris Plonsky reflect on the impact of the Longhorn Network as the first-of-its-kind effort goes quiet. Dodds: “We were looking at first at doing a conference network, but when you do a conference network, you’re getting only one-eighth or one-tenth of the deal, so you’re part of a group. We decided we wanted something that we could own that could be about us.” Plonsky: “Who could have imagined getting 16 hours of Texas Relays coverage over a weekend. We would have never believed we would get so much for our university, our kids and our coaches. (Dodds and Stultz) saw around the corner with where things were going. They’re so much alike. This doesn’t happen without them.” Former Host/IMG/JMI executive Tom Stultz also played a crucial role: “Had Texas left the Big 12 at that time and gone to any other conference or gone independent, then ESPN would have had a big hole in their coverage in the middle of the country. I think they would say that it was worth what they paid for the Longhorn Network in order to keep the Big 12 together because it gave them content in states with a lot of cable households that they needed.” LHN won’t be lost forever as the Longhorns are set to launch an app on July 1 “that will make globs of LHN content— coaches shows, profiles, documentaries — available on demand.” (link)

In a conversation on the Sporting Class podcast last week, former ESPN President John Skipper explained why he believes Netflix buying rights to two Christmas Day NFL games is just the beginning: “I think it is a very smart deal on the part of the NFL and Netflix. … They’ve been more cautious than Amazon and Apple, but they’re coming. … It’s just the natural evolution. (Netflix) is making money now. He was letting his shareholders know that they were going to not dive into sports while they were losing money. Sports are expensive. Now that they’re making money, now that they’re emerging as the big winner, which they are, they understand that they will need to keep moving into sports. It was a matter of time.” Lots more. (link)

Stratechery’s Ben Thompson in an interview with MoffettNathanson’s Craig Moffett, Michael Nathanson, and Michael Morton talks about the current state of the bundle and observes the bundle was destroyed by the very people benefitting from it. “The studios took all their content, and put it online for some reason. They destroyed the best business model, they destroyed their negotiating leverage relative to the sports leagues, and now they have to pay through the nose.” Thompson notes the “NBA, it looks like they’re getting in under the wire. Probably the last big deal with linear TV, and they’re smart to extend it out 11 years. Who’s going to be bidding on that in 11 years I think is really the open question.” Looking ahead, Thompson believes Amazon is best-positioned for growth in sports: “I think just sports makes sense for them. They’re a habit in people’s lives, they’re the most aggressive, and I think in building out their advertising layer, it is bizarre to me that we are in 2024, and for all these companies, I think they’re finally waking up to the fact that their only potential salvation is advertising, and yet Amazon is the only one that will say ‘Everyone’s getting ads now.’” Thompson says Netflix was “years late to ads, and I think they sort of realized that, to their credit, sort of self-corrected. It’s going to take time to build that up. Ads need scale. What is, if you could buy one single product to get your ad product at scale very quickly, what would you buy? You buy the NFL. Are they going to lose money on it? Probably. Fox lost lots of money on the NFL for years but it was still very useful in actually building up their business at lightning speed to where it needed to be. I think that’s the way to understand the Netflix/NFL thing, and it makes a lot of sense.” Lots more. (link)

@1QLeadership Question: How do schools provide fans and donors transportation to bowl games, NCAA tournaments, and other events?
Kyle McDonald, President of Sports & Entertainment Travel, LLC (SET), talks about providing experiences around athletic related events. While schools transport teams, coaches, and other related staff, many departments outsource the logistics and experiences of the outside constituency.
+ Provide options for travel, lodging, entertainment, etc.
+ Facilitate donor experiences related to giving societies
+ Assist athletics department in identifying quality experiences
McDonald and his business partners started the company in 2014 after identifying a need in the college athletics industry. - - For Father's Day, get your copy of Tye the Dreamer. 🎧 on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, have more details on how a potential House settlement would be paid for as a memo from the NCAA circulated late last week & indicated “an expected $1.6 billion that would come from reductions in NCAA distribution, sources told ESPN. The remaining $1.1 billion is expected to come from NCAA reserves, catastrophic insurance, new revenue and budget cuts, sources said. Of that $1.6 billion, nearly 60 percent is expected to come from leagues outside the Power 5 leagues that are named in the House lawsuit, according to sources. (The NCAA is named, and all of the schools are members.) The other 40 percent will come from the power conferences.” Not surprisingly, some non-P5 leagues are less than enthused with the breakdown with an unnamed leader from a smaller league telling ESPN: “We're not named in the lawsuit. We don't have a voice in any of this. We're just being told what our taxation is.” Another: “This is incredibly unfair and has a dramatic impact. I'm losing about 10 percent of my operating budget. Do I cut two staff members in order for money to go to Zion Williamson? Ninety percent of the money in the suit projects to go to power five football and men's basketball players. The 40-percent payment for the power conference isn't proportionate.” More, including a “Litigation Expense” breakdown chart from Dellenger with lots of financial data and context. (link, link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: “The Football Oversight Committees have approved the proposal to allow unlimited coaches. This would let analysts, QCs coach in practice and games. Still only allowed 11 recruiters. D1 Council must approve it, denied last year. Coaches want this because it's more jobs, esp for young coaches. Some admins are worried about costs and the P4 taking more from the G5. But with lawsuits and player costs coming, perhaps the money won't be there for as many moves. If the unlimited coaches proposal is passed by the D1 Council, expect standalone special teams coordinators, positionless offensive/defensive coordinators and an assistant at each position like the NFL. The NFL, without limits, has around 22-23 coaches.” (link)

