Delaware State AD Shields-Gadson sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Brown to discuss issues of access and opportunity for women, particularly women of color, in college athletic leadership, the challenges of displaying vulnerability as a Black woman in the industry, how her concept of self-care and balance has evolved throughout her career and more. In the MEAC, the commissioner and five ADs are Black women, and Shields-Gadson says: “When you think about the progressiveness of a MEAC, the progressiveness and forethought of our CEOs and presidents saying we know these women are ready, we know these women can lead a program, I think that’s going to catch on. … I think we’re not a quietly kept secret. We’ve been here, and I think it’s just now that we’re given those opportunities. So, we’ve had access when you think about some of those roles that tend to develop us…but now we’re given the opportunities.” Lots more. (link)

LEARFIELD President for Digital & Technology/Paciolan President Damron and SeatGeek co-founder D'Souza join D1.ticker/Connect's Garcia Cichosz to share details of their recently-announced secondary ticketing partnership. Damron and D'Souza discuss the significance of the partnership for both entities and how it will impact the data, analytics and marketing reach for Paciolan's collegiate clients. Damron: "One of the most appealing things about SeatGeek was they have the largest percentage of Gen Z buyers than any other secondary ticketing company - so that coupled with Paciolan's season ticket base, our student base, [it] adds a huge complimentary demographic to our already big [consumer base]. ... according to LEARFIELD's Fanbase report, college athletic fans are the largest and most affluent fan base in the country." Here’s the latest from JohnCanzano.com’s namesake on potential Pac-12 expansion: “I’m told by a Pac-12 source that commissioner George Kliavkoff met with San Diego State athletic director J.D. Wicker in December. [...] The investment and strategy at San Diego State reminds me of what Utah wisely did in front of the move from the Mountain West to the Pac-12. The Utes have now won back to back conference titles in football. [...] Las Vegas has ample gaming sponsorship opportunities for the conference. It includes an NFL stadium. If the Pac-12 is looking to make a speculative bet, Las Vegas (and UNLV) is the place to do it. [...] I don’t think Gonzaga adds $30+ million in TV value and expansion is about adding value. For that reason, if the Zags do leave the comfort of the WCC, I see them as a more desirable fit for the Big East or basketball-heavy Big 12. [...] The Big 12 feels like a much more likely partner for Fresno State. [...] SMU is private and ranked No. 72 nationally among universities when it comes to academics. That should be acceptable in the eyes of the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors. Still, there’s a larger philosophical question at play here: Does the Pac-12 lose its identity if it takes a Texas school? [...] The Big 12 feels like the far more likely partner for Boise State. [...] The timeline for any of this? Soon.” (link)

ESPN College GameDay analyst/popular podcast host McAfee posts a pensive tweet about his future, writing in part: “We’ve really been quite a f***ing disruptor in this whole daily Sports Media world. I’m very proud of it. We don’t have producers giving us takes or researchers telling us what to talk about. We don’t have any investors. We don’t have a ‘lead in audience’ or ‘people leaving their TVs on overnight.’ We, alongside our incredible fanbase, built this thing both literally and figuratively. What’s next though? A LOT of fun to think about. Show will always be free but we need to keep evolving. … We and the new group of [FanDuel] execs don’t necessarily have the same philosophical views on stuff, nothing but love for them, they are doing their thing but, certainly a different way of operating these days.” (link)

+ Yahoo’s Nguyen profiles USC WBB HC Gottlieb’s season, during which she has guided the Trojans to a 21-8 record while also caring for her three-month-old daughter. Gottlieb: “To be able to do both at the prime of my life, it’s something that I don’t take for granted. It’s also because I have incredible people around me allowing me to do it. … We’ve put ourselves so far in position [for the NCAA tournament] and that was always the goal. Just because I’m having a kid, I’m not going to take any of our sights off the goal.” While interviewing for the job in 2021, Gottlieb was clear with Trojans AD Bohn that she wanted to find ways to integrate her family into work. Bohn had no reservations: “It comes down to trying to make sure that our coach has support, has the encouragement from the administration that hey, everything’s going to be great. Having children around our elite athletes and around our institution as a whole is a great blessing." (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Mendoza earlier this month ruled that esports does not count as a sport for the purposes of Title IX, citing among other cases Biediger v. Quinnipiac University, where in 2012 the U.S. Second Circuit upheld a district court ruling that competitive cheerleading did not qualify as a sport. Its reasoning was that there was no favorable Office of Civil Rights presumption for competitive cheerleading since the NCAA doesn’t sanction it. Mendoza concluded that competitive cheerleading is a “close call” for recognition as a sport, but “the same cannot be said about esports.” Mendoza, Sportico’s McCann notes, underscored that “while competitive cheerleading is physically challenging and requires competitors to have strength and agility, ‘esports does not require athletic ability.’” More. Florida A&M anticipates spending $450K for the Marching 100 band to travel during the 2023-24 academic year. The Tallahassee Democrat’s Jean reports roughly $175K will be used for the band’s trip to the Florida Classic against Behune-Cookman in Orlando, over $100K will be used to travel to the USF game and about $175K will be spent to travel to Southern. Trustee and former Rattlers FB student-athlete Cliatt contends that “if we’re going to play in a classic, yes the expectation is that the '100' will be there, but the expectation is not free. The expectation needs to be rolled into the contract automatically.” (link)

Bayer contends he placed fewer than 20 wagers on MLB games, including two on his organization (Oakland Athletics), in July and August of 2020 through legal sportsbooks, a period of time when his minor league season was canceled. The league’s investigators say he placed 100+ bets from May-August that year, including at least 12 involving the Athletics and at least 25 wagers of $1,000+. (link)

Sports Attorney Winter offers his opinions on the NCAA penalties handed down to Miami (FL) for the recruitment of then-Fresno State WBB student-athletes, the Cavinders: “Although Ruiz wasn’t disassociated in this case, the COI sent a message to other boosters and collectives that it will strongly consider disassociation penalties in future NIL-related cases. It remains to be seen if this will have a chilling effect on interactions between collectives and recruits, but, in combination with the new NIL rules charging standard, I’m sure it will lead to schools having conversations with collectives about the importance of adhering to the NCAA’s NIL policy.” Forbes Dosh asks what if a collective was at the centerpoint of the impermissible contact. Winter: “I think the entire collective would be disassociated as an entity since the NCAA has clearly stated collectives are considered boosters. The owners or operators of the collective would probably also be disassociated. If not, they could easily create a new entity to get around the disassociation of the collective.” (link)
