Big Chair Changes:

+ Barry AD Covone will retire at the end of June after 39 years in Miami Shores and a quarter-century leading the Buccaneers. President Allen: "Mike Covone is an exceptional leader, who has dedicated his life to helping student athletes achieve their full potential on and off the field. We are deeply grateful for his service and commitment to Barry athletics, and his legacy will endure for generations of student athletes to come." (link)

+ Colorado Mesa appoints former MSU Denver/San Francisco (DI) AD McDermott as Interim AD. CMU President Marshall: “She brings a winning record with decades of experience, and more importantly brings an authentic emphasis on student-athletes that is exemplified over her entire career. Joan's heart is in Division II athletics, and we're thrilled to make her new university home Colorado Mesa University, where her love of supporting student-athletes and transforming them into future community leaders matches her desire to win.” (link)

NCAA President Baker joins NCAA correspondent Katz to discuss his priorities, the balance of handling different institutions, navigating the Power 5, working with committees, NIL, student-athlete mental health and more. Baker reiterates his call for more transparency around NIL, explaining there is more the federal government and the NCAA can do to establish standards. “For example, there probably ought to be uniform standard contracts, you probably ought to have to register your contracts, you probably ought to have to get certified to be an agent. … And, boy, I’ll tell you, the noise coming from the schools about the lack of any accountability or transparency around this is pretty intense.” Baker says of the NCAA’s role in mental health that the organization can use the momentum around the topic to drive more “distributable capabilities out to people, and I think that’s a big role we can play. And we can be a convener of a lot of the best thoughts and the best thinking on this and then push it out and make it available to people.” Full interview. (link)

D3Hoopsville’s McHugh reports, via Nichols (DIII) MBB HC Erickson, that the Bison intend to transition to DII “sometime in the next few years,” but will be in DIII at least for 2023-24. (link)

Following Fort Lewis MBB earning the 2-seed in the South Central region, the RMAC “submitted a letter to the NCAA DII Men’s Basketball Committee outlining concerns involving tournament selections and seeding. We object to their decision to replace Fort Lewis College as the top seed in the region, a position that they rightfully earned.” (link); Colorado School of Mines AD Hansburg takes to Twitter to speak out for his conference brethren: “Sadly, the integrity of this regional championship has been taken away from all 8 teams who are participating. Kudos and thank you to the RMAC presidents for speaking out!” (link)

A bylaw proposal for this month’s NAIA Convention would permit NAIA coaches to contact student-athletes at non-NAIA institutions and initiate contact regarding transfers. (link, link)

Peach Belt Commissioner Brunk joins Extra Points' Brown from the 2023 NCAA Convention to discuss his growing conference, eSports, industry issues and much more. On the growth of PBC eSports: “What sets the Peach Belt apart from any other conference that is in the Esports realm is the fact that of course we have competitive schedules, we do challenges with other conferences but if you're a part of Peach Belt Esports, we have an in-person championship for each one of the four games that that we sponsor. So if you're in the top eight in each one of those, you qualify for the championship. One of the prerequisites for being part of PBC Esports is that you are in attendance at the venue. We run it just like we would our Men's and Women's Basketball championship. Everything's the same from the awards, the Branding, the hospitality, the participant gifts and different things like that. […] We want to continue to grow that. It's such a great enrollment driver sure and in this day and age in DII, DIII, even DI I know schools are struggling with enrollment. You get those STEM students in and I just hope that presidents and chancellors would really see the big picture with that and what sponsoring a good varsity Esports program could do for an institution.” More only on Connect. + Dick’s Sporting Goods is the newest corporate partner for the NCAA, per SBJ’s Smith, who notes the deal brokered by CBS Sports and Warner Bros. Discovery, the “two companies that manage NCAA marketing. That gives the NCAA 14 partners and three corporate champions.” (link)

+ Northern State agrees with Nexus Licensing Group for the latter to be the Wolves domestic licensing agent of record. (link)

East Central removes the interim tag from WBB HC Hurt. President Godwin: “Taking over at mid-season is never an ideal transition, but she has made the most of the opportunity. Finishing seventh in the conference and making the Great American Tournament was more than was expected in late December, due to injuries and our strength of schedule. In addition to the on-court performance, she leads an amazing group of student athletes who have high academic standing.” (link)

The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Williams June ties the three institutional closures since December – Finlandia (DIII), Cazenovia (DIII), and Holy Names – together looking at key metrics at all three institutions. The decline in enrollment over the last decade for the trio was a key indicator, especially as enrollment accounted for the plurality of revenue accounting for 60-74% a decade ago. The final data point is a low percentage of accepted students who ultimately enrolled with all three accepting over two-thirds of applicants, yet enrolling under one-fifth. (link)