CollegeAD reports the Indiana State AD search is down to four with another round of virtual interviews set for next week. William & Mary AD Brian Mann comments on Richmond Football’s move to the Patriot League: “We have been tied to Richmond football for an awfully long time and finding a true rivalry like that is a hard thing to do.” How about the Tribe’s conference positioning? Mann: “We’re proud to be in the CAA. It remains one of the strongest (FCS) conferences in the country. We’ve had some great success over the last couple of years in that conference and we’re going to continue to do everything we can to build strength in it, and use it as a springboard into the (FCS) playoffs and make a deep run, as we did a couple of years ago. [...] What people have started to realize is that the best thing that we can do is let this changing landscape play out as much as possible, and see where the CAA falls, see how we are able to strengthen under this new membership, because there’s just so much uncertainty about the future.” (link)

NCAA Assoc. Director of External Communications Saquandra Heath writes on the impact of the sports betting culture: “Imagine playing a sport you love, giving it your all in every game. In addition, you're balancing your academic studies as you pressure yourself to succeed in the classroom and on the field. If that weren't enough pressure, you also have strangers harassing you via social media, spouting abusive threats because they've lost money based on your performance or that of your team. It's a mental health nightmare. Harassment related to sports betting can cause serious harm to student-athlete mental health and well-being. … That's why the NCAA is advocating for elimination of player-specific prop bets in collegiate competitions.” Heath also shares some statistics: One in three high-profile athletes received abusive messages from someone with a betting interest; 90% of harassment is generated online or through social media; Across the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, 54K+ posts/comments were flagged by Signify's AI for potential abuse or threats and reviewed by human in-house analysts; Of those 54K, 4K were confirmed as abusive or threatening and reported to the relevant social media platforms, with some elevated to law enforcement; WBB players received 3x as many threats as MBB ones. Abilene Christian announces major upgrades to Baseball’s Crutcher Scott Field, which will include “expanded player development, coaching and recruiting facilities, significantly upgrading the home team fan experience and expanding outdoor community space. Upgrades will include chairback seats and shade covering on the first base side.” Twenty-five “lead donors” have committed to the project & all work is expected to be done in time for the 2025 season. McNeese’s Jack Doland Field House weight room is getting a $1.5M renovation and will be renamed the Navarre Performance Center. Freshly minted Green Bay Men’s Basketball HC Doug Gottlieb talks about splitting duties with the Phoenix and Fox Sports: “I think they actually mutually promote themselves. This gives Green Bay something different. It’s going to help our program with NIL money and recruiting. And the other thing is it allows me to take less money and pay my assistant coaches more. But it gives [Phoenix AD] Josh [Moon] and the entire UW-Green Bay athletic department a new kind of publicity. With my connections in the basketball world and in the media, I believe the show is a great way for us to only promote the program.” Gottlieb also acknowledges there’s no way to quiet those critical of his coaching the team and continuing the radio show. “There’s nothing I can say back to them that will make them feel differently. The only thing I can do is build a team, and when we start playing in November, people will see. People will see what we’re about and how hard we play.” (link)

Virginia Men’s Basketball HC Tony Bennett talks about how roster churn added some urgency to constructing the roster for next season: “We knew there was going to be enough players to find who would work out, but no one can say exactly what’s going to work and how you’re going to get players. There’s a lot of stories out there, a lot of things being floated around about what certain kids are getting [in NIL]. Not everything you hear is true, but it is definitely a different time. Everything’s been deregulated, so it does present some challenges.” Bennett says when approaching the portal it’s important to have several targets. “You better have a deep list of who you’re going after. You can say, ‘We’re going after two point guards.’ But you better have six or seven. … We’ve competed, won a national championship…but there’s now different levels of competing. It’s no longer an amateur sport. Everyone knows that, or at least people are discovering that. I like how our leadership has observed and now has proceeded in a sound way. You’ll never align with every one of your constituents, but [I like] how we’re trying to do it aligned with the right things and…being consistent with Virginia’s values.” (link)

Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney doubles down on his position against taking transfers, explaining on SiriusXM College: "There's three types of players in the portal. It's really pretty simple. Most of the guys in the portal aren't good enough to play for us. The second type of guy going in the portal, he's only going in as a formality because the deal's already been done. He knows where he's going before he ever goes in the portal. So we're not getting that guy. And then the third type of guy is going in the portal just to see what he can get. And we're never going to win that war. So we’ve been really fortunate, because first of all, we’re established. Been there 16 years. And we don’t have a lot of attrition. I mean we had 127 guys go through spring ball and 125 are still on the roster after spring, post portal closing. That’s a miracle in today’s world.” (link, link)

Former Florida State/Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher sounds off on the current state of college sports, asserting on SiriusXM’s Off Campus radio show: “I’m going to be honest with you, college sports is the most unfair thing we do. College sports is unfair, and it’s because there’s haves and have-nots. … You think about how it’s set up, each commissioner, and Greg Sankey has done an unbelievable job for the SEC, Big Ten commissioners have done an unbelievable job for them. There’s only so many pieces of the pie, so they’ve taken them and they’ve hurt the ACC and the Big 12 and of course the Pac-12, who ended up folding. I think we have to find a way to come together and get ahead of college football, where everything is balanced. I don’t like the inequities that are going on. It’s not fair, but it’s never been fair. You say the NCAA was the governing body, no it wasn’t because each conference operated with [autonomy] to itself.” Fisher would like to see a model similar to the NFL’s and explains: “If you’re going to go to revenue-sharing, I want a salary cap and I want everybody to abide by that salary cap. That’s what’s got to happen to give the ACC schools and the Big 12 schools a legitimate chance.” Fisher says when he was at FSU, “sometimes when I came back from those [ACC] meetings and I was in a bad mood. I had gotten into it with the commissioner over there trying to tell him this was coming and they wouldn’t listen to me. We got into a couple of knock-down, drag-outs and I was letting [former ACC Commissioner John Swofford] know this was happening.” More from Fisher. (link)
