NCAA VP of Academic and Membership Affairs Schnase sits down with Connect/MB Sports’ Banker to discuss challenges facing the membership, including the transfer portal, waiver changes, NIL and more. Schnase says as of right now, “transfers are at a place of stabilization. So, we’re trying to find that even keel where we understand what the rules are, understand what the implications are, to see how that impacts, ultimately, graduation.” Schnase also says the NCAA has heard “loud and clear” from students that mental health support is a priority. “We need to make sure we’re paying attention to that, and if there’s a waiver avenue for mental health reasons, we need to pay attention to that.” On the topic of NIL, Schnase says one misperception is that members are asking interpretative questions when, in reality, their questions focus more on the landscape overall. “People don’t understand exactly what is happening with NIL across the country. Some people may say they have a good idea. We may see pockets of good information, but from a national, comprehensive standpoint I don’t think we really understand what’s going on.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

Saint Leo will discontinue Men’s and Women’s XC/T&F and Men’s and Women’s S&D at the end of the spring semester. AD Reidy: “As evidenced by our Mayor's Cup trophies, LEARFIELD Cup finishes, and NCAA appearances, Saint Leo has provided a broad-based athletic program. However, we cannot provide the necessary support to all our current programs. The university is committed to providing a great student-athlete experience for our student-athletes, but will need to do so with a smaller number of teams.” 72 student-athletes and four staff members will be impacted. The NCAA has released new dashboards showing DI and DII transfer data for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years. DII data shows 10,324 student-athletes entering the portal with 3,033 finding another home, which was up from 2,413 the previous year. This leaves 70% of those who entered the portal in “Active” status, meaning they are still looking for another school, exited their sport or transferred to a non-NCAA institution. FB reported the lowest percent of student-athletes finding a new home with 25%, with Baseball, MBB, MSOC, MVB, Softball and WSOC all reporting under 30% of student-athletes landing at another NCAA institution. Of those who found a new destination, 60% remained in DII while 34% moved up to DI and 6% moved to DIII. By sport, Men’s Golf, Track & Field and Women’s XC produced the highest percentage of movers to DI, with over 50% of DII transfers moving up. Transfers into DII members came largely from DI with a total 56% moving down. For undergraduate transfers, 80% of those not receiving aid from their previous institution are still in the portal, with 8% finding another school and receiving aid, compared to 69% and 22%, respectively, for those who were receiving aid at their previous school. Kentucky State names McNeese State (DI) FB AC Huggins as HC. KSU AD Johnson: “Several qualified candidates were interested in becoming the next head football coach at KSU. Still, none of them had the depth of experience, energy, knowledge and the ability to connect with our student-athletes like Huggins. I’m confident that his knowledge of our conference and the current football landscape will make our program highly competitive while helping our student-athletics lead with high character.” (link)

The NCAA Board of Governors Student-Athlete Engagement Committee and DI, DII and DIII SAACs pen an open letter to all student-athletes regarding mental health which reads, in part: “Mental health struggles can occur with a wide range of severity, depending on the impacted individual. While an individual's mental health status is personal, treatment and support are a community effort. As such, it's encouraging that there has been an increase in support from student-athletes, administrators and athletics staff in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and dedicating effort to improve support systems. … As part of its continued work to provide recommendations for supporting and promoting student-athlete mental health, the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports commissioned a Mental Health Advisory Group and charged it with reviewing and updating the existing Mental Health Best Practices. Moving forward, the Association is committed to creating well-informed recommendations and education efforts to support student-athletes on every campus. We want to challenge campuses around the country to take action and be proactive in implementing the forthcoming recommendations. As change begins to take place, the student-athlete voice should remain involved in all conversations.” Full letter. (link)
