The Athletic’s Auerbach joins Connect/D1.ticker’s Fischer to discuss the appointment of new NCAA President Baker. Auerbach, who alongside SBJ broke the news: “I think they expected more of a response when they told me the name, but some people had gotten in my ear recently about politicians connected to Massachusetts and had pointed out that Baker was not running for reelection, so it was definitely a surprise, but it wasn’t totally out of the blue like some of these past hires, like the Big 12, Big Ten or Pac-12 hires. [...] But what I have been told about the finalists pool and others involved, this was not an outlier hire. [...] It really points to what the NCAA believes it needs right now to ensure its future looks somewhat like its past or at least the important tent pole items continue to exist.” On what feedback Auerbach has heard from industry sources: “A lot of people think it’s a good hire. There’s a lot of optimism around it. [...] The idea of having someone with a bipartisan background, even though dealing with this Congress is going to be a different thing, but I think people like the idea of someone who is going to be able to build bridges.” Lots more background on the search & what it means for membership. Former Auburn/Ole Miss/Texas Tech/Cincinnati FB HC and current U.S. Senator Tuberville (R-AL) tells Sportico he does not foresee a federal bill passing the next Congress that would include an antitrust exemption for the NCAA. He explains: “We’ve got to take care of all these recruiting possibilities first, and once we get through this we would like to stay out of it. If you get (Congress) involved, it is not a rule, it is a law. We don’t want to jump in this with all four feet and say this is how it is going to be with every situation.” Tuberville, who says he plans to introduce his bill with U.S. Senator Manchin (D-WV) sometime in the spring of 2023, also tells Sportico he believes incoming NCAA President Baker is walking into an “impossible job” and adds: “The problem the NCAA had is they were so vulnerable with lawsuits and couldn’t afford it. It was money going out the door, again and again. We can help to some point, but we don’t want to go overboard on antitrust and all those things.” (link)

Ferris State defended its NCAA DII FB title with an emphatic 41-14 victory, becoming the fourth repeat champion of this century. The Bulldogs have appeared in three of the past four championship games and five of the last six semifinals. (link)

With the NSIC moving to 13 FB-playing members next season, schools are faced with the choice to roll with a mid-season bye or try to schedule a rare non-league game. Bemidji State FB HC Bolte: “We have a really good opponent in Week 5, and we have a good opponent in Week 7. Having a bye in between is a good spot. I’d rather play the game, but we’ve got to look at the criteria of if it’ll help us or hurt us. … We’re doing our best to see if we can get an extra game.” BSU AD Lauritson: “Once you get to the NCAA Tournament, you’re playing folks you’ve never seen before from conferences you’ve never competed against. This gives us an opportunity to go seek out really good competition and give us an early marker of where we are with the rest of the region and the rest of Division II.” (link)

From this month's DII Championships Committee meeting, the committee supported the Softball Championship format change in DII Festival years to move super regionals up a day which would "provide the best championship experience and create the least disruption for student-athletes, coaches and administrators." Also of note: "The committee also discussed an opportunity to provide feedback to Warner Bros. Discovery Sports (WBD Sports) on potential development of a new service that would further highlight Division II and III championships. Members were encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity as well as forward to any interested individuals on their campuses." (link)

The most-recent quarterly filing for Daktronics reflects limited liquidity, about which CEO Kurtenbach notes: “In our 54-year history, we have not been faced with the perfect storm that the last two years represent.” Inflation, supply chain issues and the company’s “lack of varied and flexible financing sources” are factors, as are Daktronics’ investment in expanding its manufacturing capabilities at factories in South Dakota and Minnesota, plus increasing back stock of inventory have slashed liquidity from $61.6M during the past year-plus, to $7.7M at present. Kurtenbach adds: “The current situation is more of a bump in the road for us, and not a dire, company-ending situation. Why we’re in the situation we’re in is the demand for what we do is going through the roof. It’s hard to service all of the demand that’s out there.” (link)
