Drury AD Nyla Milleson chats with Around The Ozarks Sports Scene’s Scott Puryear about the GLVC, the transfer portal, NIL and more. With the conference having to evolve given the realignment moves of a number of former members to DI, Milleson notes the league, in her opinion, has shifted from a basketball conference to a football conference. “I'm certainly not saying this isn't in a negative way, but the shift has been to make sure that we can stay together as a conference, with football being one of our primary sports, right, wrong or indifferent. […] I think our biggest challenge to the entire conference is just the travel. I can tell you, it is very expensive just to step on the bus to go to Fayette, Iowa, before we've ever bought a hotel room or bought a meal or anything else, so the cost of travel with us being so far out here is really, really high, but I think it's our best, our best fit and our best option.” As a former coach, Milleson believes the rule changes around transfers, in particular the removal of the year-in-residence requirement, have hurt Division II. On NIL, she notes the limited number of donors for Drury and DII programs at large, compared to DI peers, and the depth of giving capability “makes me a little bit nervous to really pursue it gung ho.” More. I’ve made it a point and I’ve talked to my staff a lot about how my job is not to change things right now. My job is to understand what we do here. Even if I have a thought of how we could do it, that doesn’t mean it’s right for this institution. So being able to weigh those kinds of things. It’s a lot of listening, a lot of conversations. I’ve got a whole pad of paper of notes that I’m working through now. But it’s really just lay of the land, the processes, the power players. Who do I need to meet with? Who do I need to talk to? What are the routes to go to do things? Once we get that in place, it will be much easier to navigate the landscape.” Asked about the similarities between ERAU and her former institution, Franklin Pierce: “Division II athletics by who we are and our identity, like the pillars that we think — the student-athlete experience, the graduation rates, all of the stuff we take pride in — are very similar here. […] No matter the scale or where you’re at, every coach wants more scholarship money, more operating money, more staff. It doesn’t matter. You can go from that to this, which Embry-Riddle does a lot of things right. But they still want the same things. So being able to hear them and understand that their wants are just as valid as Pierce who doesn’t even have a full-time coach doing something. There are a lot of similarities, but it’s keeping it into perspective and understanding what’s real and getting through that.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown explains why he thinks the conference realignment waters will remain calm for the next few months, noting of non-Power 4 leagues: “With the House settlement, leagues now need to figure out exactly what those key sports are, what new standards all league members should hit (budget, scholarships, revenue sharing, etc), and where they’re prepared to make cuts or budget reallocations. But since the settlement isn’t even approved yet, and with so many nuts-and-bolts details still up in the air, few schools or leagues have made those completely concrete decisions yet. Without that information, extending membership invitations typically becomes a lower priority. […] It’s why you shouldn’t be surprised to see more D-II schools opt to wait on potential reclassification decisions until they have substantially more information. […] That’s not to say expansion is impossible. For the right school at the right time, presidents can be convinced to act without complete and full knowledge. Sometimes, desperation can push entities to move before they’re completely ready as well.” More. (link)

+ USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz summarizes challenges to the House settlement that were filed by yesterday’s deadline: “Two separate sets of attorneys made filings asking U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken to deny preliminary approval of the proposed settlement. Taken together, the arguments combined to raise myriad issues about the deal, including whether it undervalues the claims, discriminates against female athletes, creates another illegal cap on compensation and the money that would go to the plaintiffs' attorneys. [...] Lawyers involved with the case in Colorado (Fontenot case) say that while the proposed settlement values the claims they are pursuing at a little over $1.8 billion, they ‘obtained an independent, preliminary estimate from a respected economist’ that places the value of these claims at $24.3 billion. A submission from that economist was included among their filings. [...] The attorneys for the (six Women’s) rowers allege that the settlement’s ‘extreme preferential treatment of male football and basketball players suggests that Class Counsel pursued those groups’ interests to the near exclusion of interests of other’ athletes.” Tons more details. + Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the legal objections to the House settlement submitted by former Yale (DI) rowing student-athlete Grace E. Menke and five others who are, or were, members of the Yale, Oregon State (DI), George Washington (DI) and Texas (DI) crew teams. McCann explains that their “core argument is the settlement would continue to deprive college athletes, particularly women athletes, of their rightful compensation and illogically substitute one illegal cartel for another. … The objectors contend while thousands of football and men’s basketball players would receive more than $100K, nearly all women athletes, save for ‘select basketball players,’ would be paid a comparatively meager $125. This arrangement, the objectors assert, ‘reinforc[es] wrongful gender inequities instead of remedying them’ and would constitute ‘a major setback for efforts to achieve gender equity in college athletics.’” Further, the former student-athletes contend the settlement would replace one price-fixing scheme with another that imposes a compensation cap which includes no salaries and was not collectively bargained. According to data cited by the objectors, since about 380K student-athletes would get roughly $125 for their labor, that would amount to “less than seven hours of work per year at the federal minimum wage” which they ridicule as “orders of magnitude less than the number of hours student-athletes provide to their schools in athletic labor.” More from McCann. Per Hidalgo Bellows, faculty and administrators had been negotiating with students for four days prior to university leadership deciding to close the campus, which stalled conversations between the parties. Former University Senate Chair/Professor of Politics Stephanie Burkhalter: “The way the immediate response proceeded was as if these students were strangers, and they were making intentional decisions to commit crimes. From our point of view, they were not strangers. They were well-known. And they were participating in an action that is consistent with what our campus has done around social-justice issues. […] We need an independent review to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. If you ask what the mood is, it’s apprehension.
