St. Francis (IN) has announced the addition of men’s & women’s bowling beginning with the 2024-25 academic year. Former prep coach Jeff Brown will serve as both teams’ HC. AD Mike McCaffrey: We have seen the growth of collegiate bowling, especially here in the Midwest and Crossroads League, so the timing made sense for the Cougars to jump in and start to compete. Jeff Brown is an experienced bowler and has tremendous connections to the northeast Indiana bowling community. The 16th annual Coach to Cure MD (Muscular Dystrophy) begins this weekend. AFCA coaches will wear the Coach to Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines, educating fans about the cause on their social media, and inviting young men battling Duchenne muscular dystrophy to their campuses over the next two weekends. AFCA Executive Director Todd Berry: “Football coaches have been proud to stand with the brave families fighting Duchenne muscular dystrophy and while victory is not yet at hand, we are putting points on the board in the search for this cure.” (link)

The Washington Post’s Kent Babb highlights the role the Madden video games have played in developing a new generation of coaches who grew up refusing to punt on fourth downs, memorizing defensive schemes and calling audibles via their controllers. Central Michigan (NCAA DI) AC Ryan McNamara, who never actually played football but learned the game by playing Madden, got his start by working as a video game tester for EA Sports. He eventually landed a role with Mississippi State (NCAA DI) where he watched Auburn (NCAA DI) film and noticed tells for when the Tigers were preparing to run the “Power” concept. Realizing it was in Madden, he says the solution was also the same and devised a hybrid coverage to counter it. Also, rather than conduct a weekly call with a recruit, he would challenge the prospect to an online game of Madden, then spend the four quarters speaking into a gaming headset about the upsides of signing with the Bulldogs. If you are not willing to adapt or try new perspectives or techniques, it could be difficult conveying your message.” (link)
