JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on the latest from Pullman & Corvallis: “Oliver Luck is consulting with OSU and WSU. He’s typically the smartest guy in the room. A source in Corvallis told me that part of Luck’s pitch last month was a suggestion that they outsource a national public-relations campaign. In fact, Luck thought the schools should hire the same high-profile public-affairs team that worked behind the scenes for President Obama. Most universities have working relationships with crisis-management firms and keep consultants on retainer. They also have in-house communications and marketing teams. Those are great for the day-to-day issues that come up as it pertains to campus matters. But college football realignment is a unique animal. [...] The realignment game being played is nuanced. The stakes are high. What the two folksy schools need this football season is a tidal wave of public sentiment. They have to make themselves difficult to joke about. Their plight is relatable. Their slight is obvious. The masses are waiting to rally around WSU and OSU.” (link)

MAAC Commissioner Travis Tellitocci joins AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on his first weeks in the role, including his journey from professional sports to the conference office. Tellitocci also shares his perspective on issues such as sports wagering, data monetization and media rights before discussing his plans for implementing effective communication with league institutions, building a staff and achieving buy-in and connecting with MAAC student-athletes. Tellitocci notes the collegiate and professional sports worlds are even more different than he thought but says he plans to implement professional-style ticketing and promotional models. “We started doing bobblehead promotions and fireworks nights and a lot of the group sales elements that you saw on the pro sports side the people weren't necessarily doing on the college sports side. … I just went to a Mets game two weeks ago and my former boss took me around again and to see how that has changed – I think we had five people on a crew, they had about 20 people – so the investment’s been made on the technology side. How do we bring that to the conference side? … All 32 conferences are trying to figure out how to set themselves apart so how do we bring some of those experiences to the MAAC?” Full conversation on ADU. Syracuse officially broke ground on its new football operations center at the John A. Lally Athletic Complex. Orange AD John Wildhack: “Today represents a commitment to compete at a national level. It represents a commitment to develop our young men, beyond just the gridiron. The vision of this facility is to provide every team member – and every student-athlete – the ability to maximize their potential academically and athletically." (link)

Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt remains bullish on Football HC Maurice Linguist despite the Bulls’ 0-4 start. “I’ve been around some bad teams. The team here was down and out, and battled to come back with the intention to win the game, and there was an interception at the end. That shows the character of this team. That shows the leadership. So, I have the utmost confidence in Maurice.” (link)

Alabama State has suspended football student-athlete Jacob Freeman indefinitely after Feldman was recorded striking a stadium security guard following the Hornets’ loss to Florida A&M in Tallahassee. Hornets AD Jason Cable: “We do not condone the actions of the student-athlete, nor are the actions representative of the expectations set forth by the athletic department and our university. There is zero tolerance for this type of behavior.” (link)

College football coaches have been talking a lot of trash recently, Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde observes, citing Ohio State HC Ryan Day firing back at former Notre Dame HC Lou Holtz, Washington State HC Jake Dickert taking aim at ESPN College GameDay analyst Lee Corso without fully understanding the context of Corso’s comments, Oregon HC Dan Lanning’s remarks about Colorado and more. Forde: “What coaches love to say: We block out the outside noise. We don’t concern ourselves with what’s said in the media—we don’t read any of that stuff. We only worry about ourselves and control what we can control. What they’re actually doing: listening with rabbit ears to everything that’s being said about them, or about their opponents. And they’re getting legitimately mad about it.” More from Forde. (link)

The Washington Post’s Kent Babb highlights the role the Madden video games have played in developing a new generation of coaches who grew up refusing to punt on fourth downs, memorizing defensive schemes and calling audibles via their controllers. Central Michigan AC Ryan McNamara, who never actually played football but learned the game by playing Madden, got his start by working as a video game tester for EA Sports. He eventually landed a role with Mississippi State where he watched Auburn film and noticed tells for when the Tigers were preparing to run the “Power” concept. Realizing it was in Madden, he says the solution was also the same and devised a hybrid coverage to counter it. Also, rather than conduct a weekly call with a recruit, he would challenge the prospect to an online game of Madden, then spend the four quarters speaking into a gaming headset about the upsides of signing with the Bulldogs. Houston HC Dana Holgorsen: “This generation is different from the last. If you are not willing to adapt or try new perspectives or techniques, it could be difficult conveying your message.” (link)

