Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan & TCU once again top the College Football Playoff rankings, followed by Tennessee, LSU, Southern Cal, Alabama, Clemson & Utah. UCF is now your top Group of 5 squad at 20. NC State AD/CFP chair Corrigan on how close the Buckeyes are to the Bulldogs: “I think the committee believes there's been separation with Georgia, but there's still more games to play as we kind of get through the balance of the season.” (link - rankings, link - full transcript); Here’s an updated look at how a 12-team CFP would look after last night’s rankings. Kansas AD Goff discusses the impact the football season has had across the department. “I think it recalibrates the bar. I think it resets the sights so to speak right, it helps people, the entire KU community, understand that football not only can be successful, but can be successful at a high level and can stay at that kind of level of success and I think that’s really healthy for a place that really hasn’t seen that or felt that and maybe has forgotten what football can be.” (link)

Maryland AD Evans talks about the effects of UCLA and USC joining the Big Ten and notes it may result in some creative thinking when it comes to traveling. "Let's say our volleyball program is going out there to play. Maybe Maryland and Penn State -- and I know people don't like Penn State -- but maybe we travel together and one night, we play USC and they play UCLA, and then you flip. So you've cut back on expenses for both institutions, you're taking your program out there only one time in that particular year so that you're going to cut down on the number of times you take your team out there per year, from an academic perspective and from an athletic perspective." Evans also says of the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center: “It’s going to include everything from practice facility to training room, to strength and conditioning to coaches' offices, to locker rooms to lounges. … It's something that's long overdue. Our student-athletes deserve it. Our coaches deserve it. And when you're trying to compete in this environment, we're one of, I think, maybe two or three schools in the country that don't have it. For the rich history of this basketball program, it's something that we must have." $40M raised so far and construction should start next season. More from Evans. (link)

An unnamed University of California regent to the New York Times’ Witz on the looming UCLA-Big Ten decision: “It’s not as if this was a priority of the board: ‘Oh, we want to get ourselves involved in national, high-stakes football programs. All the regents hope a solution falls into our lap so we don’t have to be put in a position to pull U.C.L.A.’s authority to leave or force U.C.L.A. to subsidize Berkeley.” Further, Witz calls the 26-member board “generally a deliberative body. And only a handful of members are conversant in the language of big-time college athletics.” (link)

When asked about it, Aggies Deputy AD/COO Cartwright said on October 10 it was expected to be wrapped up “in the next few days” and that the delay was “nothing on coach’s part.” In a November 9 update, Cartwright: “There were a couple of extra changes that needed to be made. Kentucky Deputy AD Hill talks in detail about the renovations to Rupp Arena with Connect/MB Sports’ Banker. Hill explains working in concert with the city; the benefits of expanding the convention center space, including the ability to potentially host the women’s volleyball Final Four, coaches’ conventions and other events; the more modern feel of Rupp’s exterior, and how perhaps the only silver lining from the pandemic was that it allowed construction to continue without interruptions from scheduled events. “Yes, some of the costs went up on supplies and things like that, but they were able to keep working. And they were able to keep working without a lot of distractions, meaning we didn’t have to halt the work inside the arena or the work around the arena because events were going on. So, without the events going on, they didn’t have to demobilize and remobilize after their larger concerts and things like that.” Full interview now available on Connect. (link)

Virginia AD Williams and FB HC Elliott held an emotional press conference today to address the tragic shooting that occurred over the weekend. Williams explains the Cavaliers will make a decision “soon” about whether the team will play its FB game against Coastal Carolina this weekend. She adds: “Our fans have been remarkable in showing tremendous support. … It is so shocking that you just want to love on our players. That's where we have spent our energy. That's where we've spent our time." On last night’s vigil, which drew thousands of students to The Lawn, Williams remarked: “It was amazing. Remarkable to see the students supporting their classmates. It was healing." In his comments, Elliott remarked that “it’s important that we all grieve. These are outstanding young men, and we don't understand why they're gone so early. … It feels like it's been a nightmare, to be honest. I'm ready for somebody to pinch me and wake me up and say this didn't happen." Regarding the shooter’s background, Williams explained he was a walk-on for one semester in 2018, and she doesn't believe there was any overlap with any of the FB players who were shot. She’s also not sure they interacted outside of the class. More. West Virginia owes former AD Lyons $3.7M, according to WV SportsNow’s Asti, who explains: “The only way for the university to avoid having to pay Lyons is if there is an undisclosed reason for the firing, meaning a violation of the law or willful misconduct. Since that does not appear to be the case, Lyons will be owed the remainder of his contract through 2026.” (link)

