Rio Grande will add Women’s Wrestling as its newest varsity sport. The Red Storm selects McKendree (NCAA DII) Volunteer AC Alexia Ward as its first HC. Ward: “My passion for fostering the growth of women's wrestling and guiding others towards achieving their goals runs deep. I am confident that we can cultivate an exceptional program where our main focus is to provide young athletes with opportunities for personal growth both on and off the mat. […] As wrestlers we're extremely competitive by nature so, of course, I have a vision of winning national titles and having 30 girls on the team all battling for their spot on the roster. But the number one priority for my team is to develop a team culture of camaraderie, positivity, discipline, and work ethic. Without these things, we can't even think about winning. Championships and results are about winning each day, getting better at wrestling, and enjoying the process.” (link) 

A 277-page congressional commission report released this month envisions wide-scale changes to the USOPC movement. Recommendations include a greater role for government and oversight, governance changes for the USOPC, and greater independence for athletes and the U.S. Center for SafeSport. However, USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland tells SBJ’s Rachel Axon the committee is not content to wait for Congress to put the recommendations into action: “With the amount of time and the practical realities of getting anything to happen in the government, it would be irresponsible of me to sit back and hope. We’re going to work on the things we can influence.” University of Baltimore law professor Dionne Koller, who co-chaired the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics and Paralympics: “I believe in all the recommendations. I think they’re all doable because they were a result of a bipartisan commission that came to consensus as we studied the issues and saw where the facts led us.” Anthem Engineering Chief Engineer/Commission Co-Chair Han Xiao adds: “We’re cautiously optimistic right now. We’re really encouraged that because of our really bipartisan process, that’s being reflected in bipartisan interest in Congress to be able to draft legislation. We understand it’s an election year. The window is short to be able to get anything done.” (link)

The NAACP published an open letter urging Black college athletes to “reconsider their decisions” to attend a public university in Florida after the University of Florida dismantled its DEI department pursuant to the state’s Stop WOKE Act. From the letter: “Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made no effort to conceal his administration's devaluation of Black America. … This imbalance of power and profit demands a response, particularly because these institutions reap considerable financial benefits from the very individuals they fail to stand by in matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion." NAACP President/CEO Derrick Johnson: "Florida's rampant anti-Black policies are a direct threat to the advancement of our young people and their ability to compete in a global economy. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are paramount to ensuring equitable and effective educational outcomes. The value Black, and other college athletes bring to large universities is unmatched. If these institutions are unable to completely invest in those athletes, it's time they take their talents elsewhere. The NAACP will remain unwavering in our efforts to hold Governor Ron DeSantis, and all oppressive elected officials accountable for their attempts to unravel our democracy." (link)