“An Illinois federal judge won’t let Northwestern University escape the forced labor and sex trafficking claims lodged by a former cheerleader, ruling that she successfully pled that she was required to act in a sexual way to secure donations and that she would have suffered financial harm if she had refused to participate.” More from behind the Law360 paywall. The NFL, MLB and NASCAR are lobbying lawmakers to alter a bill before the U.S. Senate that would loosen flight restrictions over the nation's major stadiums and raceways for the first time since 9/11. NFL SVP of Security Cathy Lanier tells ESPN’s Tisha Thomas: “I’m very worried. Aircraft can be used as a weapon and that is one of the top concerns that we've had for 20 years." Currently, the FAA issues temporary flight restrictions above any stadium or raceway that seats more than 30K people from one hour before the event until one hour after; however, the FAA Reauthorization Act that passed the House of Representatives over the summer allows the FAA to grant a flight waiver within three-quarters of a mile of a stadium during game day. Congressman Sam Graves (R-MO) argues: "It's simply wrong to suggest that existing flight restrictions have any connection to preventing terrorism. It's also wrong that a construction crew wanting to use a drone to inspect a roof three miles away -- just to give an example -- has to wait until a ballgame is over to do their job, or else they're breaking federal law." Instead, the FAA would issue waivers on a case-by-case basis, according to Graves. (link)

Asked to rank favorite basic cable networks, men 18+ most frequently mentioned ESPN (37%), History (23%) and Discovery (20%) while women selected Food Network (29%), ID (20%) and HGTV (19%). (link)

Washington State football HC Jake Dickert continues to rail the moving parts behind realignment after his Cougars defeated Oregon State last night: “There’s a lot of noise out there. I caught something this morning. I was just watching GameDay, and Corso comes on and [calls our game] the ’No One Watches Bowl. I don’t really understand that … Coach Corso, he’s at the point now where they give him the sheet and he reads off of it and they try to make a joke. But it didn’t even make sense. [...] It’s well documented what ESPN has done to try and get our league into where it’s at. I would love to have a conversation with Coach Corso about the value that he sees in breaking up the premier West Coast conference. I would also love to have a conversation with Coach Corso about how he thinks student-athletes and mental health and flying them across the country is a positive thing.” (link); The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner comments: “WSU’s issue isn’t just media value (viewership/market), it’s the combination of geography and media value. Former doesn’t work for the Big 12 and latter doesn’t work for the Big Ten. Perfect storm.” (link)

