Incoming NAIA member Bismark State will join the Frontier Conference. The NCAA DIII Athletic Trainer Working Group has released its final recommendations to address the core areas of culture and communication, workload, work-life balance and compensation. With compensation as the most common response for why trainers have left institutions, the working group recommends benchmarking salaries for the entire industry not just college athletics, aligning contract length with job descriptions, ensuring pay for administrative responsibilities is consistent with institutional policies and more. The second most common reason for departure is hours worked with two-thirds of ATs working over 40 hours a week. Work-life balance recommendations include managing time more effectively through established expectations, establishing appropriate hours for communication, supporting time off and alternatives to augment staff and more. On culture and communication, the group recommends having the highest-ranking AT staff member on the department’s senior leadership team, implementing a policy for changes to practice and game schedules to allow their input to be included and more. With the average AT staff responsible for 489 student-athletes and 59% of trainers responsible for more than 100 athletes, the working group suggests establishing boundaries for in-season and out-of-season activities and considering their increased workload when evaluating sport sponsorship and roster sizes among others. The NAIA will host its Men’s Golf National Championship in Silvis, Illinois at TPC Deere Run in 2025 and 2026. The NAIA’s Bowling National Championships will remain in Michigan in 2026 and 2027, but move from Sterling Heights to Lansing. (link, link)

IU Southeast will add Men’s and Women’s Golf to its portfolio starting next fall, thanks in part to the support of pro golfer Fuzzy Zoeller. AD Tod Bannister: “These programs will provide opportunities for young men and women who are looking to further their careers. Southern Indiana and Louisville are populated with an ample amount of golf talent that could have an immediate impact on the program. We expect to produce championships at the individual and team level and to provide additional opportunities for the community to engage with the university.” (link)

William Woods will add Men’s Volleyball and Beach Volleyball to its portfolio, starting next academic year. Women’s Volleyball HC Kandace Cook will oversee the two new programs. + Undergraduate enrollment rose this fall for the second year in a row, up 3% compared to similar early data from fall 2023. According to preliminary figures released by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, enrollment jumped 1.9% in bachelor’s degree programs and 4.3% in those for associate degrees. While all credential types saw gains, the number of undergraduate certificate seekers increased the most, at 7.3%; however, enrollment among first-year students shrank 5%, the first dip since the decline seen at the start of the pandemic. Declining enrollment among 18-year-olds — a proxy for students who attend college directly after high school — accounted for most of that drop, the NSRC said. Narrowing it down further, public and private nonprofit four-year institutions saw more limited undergraduate growth, at 2.2% and 1.4%, respectively, than for-profit four-year colleges and public two-year colleges. Hispanic, Black, Asian and multiracial populations all saw undergraduate enrollment increases of at least 4% year over year. White undergraduate students were the only racial or ethnic group showing a decline, dropping by 0.6%. (link); Full report. (link); Meanwhile, average net tuition and fees for first-time, full-time students at private nonprofit colleges increased about 2% YoY to $16,510 for the 2024-25 academic year when adjusted for inflation, according to a study released Monday by the nonprofit College Board. At public four-year institutions, the same costs declined by 2% to $2,480 when adjusted for inflation. As with private colleges, net tuition and fees in 2024 dollars remain well below levels seen before the 2020-21 year. (link)
