Mississippi State makes it official, naming Oklahoma Deputy AD for External Engagement and Advancement Selmon as the Bulldogs’ next AD. President Keenum during today’s press conference remarked: “In seeking a new Director of Athletics, we talked with some of the nation's very best athletics department administrators. Kentucky AD Barnhart sits down with Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jones to address several topics from The Athletic’s Tucker’s article yesterday, including the assertion that MBB HC Calipari has secured $30M in pledges from former players for a new practice facility but has been blocked from building one by Barnhart. The UK AD points out the Wildcats have undertaken over $500M in capital construction during his tenure, not even including the nearly $200M in renovations to Rupp Arena. “That’s not in my DNA to turn away help for capital construction. Having said that, coaches all the time offer their help in the fundraising packages, and Cal has offered to help, and he’s done that on multiple occasions to help us raise money, and we work in conjunction with the K Fund. Those are also hopes. When you say you’ve got $30M, you think you can do $30M, those are not pledges in hand.” Barnhart also notes the total cost of a new facility is “probably… $75-80M, so you’re not even halfway home. Even if we had pledges in hand, it’s not going to allow you just to begin [construction].” Full interview. (link)

WDRB’s Crawford points out that, according to the Louisville Athletics Association’s meeting notes, season ticket sales are up by 2,500, bringing in $1.1M in new ticket revenue. Almost 25% of those are past ticket holders returning. Crawford adds: “Also a quick look shows men's basketball revenue down $2M from this point a year ago. That $2M includes decreases in ticket sales, suites and seat donations. Men's basketball also running a bit higher expenses than budgeted -- athletics is devoting more money to recruiting and recruiting travel. Louisville athletic director Josh Heird notes that men's basketball is spending significantly less than it did on recruiting from 2012-15. Heird says department will take a hard look at suite pricing. Doesn't blame drop completely on losing results on court, because a lot of those decisions were made before the season.” (link)

UCF AD Mohajir is the latest to throw his support behind NIL, writing in a letter to Knight Nation: “The ChargeOn Fund will continue as the official fundraising arm of UCF Athletics with tax deductible, charitable donations aiding student-athlete scholarships, sport operating budgets and facility upgrades. In addition to your support of the ChargeOn Fund, we must embrace NIL and ask for your support of The Kingdom NIL and Mission Control to continue our rise to the top of college athletics.” (link)

Iowa will lower the price of football season tickets for the first time since 2011, as 2023 options “will range from $335 to $425. Last season was slightly more expensive, with the season ticket cost being between $345-$450 for the season, based on location,” per the Des Moines Register’s Smith III. Hawkeyes AD Barta: “While it seems like the cost of everything else is increasing, we wanted to not only hold our prices steady but reduce them slightly to recognize the support of the greatest fans in America.” (link)

The Athletic’s Taylor chronicles the recruiting saga of Florida QB commit Rashada, reporting that on November 10, Rashada and the Gator Collective agreed to a $13M NIL deal and adding: “Such a massive pledge is thought to dramatically exceed the Gator Collective’s fundraising level, so the deal presumes assistance from [donor] Hathcock or other Gator Guard donors.” After signing the contract, Rashada decommitted from Miami (FL) and pledged his services to Florida. However, on December 7, Taylor reports Gator Collective CEO Rojas sent a termination letter regarding the $13M contract, “according to a program source close to the situation. There are conflicting accounts about why the deal crumbled and who pledged to pay what. Multiple conversations ensue between donors and athletic department members, including [UF Director of Player Engagement and NIL] Castro-Walker and [Gators AD] Stricklin. Some within the administration are only now getting up to speed on what was promised — the program aiming to keep these third-party NIL dealings at arm’s length.” More. (link)

LSU will increase security at gymnastics meets after fans of Tigers gymnast Dunne interrupted a meet at Utah last week. LSU HC Clark: “We will have security detail with us now when we go on the road and we will be working to create a perimeter around where we get on the bus, where we load.” Additionally, Clark says the student-athletes will no longer go into the stands following a meet. “We've always allowed them to go up there post-meet with their families and interact with them. We want to make sure we still provide them with that time with their families, but there won't be any more going into the stands and there will be a limited amount of time that they can interact with the fans in the stands over the rail and that will be monitored closely." AL.com’s Goodman writes on Jacksonville State’s decision to rebrand to Jax State, which was formally announced earlier in the week. Goodman: “Understandably, Jacksonville State can be confusing for people because Jacksonville is neither a state, nor the first Jacksonville anyone ever thinks about. Cozy Jacksonville, Alabama, is in Calhoun County, and the school there, now officially known as Jax State, is the place where Rich Rod went to start a college football revolution and where musician Randy Owen of the band Alabama majored in English. [...] I can’t help but get more and more X-cited about Jax State’s big move to FBS. Something tells me this fun little school up the woods is going to end up shoxXx-ing the world.” (link)

Sportico’s Libit notes that USA Cheer’s recent acceptance by the USOPC as an affiliate sports organization “was tempered by the NCAA, which decided to table a vote to approve Stunt, a gymnastics-related cheerleading alternative, as an emerging women’s sport for all three of its collegiate divisions. An NCAA spokesperson told Sportico that the association’s Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA) would review Stunt again in the spring, but declined to provide further details.” (Note: Just DI and DIII tabled the vote. DII will vote tomorrow.) (link)

+ The electronic strike zone will be used in all 30 MiLB Triple-A parks in 2023, according to ESPN’s Olney, who calls this “seemingly another significant step toward the implementation of the technology at the big league level in the near future." Bleacher Report’s Rapp explains that in half of the Triple-A games this season, the Automatic Balls and Strikes (ABS) system will be used to determine all strikes and balls, while in the other half, the ABS will be utilized as a challenge system, with teams getting three challenges per game and retaining each successful challenge. MLB Commissioner Manfred acknowledged in October that “I think in one form or another, there's a good chance we're going to be using it at the big league level at some point.” (link)