The Athletic’s Fortuna submits Washington State AD Chun, Tulane AD Dannen, New Mexico AD Nuñez and LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation President Borman as potential replacements for former West Virginia AD Lyons, adding: “Although it is fair to wonder how turned off candidates will be by Lyons’ treatment. … Lyons was by all accounts a good AD who, like most before him, was undone by a football hire that looked great at the time but turned out to be subpar. Perhaps Brown wins out and impresses his new boss enough to save his job, but that seems unlikely. Thus, West Virginia will likely be in the same boat as Georgia Tech and Auburn this fall in running searches for both an AD and a head football coach, this time on a much quicker timeline.” (link)

In reflecting on his two years on Rocky Top, Tennessee AD White recalls the difficult situation he walked into, particularly relating to recruiting violations and a looming NCAA punishment. “I told our chancellor early on. That’s kind of what made the opportunity attractive for me. I was in a great place and not really looking to leave, but the opportunity came to rebuild this iconic brand.” With the football team being ahead of schedule, White explains he intends to make sure games at Neyland Stadium remain affordable. “We did a repricing of our stadium and our arena shortly after I arrived, and 60% of our price points in the stadium went down. But when I talk about those prices, I’m talking about season tickets.” White points out the season tickets available for next year number fewer than 5K and says of NIL: “I think it’s great that student-athletes can monetize their brand. I think there are a ton of nonmonetary benefits. We now have a carrot for young people to really be concerned about how they’re utilizing this platform.” (link)

From the UC Regents’ board meeting agenda on Thursday: “As noted in prior meetings, UCLA exercised authority delegated from the President in executing its agreement with the Big Ten. The Board retains the authority to take action to affirm, overturn, or abstain from acting on UCLA’s decision. The considerations around the student-athlete experience, financial impacts, and legal risks vary with each of these options. Specific considerations carrying financial or litigation risk will have been discussed in the noticed closed session discussion item.” The agenda also notes several additional costs associated with UCLA’s move, including travel ($4.62M to $5.79M), nutritional support ($2.927M) and academic support ($1.036M). Full rundown, including results from a student-athlete survey. (link); Saturday’s UCLA-USC matchup at the Rose Bowl is sold out, per the LA Times’ Bolch who reports the 70,865 purchased tickets include 16,700 by UCLA students, the biggest student section in the history of the school. LEAD1 CEO McMillen unpacks what the midterm elections mean for college sports and tells SEC Network’s Finebaum that it’s likely a federal solution to NIL is not on the horizon. The problem, he explains, has more to do with Democrats’ desires for expanded protections, including possible employment rights and collective bargaining for student-athletes. “And that’s an impasse, and so it’s really hard to get a compromise there.” As such, McMillen asks why the NCAA and the conferences “come to grips with this? There are ways they can deal with some of this, but the road we’re heading down is a road towards full payola, paying athletes really without regard to their publicity rights, and I think that’s a slippery slope for college sports.” (link)

On3’s Wittry examines the impact of consolidating the five Texas-focused collectives into the Texas One Fund, and former Clark Field Collective CEO Shuley, now of the Texas One Fund, says the biggest win is streamlining all of the overhead, including the funds dedicated to accounting and attorneys. As far as the collective’s finances themselves, Shuley remarks: “I think there’s a time for that but we won’t share numbers yet. I think you’ll start to see more of that in the future. It’s an impressive number of what’s already happened and what’s going to happen, I think, is the best way to say it. You know it, the second that somebody throws out a number, everybody picks it up and it goes crazy everywhere and I think we wanted to focus on getting it right and doing this the right way.” (link)

The Athletic’s Wasserman asserts it’s time fans accepted that NIL is part of college sports now. In discussing highly touted QB recruit Rashada’s recent decision to switch his commitment from Miami (FL) to Florida, Wasserman writes: “The most hilarious thing to me about this NIL bickering is that when Rashada initially committed to Miami, Florida fans were losing their minds. There were reports that Rashada inked a $9.5M deal to be a Hurricane, and the internet went bonkers. Fast forward a few months, and now the shoe is on the other foot and everyone else is freaking out about what Florida might be offering or that the Gators are cheating. Sigh. Nobody is cheating. They are recruiting in 2022.” (link)
