Spring Arbor will add Esports as its 21st varsity sport, starting in 2024-25. SAU plans to start next year with a roster between 8 and 12 student-athletes, with plans to grow to 32 in year four. AD Jason Crist: “The opportunity to broaden our athletic offerings serves SAU in a variety of ways and will add a new and diverse group of student-athletes to our campus. […] The addition of a state-of-the-art Esports lab in the heart of campus at the Kresge Student Center will allow all of campus to attend and view competitions and create excitement for the team.” (link)

WeCOACH CEO Vanessa Fuchs sat down with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker at the 2023 Women Leaders National Convention to dive into the group’s “We Connect” program, support offerings, encouraging a pipeline of future leaders and more. The program is a product of the feedback from coaches for a desire to have peer-to-peer learning, adding that they have benefited from learning across all sports and levels. Asked about the WeCOACH’s Catch A Vision program, Fuchs says the focus is creating a pipeline for future coaches which will allow for more diverse candidate pools. “It's really with the intent to start identifying early – that's I think going to be the key. We have to identify women as they're coming out of their high school playing careers, their collegiate playing careers, maybe they're even retiring from a pro career, and they aspire to get into this critical profession of coaching that we've got to identify them early and start to intentionally groom them for that first coaching job.” Check out the full conversation only on Connect. Calumet College of St. Joseph President/Search Committee Chair Amy McCormack: “Ron has extensive leadership in collegiate athletics, and his past experience at the NCAA organizing championships and with administration duties align well with those of the MSFL commissioner. Michigan (NCAA DI) Concussion Center Director Dr. Steven Broglio talks with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker about the recent “Concussion Exposure and Suicidal Ideation, Planning, and Attempts Among US High School Students” article which appeared recently in a special mental health issue of the Journal of Athletic Training. Broglio and Banker dive into the findings of the article, including whether a greater proportion of male or female athletes reported one or more concussions last year and other key takeaways for college administrators and coaches. Broglio advises talking with suicide experts about specific behaviors to be on the lookout for, but notes that in his role as an athletic trainer he keeps an eye out for individuals who are withdrawn from the team. “That’s one of the strengths of an athletic trainer is they tend to know the athletes very well. They get to know them on a one-on-one basis, and we're trying to sort of spot those irregularities and then be in contact with our supervising physician or other healthcare providers that can help with that situation.” Check out the full Q&A on an important topic on Connect.