In a slightly alternate universe, the Pac-12 would be sitting pretty in media rights negotiations, per The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes: “Had the conference’s football inventory been available now, this week, today, there would be no shortage of motivated buyers. Colorado and coach Deion Sanders are the talk of the sport and smashing audience records. The conference has eight ranked teams and the betting favorites for the Heisman Trophy. … Had the presidents remained patient and unified, the Pac-12 would have a media rights proposal on the table that met their requirements for annual revenue and linear television exposure.” Wilner continues: “In the real world, of course, [Commissioner George] Kliavkoff’s strategy was an abject failure. Because in the real world, the presidents were never going to break records for patience. The schools were never going to wade into the 2023 season without a media contract secured for the 2024 season.” Ultimately, the Pac-12’s fate can be attributed to one word, per Wilner: disconnect. “Between Larry Scott and the athletic directors, which lasted years and removed vital institutional knowledge from the Pac-12’s decision-making process on strategic matters. … Between the disengaged presidents and the roiling reality of college sports. … Between Kliavkoff’s media strategy and the needs and desires of his schools.” More. Highlights from Georgia AD Josh Brooks’ comments to the UGA Athletic Association Board of Directors include the Georgia Bulldog Club raising a record $102M in FY23, the ‘Commit to the G’ Capital Campaign has raised $129M of its $300M goal (June 2027 target completion date), a November 2023 phase 2 start date for the south side improvements to Sanford Stadium, a completion date of winter 2024 for the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Facility; winter 2025 for Foley Field upgrades; and fall 2024 for the Jack Turner Softball Stadium. On the academic front, with a 3.20 cumulative GPA, Georgia student-athletes boasted the highest-ever GPA in school history last year and 18 of UGA’s athletic teams finished with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Davidson AD Chris Clunie, alongside Chief Communications & Marketing Officer Mark Johnson, sat down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to review the institution’s new visual identity. Clunie: “There are schools that compete at the highest levels academically & sacrifice athletically. There are schools that compete at the highest levels athletically & sacrifice academically. Davidson doesn’t do either. [...] So in thinking about this new logo, we now for the first time have two logos for all of us. The D-C interlocking and the new wildcat. [...] Before, we had all these different elements & there was a distinction between the institution & athletics. Now we’re intertwined.” Johnson: “I didn’t have the privilege of attending Davidson, but what Chris is describing is something that is special here. Twenty-five percent of our students are Division I athletes. They are not in special athletics residence halls. They are not eating meals separated from everyone else. They’re your roommate, your classmate, your hallmate. That is part of what makes this an amazingly close community.” More, including how Davidson worked with design studio Upstatement, plus the challenges of rolling out the new marks across campus. + SBJ’s John Ourand comments on Fox’s decision to have its announcers broadcast from a studio instead of on site at last week’s Virginia-Maryland game: “Awful Announcing did a good job of documenting it, and they have some clips that are just cringeworthy. The announcers were not aware of who Virginia’s starting quarterback would be. Apparently they weren't sure of who was kicking field goals and extra points for the Terps” and a penalty appeared to completely catch the announcers off-guard. Ourand: “We expect better, Fox should expect better.” (link)

North Carolina Central Deputy AD/SWA Kendra Greene and Howard Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Chevonne Mansfield sit down with Berry College (DIII) AD Angel Mason to discuss the HBCU leadership pipeline and professional development options for women leaders. Mansfield and Greene explain the opportunities provided by membership in organizations such as Women Leaders and talk about the additive value of exploring professional development from outside the sports industry. The duo also share their stories of attending and working at HBCUs and offer advice for young professionals looking to enter the industry. Mansfield explains that when she started out, she was in communications, and “there's not a lot of Black women doing that so I stood out like a sore thumb. I didn't realize until I got older and got more experience in the business that was actually to my benefit. So when I transitioned to administration I already had a nice network from going to CoSIDA and NACDA and now I'm leading our external affairs unit.” Greene encourages women to pursue Women Leaders scholarships and attend the Women Leaders conference and “just really embark on that network because your doors are just going to open up.” Lots more from Greene and Mansfield on AthleticDirectorU. Los Angeles Kings/AEG Sports VP for Ticket Sales & Business Development Ryan Miller talked about the role AI is playing in the franchise’s ticketing process during this week’s AXS DRIVE event. The process starts with leads flowing through a virtual assistant. “We have unlimited capacity to run [leads] through automation. We could pull thousands of businesses on a monthly basis and never run out. We’re turning outbound leads into inbound leads. These are warmed up. They’re ready to have a conversation. You can really focus on your internal talent and invest in your sales talent.” Eventellect Chief Commercial Officer Kate Howard also discussed her company’s AI model, which is used to train pricing analysts and “expert actions” to drive its solutions. “What we’ve seen is (the AI model generating) more reactions to its learnings from the trainings that happened before. It learns and then it reacts later (in time). We’ll see, like, a September game where we’re leading up to playoffs, sales are going to start picking up. The system will independently start to see that and make decisions based on that.” (link)
